Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen
Projection Of Diffraction Patterns For Use In Cold-Neutral-Atom Trapping, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen
Glen Gillen
Scalar diffraction theory is combined with beam-propagation techniques to investigate the projection of near-field diffraction patterns to spatial locations away from the aperture for use in optically trapping cold neutral alkali-metal atoms. Calculations show that intensity distributions with localized bright and dark spots usually found within a millimeter of the diffracting aperture can be projected to a region free from optical components such as a cloud of cold atoms within a vacuum chamber. Calculations also predict that the critical properties of the optical dipole atom traps are not only maintained for the projected intensity patterns but also can be manipulated …

Characterization Of Pollen Particles Using Lidar, Leda Sox
Leda Sox
We have observed pollen in the local troposphere using the depolarization capabilities of a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system. The polarization characteristics of the received LIDAR signal, along with supplemental pollen forecast data, allowed me to characterize the shape of the pollen particles.

Silver Nanosphere Sers Probes For Sensitive Identification Of Pathogens, Kyuwan Lee
Kyuwan Lee
The identification and timely detection of pathogenic bacteria is critical to ensuring safe food, health, and water. Although surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) methods have been used for pathogen characterization and single molecule sensing, the challenge of detecting pathogens in very low numbers using an optimal substrate that is sensitive and reproducible is still a challenge. In this report, we have developed and explored a novel SERS active substrate of 60−80 nm diameter through the assembly of Ag nanocrystals (AgNCs) into Ag nanospheres (AgNSs). A finite difference time domain (FDTD) analysis of the electromagnetic field produced by these structures and …

During July – September 2008 pollution controls in China associated with the Beijing Olympics led to emissions reductions of up to 43%, as observed by NASA satellite instruments. Pollution from China has an impact on air quality throughout East Asia. In this poster, we examine the impact of China's pollution on Japan through the use of Aura satellite data (2005 – 2009), ozonesonde data (2000 – 2009), and data from air quality surface monitors (2000 – 2009). We also examine the year-to-year variability in meteorological flow regimes through trajectory model simulations of transport to Japan from the areas around Beijing …
Time Is Not A Vector: Corrections To The Article “Vectorial Relativity Versus Special Or General Relativity?”, Jorge A. Franco
Time Is Not A Vector: Corrections To The Article “Vectorial Relativity Versus Special Or General Relativity?”, Jorge A. Franco
Jorge A Franco
In this work the main conceptual errors that sequentially were introduced in the development of the Special Theory of Relativity (SR) are explained. A simple presentation of the Lorentz Transformations (LT) is given, within where it is emphasized that, by using an incomplete configuration, repeated by more than one hundred years, it leads to a first error of a chain of them, when it is assumed that the cross sectional components, in the movable inertial reference system, are invariant or not affected by its relative movement respect a fixed inertial system, on the basis of a presumed “postulate of isotropy“ …

Ultrathin, Ultrasmooth And Low-Loss Silver Films Via Wetting And Annealing, Weiqiang Chen, Kuo-Ping Chen, Mark Daniel Thoreson, Alexander Kildishev, Vladimir M. Shalaev
Weiqiang Chen
We have demonstrated that a thermal annealing treatment can reduce the optical losses in ultrathin, ultrasmooth, silver films deposited on a Ge wetting layer to values as low as the bulk material value and at the same time maintain an ultrasmooth surface. The annealing effect is sensitive to the annealing temperature and time, both of which should be carefully controlled. This annealing treatment is also effective for Ag–SiO2 multilayer composite films.

Toward Superlensing With Metal-Dielectric Composites And Multilayers, Rasmus Bundgaard Nielsen, Mark Thoreson, Weiqiang Chen, Anders Kristensen, Jørn Hvam, Vladimir M. Shalaev, Alexandra Boltasseva
Weiqiang Chen
We report on the fabrication of two types of adjustable, near-field superlens designs: metal–dielectric composites and metal–dielectric multilayer films. We fabricated a variety of films with different materials, thicknesses and compositions. These samples were characterized physically and optically to determine their film composition, quality, and optical responses. Our results on metal–dielectric composites indicate that although the real part of the effective permittivity generally follows effective medium theory predictions, the imaginary part does not and substantially higher losses are observed. Going forward, it appears that multilayer metal–dielectric designs are more suitable for sub-diffraction imaging applications because they could provide both tunability …

