Modeling Radiation Exposure On Flight Missions To Analyze Aircrew Risk, Camila V. Quintero Hilsaca
Modeling Radiation Exposure On Flight Missions To Analyze Aircrew Risk, Camila V. Quintero Hilsaca
Theses and Dissertations
GCR and SPE comprise the majority of the ionizing radiation experienced in the upper atmosphere within flight-altitude environments. Although previous studies have analyzed radiation doses from single sources on civilian flight operations, there is a lack of research focused on dose received by military personnel during flight from both sources simultaneously. In-flight radiation environments are modeled through the MCNP6 for two separate aircraft, an Air Force A-10 and a Boeing 737. Particle fluence values for galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events for four separate flight paths are determined using the CARI-7A software and the SIRE2 toolkit, respectively. MCNP6 code …
Pulsed Power Neutron Production With Deuterated Polymer Accelerator Targets, Anthony O. Hagey
Pulsed Power Neutron Production With Deuterated Polymer Accelerator Targets, Anthony O. Hagey
Theses and Dissertations
This document presents an investigation of the effect of deuterated polyethylene accelerator targets on the neutron fluence from a local mass injection dense plasma focus driven by the United States Naval Research Laboratory’s Hawk pulsed-power generator. After successful production of thin targets, the acquisition of thicker targets, and testing inside Hawk, it was found that the presence of a deuterated polyethylene target increased the neutron fluence. Results suggested that fluence can significantly increase with the presence of a deuterated target vs a nondeuterated target. Additive manufacturing printing was used as a production method in order to determine if deuterated accelerator …
Fitting Solar Panel Brdf Parameters To Out-Of-Plane Empirical Data, Michael R. Gross
Fitting Solar Panel Brdf Parameters To Out-Of-Plane Empirical Data, Michael R. Gross
Theses and Dissertations
The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) describes material reflectance by describing how incident irradiance reflects into all possible scatter angles as a function of incident angle. However, a solar panel has unique features that are not featured in any of these previously known models. A previous project at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) created a novel microfacet-like BRDF to model a solar panel with a prominent diffractive feature present which had not been previously modeled. This BRDF was coded into MATLAB for modeling purposes and C++ to test its speed with a MEX function call. A previous thesis …
Quantum Error Detection Without Using Ancilla Qubits, Nicolas Guerrero
Quantum Error Detection Without Using Ancilla Qubits, Nicolas Guerrero
Theses and Dissertations
Quantum computers are beset by errors from a variety of sources. Although quantum error correction and detection codes have been developed since the 1990s, these codes require mid-circuit measurements in order to operate. In order to avoid these measurements we have developed a new error detection code that only requires state collapses at the end of the circuit, which we call no ancilla error detection (NAED). We investigate some of the mathematics behind NAED such as which codes can detect which errors. We then run NAED on three separate types of circuits: Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger circuits, phase dependent circuits, and a quantum …
Optimizing Optical Switching Of Non-Linear Optimizing Optical Switching Of Non-Linear Hyperbolic Metamaterials, James A. Ethridge
Optimizing Optical Switching Of Non-Linear Optimizing Optical Switching Of Non-Linear Hyperbolic Metamaterials, James A. Ethridge
Theses and Dissertations
Modern optical materials are engineered to be used as optical devices in specific applications, such as optical computing. For optical computing, efficient forms of a particular device, the optical switch, still have not been successfully demonstrated. This problem is addressed in this research through the use of designed optical metamaterials, specifically, hyperbolic metamaterials, which offer the possibility of large non-linear properties with a low switching intensity. One-dimensional layered hyperbolic metamaterials composed of alternating layers of metal and dielectric were used here, with ITO as the metal and SiO2 as the dielectric. The non-linear behavior of the ITO/SiO2 layered …
Enabling Rapid Chemical Analysis Of Plutonium Alloys Via Machine Learning-Enhanced Atomic Spectroscopy Techniques, Ashwin P. Rao
Enabling Rapid Chemical Analysis Of Plutonium Alloys Via Machine Learning-Enhanced Atomic Spectroscopy Techniques, Ashwin P. Rao
Theses and Dissertations
Analytical atomic spectroscopy methods have the potential to provide solutions for rapid, high fidelity chemical analysis of plutonium alloys. Implementing these methods with advanced analytical techniques can help reduce the chemical analysis time needed for plutonium pit production, directly enabling the 80 pit-per-year by 2030 manufacturing goal outlined in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review. Two commercial, handheld elemental analyzers were validated for potential in situ analysis of Pu. A handheld XRF device was able to detect gallium in a Pu surrogate matrix with a detection limit of 0.002 wt% and a mean error of 8%. A handheld LIBS device was …
Efficiency Quantification For Pulsed-Source Digital Holographic Wavefront Sensing, Steven A. Owens
Efficiency Quantification For Pulsed-Source Digital Holographic Wavefront Sensing, Steven A. Owens
Theses and Dissertations
The efficiencies of a digital holography (DH) system in the pulsed configuration and the off-axis image plane recording geometry are analyzed. First, the system efficiencies of an infrared-wavelength DH system in a homodyne-pulsed configuration are measured and compared to those of a visible-wavelength DH system in a homodyne-continuous-wave (CW) configuration. The total-system, excess-reference-noise, shot-noise-limit, and mixing efficiencies of the pulsed-source system were found to be consistent with those of the CW-source system. This indicated no new efficiencies were necessary to characterize pulsed-source systems when no temporal delay exists between the pulses. The consistency of efficiencies also showed infrared DH systems …
Methods For Focal Plane Array Resolution Estimation Using Random Laser Speckle In Non-Paraxial Geometries, Phillip J. Plummer
Methods For Focal Plane Array Resolution Estimation Using Random Laser Speckle In Non-Paraxial Geometries, Phillip J. Plummer
Theses and Dissertations
The infrared (IR) imaging community has a need for direct IR detector evaluation due to the continued demand for small pixel pitch detectors, the emergence of strained-layer-super-lattice devices, and the associated lateral carrier diffusion issues. Conventional laser speckle-based modulation transfer function (MTF) estimation is dependent on Fresnel propagation and a wide-sense-stationary input random process, limiting the use of this approach for lambda (wavelength)-scale IR devices. This dissertation develops two alternative methodologies for speckle-based resolution evaluation of IR focal plane arrays (FPAs). Both techniques are formulated using Rayleigh-Sommerfield electric field propagation, making them valid in the non-paraxial geometries dictated for resolution …
Full Pattern Analysis And Comparison Of The Center Fed And Offset Fed Cassegrain Antennas With Large Focal Length To Diameter Ratios For High Power Microwave Transmission, Derek W. Mantzke
Theses and Dissertations
High power microwaves (HPM) have been a topic of research since the Cold War era. This paper will present a comparison between two Cassegrain-type antennas: the axially, or center fed, and the offset fed. Specifically, the 10 GHz operating frequency will be investigated with large focal length to diameter () ratios. Beam patterns which encompass the entire radiation pattern will be included for data validation and optimization. The simulations will follow a design of experiments factorial model to ensure all possible combinations of prescribed parameters are included, including an analysis of variance (ANOVA) study to find parameter influence on the …
Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson
Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson
Theses and Dissertations
Lithium compounds such as lithium hydride (LiH) and anhydrous lithium hydroxide (LiOH) have various applications in industry but are highly reactive when exposed to moisture and CO2. These reactions create new molecular forms, including compounds such as lithium oxide (Li2O), lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH ·H2O), and lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). These new compounds degrade the effectiveness in applications using these compounds. The negative effects induced by new lithium compounds creates a need for the ability to characterize the in-growth of such compounds. To study these in-growths, this work will present environmental …
Directionally Sensitive Gamma Imaging Using Rotating Scatter Masks And Inexpensive, Scintillation Detectors, Christopher S. Charles
Directionally Sensitive Gamma Imaging Using Rotating Scatter Masks And Inexpensive, Scintillation Detectors, Christopher S. Charles
Theses and Dissertations
This work demonstrates the first instantiation of the FitzGerald Rotating Scatter Mask (RSM) as a proof-of-concept for two-dimensional source direction determination using a single, inexpensive, non-cooled scintillator, as well as an alternate mask design for comparison. A large RSM was additively manufactured from low-Z, acrylic like material, and rotated around the ubiquitous standard 3" x 3" NaI(Tl) or NaI(Tl)/CsI(Tl) phoswich detector, set internally to the mask. Smaller versions of the FitzGerald and alternate RSM designs were 3D printed for testing and used in conjunction with a LaBr detector to characterize the RSM system with a size and weight reduction applied. …