Fabrication And Optical Characterizations Of Smooth Silver-Silica Nanocomposite Films, Weiqiang Chen, Mark Daniel Thoreson, Alexander V. Kildishev, Vladimir Shalaev
Weiqiang Chen
We have studied the surface-smoothing effect of an ultrathin germanium (Ge) layer on silver (Ag)-silica (SiO2) nanocomposite films for superlensing applications. Our experimental results indicate that inserting a thin Ge layer below the silver-silica composite films can reduce the final surface root-mean-squared (RMS) roughness to under 1 nm. Additionally, the metal nanostructure plays a role in both the smoothing effect and the optical properties of the nanocomposite films. Our experimental results show that the Bruggeman effective medium theory (EMT) is not sufficiently accurate to describe some properties of our nanocomposite films. In addition to the constituent materials and their filling …

Graphene has attracted much attention from researchers due to its interesting mechanical, electrochemical, and electronic properties. It has many potential applications such as polymer filler, sensor, energy conversion, and energy storage devices. Graphene-based nanocomposites are under an intense spotlight amongst researchers. A large amount of graphene is required for preparation of such samples. Lately, graphene-based materials have been the target for fundamental life science investigations. Despite graphene being a much sought-after raw material, the drawbacks in the preparation of graphene are that it is a challenge amongst researchers to produce this material in a scalable quantity and that there is …

Observations Of Ozone Production In A Dissipating Tropical Convective Cell During Tc4, Gary A. Morris, A. M. Thompson, K. E. Pickering, S. Chen, E. J. Bucsela, P. A. Kucera
Gary A. Morris
From 13 July–9 August 2007, 25 ozonesondes were launched from Las Tablas, Panama as part of the Tropical Composition, Cloud, and Climate Coupling (TC4) mission. On 5 August, a strong convective cell formed in the Gulf of Panama. World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) data indicated 563 flashes (09:00–17:00 UTC) in the Gulf. NO2 data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) show enhancements, suggesting lightning production of NOx. At 15:05 UTC, an ozonesonde ascended into the southern edge of the now dissipating convective cell as it moved west across the Azuero Peninsula. The balloon oscillated from 2.5–5.1 km five times …

Diurnal Patterns Of Blowing Sand, John E. Stout
Diurnal Patterns Of Blowing Sand, John E. Stout
John E. Stout
The diurnal pattern of blowing sand results from a complex process that involves an interaction between solar heating, thermal instability, atmospheric turbulence, wind strength, and surface threshold conditions. During the day, solar heating produces thermal instability, which enhances the convective mixing of high momentum winds from the upper levels of the atmosphere to the surface layer. The sun also dries the sand surface so that the critical threshold is as low as possible. Thus, in the afternoon, the combination of strong turbulent winds and a low surface threshold increases the likelihood that winds may intermittently exceed the critical threshold of …

Commissioning And Performance Of The Cms Pixel Tracker With Cosmic Ray, Serguei Chatrchyan Muons, Stefan Spanier
stefan spanier
The pixel detector of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment consists of three barrel layers and two disks for each endcap. The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. This paper reports on the first running experience and presents results on the pixel tracker performance, which are found to be in line with the design specifications of this detector. The transverse impact parameter resolution measured in a sample of high momentum muons is 18 microns.
Observation Of Long-Range Near-Side Angular Correlations In Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Stefan Spanier
Observation Of Long-Range Near-Side Angular Correlations In Proton-Proton Collisions At The Lhc, Stefan Spanier
stefan spanier
Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV are presented, using data collected with the CMS detector over a broad range of pseudorapidity (eta) and azimuthal angle (phi). Short-range correlations in Delta(eta), which are studied in minimum bias events, are characterized using a simple "independent cluster" parametrization in order to quantify their strength (cluster size) and their extent in eta (cluster decay width). Long-range azimuthal correlations are studied differentially as a function of charged particle multiplicity and particle transverse momentum using a 980 inverse nb data set …

We describe results from a beam test of a telescope consisting of three planes of single-crystal, diamond pixel detectors. This telescope is a prototype for a small-angle luminosity monitor, the Pixel Luminosity Telescope (PLT), for CMS. We recorded the pixel addresses and pulse heights of all pixels over threshold as well as the fast-or signals from all three telescope planes. We present results on the telescope performance including occupancies, pulse heights, fast-or efficiencies and particle tracking. These results show that the PLT design meets all required specifications.