Determination Of Vortex Locations In A 2x2 Array Of Josephson Junctions For Topological Quantum Computation, Casey L. Kowalski
Determination Of Vortex Locations In A 2x2 Array Of Josephson Junctions For Topological Quantum Computation, Casey L. Kowalski
Theses and Dissertations
A large barrier to practical quantum computation exists in the form of qubit decoherence, which leads to high noise and error when implementing quantum algorithms. A potential solution to this problem is the use of topologically-protected Majorana-based qubits, as their nonlocal nature and unique non-abelian exchange statistics render them virtually immune to decoherence while still allowing the state to be easily manipulated. For such a qubit to be constructed, it is essential to know the locations of the Majorana-hosting vortices in the system. This work presents a solution for the formation locations of vortices in a 2x2 superconducting island array, …
Formulation And Characterization Of Fast-Curing Plastic Scintillators With High-Z Loading, Theodore W. Stephens
Formulation And Characterization Of Fast-Curing Plastic Scintillators With High-Z Loading, Theodore W. Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
Development of novel fast-curing plastic scintillators is highly advantageous due to their potential to be manufactured via 3D printing. Several formulations were developed that exhibit enhanced photon sensitivity, producing modest but discernible photopeaks at an incident gamma energy of 122 keV. The photon sensitivity is achieved via bismuth high-Z loading; however, this practice typically results in diminished light yields. Subsequent formulations, which varied the photoinitiator concentration and curing time, demonstrated successful curing with sufficient plastic hardness, reduced purple discoloration, reduced heat buildup during curing, and resulted in less cracking during the curing process, all of which were correlated with lower …
Development Of A Magnetic Confinement Attachment For Enhanced Signal In Handheld Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Soil Analysis, Alfred C. Anderson
Development Of A Magnetic Confinement Attachment For Enhanced Signal In Handheld Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Soil Analysis, Alfred C. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Field techniques for characterizing low levels of heavy elements of less than 100 parts per million in soils tend to be unreliable because of the relatively weak signal of these elements and the large, variable background inherent to analyzing soils with minimal sample preparation. To enhance the detection and analysis capability of a handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument, this work investigates the effects of a unique magnetic confinement apparatus on signal intensities, focusing on five iron lines as well as those from actinides in 11 soil samples. The proposed magnetic confinement apparatus achieved over 0.8 T but did not …
Characterization Of Infrared Metasurface Optics With An Optical Scatterometer, Matthew R. Miller
Characterization Of Infrared Metasurface Optics With An Optical Scatterometer, Matthew R. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
An optical scatterometer is used to characterize the infrared scatter of a dielectric metasurface cylindrical lens and two variants of that design. The design uses dielectric nanopillars to create the parabolic phase delay required for lensing; the variants change the length of the nanopillars from the design length of 4 microns to 0.9 and 5.2 microns. Scatter measurements were made at the design wavelength of 4 microns, and at 3.39 and 5 microns. These measurements showed wide-angle scatter greater than that measured for a conventional refractive optic, and that these metasurfaces perform their optical function best at the design wavelength …
Analysis Of Space To Ground Ladar Performance With Non-Traditional Optics, Prayant P.S. Hanjra
Analysis Of Space To Ground Ladar Performance With Non-Traditional Optics, Prayant P.S. Hanjra
Theses and Dissertations
Two major obstacles to space-based LADAR systems are low power returns from targets and limitations on size and weight for transporting large optics into orbit. Signals incur significant losses during roundtrip propagation through the atmosphere and from diffuse scattering off of targets. Models, such as the Laser Environmental Effects Definition and Reference (LEEDR) simulator and High Energy Laser End to End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS) can predict these losses due to the atmosphere and optical components for a variety of atmospheric and environmental conditions across the globe. A transmissometer is used to validate these models. These losses are used to determine …
Neutron Energy Tuning Assemblies For Nuclear Weapon Environment Applications At The National Ignition Facility, Nicholas J. Quartemont
Neutron Energy Tuning Assemblies For Nuclear Weapon Environment Applications At The National Ignition Facility, Nicholas J. Quartemont
Theses and Dissertations
An energy tuning assembly was developed to spectrally shape the National Ignition Facility deuterium-tritium fusion neutron source to a notional thermonuclear and prompt fission neutron spectrum to fulfill neutron source capability gaps. The experimental neutron environment was characterized with activation dosimetry, neutronics and covariance models, and unfolded to determine the as-fielded neutron spectrum. The first energy tuning assembly was demonstrated to create synthetic spectrally accurate post-detonation fission products, enhancing U.S. technical nuclear forensics capabilities. ATHENA, a second-generation energy tuning assembly, was also optimized to meet similar objectives, but the new platform neutron fluence efficiency was increased by a factor of …
Improved Out-Of-Plane Brdf Measurement And Modeling, Todd V. Small
Improved Out-Of-Plane Brdf Measurement And Modeling, Todd V. Small
Theses and Dissertations
The bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) describes the directional (spatial) nature of light’s reflectance from a material surface. When incident light of a particular wavelength strikes a material surface from a particular direction, portions of that incident light will be reflected into various directions in various amounts, depending on the material’s surface characteristics. Historically, the vast majority of BRDF measurement and modeling research has focused on reflection within the plane-of incidence (in-plane) and dealt primarily with simplified isotropic BRDFs. Remote sensing applications, such as satellite light curve analysis, typically rely on closed-form microfacet models for efficiency. There are many factors, …
Improvements To Emissive Plume And Shock Wave Diagnostics And Interpretation During Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Graphite, Timothy I. Calver
Improvements To Emissive Plume And Shock Wave Diagnostics And Interpretation During Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Graphite, Timothy I. Calver
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation covers nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of graphite for 4-5.7 J/cm2 fluences with 248 nm and 532 nm lasers in 1-180 Torr helium, argon, nitrogen, air, and mixed gas. Three experiments were performed to improve the interpretation of common diagnostics used to characterize pulsed laser ablation, find simple but universal scaling relationships for comparing dynamics across different materials and ablation conditions, and provide a systematic analysis of graphite emissive plume and shock wave dynamics. A scaling of the Sedov-Taylor energy ratio was developed and validated for a range of studies despite differences in wavelength, pulse duration, fluence, and …
Correlated Positron-Electron Orbital (Cpeo): A Novel Method That Models Positron-Electron Correlation In Virtual Ps At The Mean-Field Level, Kevin E. Blaine
Correlated Positron-Electron Orbital (Cpeo): A Novel Method That Models Positron-Electron Correlation In Virtual Ps At The Mean-Field Level, Kevin E. Blaine
Theses and Dissertations
The Correlated Positronic-Electronic Orbital (CPEO) method was developed and implemented to capture correlation effects at between the positron and electron in the modeling of systems that involve a bound positron. Methods that effectively model these systems require many hundred basis functions and use a mean field approach as the beginning step. CPEO builds an orbital for virtual Positronium (Ps) that contains a positron in a bound state along with an accompanying electron to the larger system. Assigning the virtual Ps orbital allows for the two particle variational optimization in conjunction with the other particles that compose the whole system. This …
One Dimensional Study Of Magnetoplasmadynamic Thrusters For A Potential New Class Of Heavy Ion Drivers For Plasma Jet Driven Magnetoinertial Fusion, Patrick M. Brown
One Dimensional Study Of Magnetoplasmadynamic Thrusters For A Potential New Class Of Heavy Ion Drivers For Plasma Jet Driven Magnetoinertial Fusion, Patrick M. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Plasma Jet Driven Magnetoinertial Fusion (PJMIF) requires high velocity heavy ion drivers in order to compress a magnetized target to fusion conditions. Previous work with heavy ion drivers has revealed sub-par accelerations due to plasma instabilities; thus, it is necessary to investigate new methods of heavy ion plasma acceleration. One such method is Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters. Past studies of these thrusters have been conducted at an initial temperature at or below the energy of full ionization. Here MPD thrusters are investigated using a Godunov type MHD solver with a Harten-Lax van Leer-D (HLLD) flux solving scheme assuming the plasma is …
Neutron Pulse-Time Extension Through Conversion To Positronium, Shawn T. Mctaggart
Neutron Pulse-Time Extension Through Conversion To Positronium, Shawn T. Mctaggart
Theses and Dissertations
Laser-Plasma interactions have strong potential as future neutron sources. Measuring the neutron rate is difficult due to several issues: the very short duration of the laser pulse and subsequent fusion events (on the order of a few picoseconds), the corresponding short duration of the neutron pulse, and the simultaneous emission of other ionizing particles such as protons and electrons. A system was designed to measure neutron emission by imposing a delay from the emission of other radiation by conversion of the neutrons into ortho-positronium (o-Ps), the triplet state of positronium. This lifetime extension enables more sensitive and selective detection of …

Optical Study Of 2-D Detonation Wave Stability, Eulaine T. Grodner
Theses and Dissertations
Fundamental optical detonation study of detonations constricted to a 2-d plane propagation, and detonations propagating around a curve. All images were processed using modern image processing techniques. The optical techniques used were shadowgraph, Schlieren, and chemiluminescence. In the 2-Dstraight channels, it was determined wave stability was a factor of cell size. It was also determined the detonation wave thickness (area between the combustion and shockwave) was a factor of how much heat available for the detonation. For the detonations propagating around a curve, it was determined the three main classifications of wave stability were stable, unstable, and detonation wave restart. …
Error Detection In Quantum Algorithms, Simeon R. Hanks
Error Detection In Quantum Algorithms, Simeon R. Hanks
Theses and Dissertations
Quantum computers need to be able to control highly entangled quantum states in the presence of environmental perturbations that lead to errors in calculations. Progress in superconducting qubits has enabled the development of computers capable of running small quantum circuits. The current era of Noise Intermediate Scale Quantum computing has a high error rate. To alleviate this error rate we apply an encoding scheme that allows us to remove results with known errors improving the quality of our results. The encoding uses multiple qubits as a single logical qubit and balances the natural tendency of state-of-the-art quantum computers to decohere …
Computational Electromagnetic Modeling Of Metasurface Optical Devices With Defect Study, Carlos D. Diaz
Computational Electromagnetic Modeling Of Metasurface Optical Devices With Defect Study, Carlos D. Diaz
Theses and Dissertations
One of the first fabricated metasurface optical devices, the in-plane V-antenna lenses, were plagued by a fundamental transmission limit (<25 >). Two distinct sets of Out-of-Plane phase elements were designed with improved transmission (~60 ). These were fabricated as beamsteerers and characterized in terms of their Bidirectional Transmittance Distribution Function measured as a function of scatter angle. Experimental data from the beamsteerers was analyzed via simulations using a finite element method (FEM). The measurements showed the designed beamsteering, but also a strong zero-order diffraction not present in the simulations, which motivated this study to understand what was causing these differences. …25>
Ab Initio Spectroscopy Of Natural And Artificial Fire Contaminants For V/W Band Frequency Signal Absorbance, Matthew B. Husk
Ab Initio Spectroscopy Of Natural And Artificial Fire Contaminants For V/W Band Frequency Signal Absorbance, Matthew B. Husk
Theses and Dissertations
The rotation and vibration spectral properties including frequencies and intensities for highly concentrated molecules present in wildland and artificial fires have been studied. These properties were used to determine absorption and its effect in a link budget analysis. Absorption in link budget analyses is commonly accounted for via line-by-line methodology aided by HITRAN documented intensities. Limited, if any, customization of spectral properties is available with HITRAN and other spectral databases. Ab initio calculations with different atomic basis sets were employed to obtain structures, dipole moments, rotational-vibrational frequencies and intensities, as well as various coupling parameters. Anharmonic corrections to the vibrational …
Examination Of A Lenseless Setup For Reflective Inverse Diffusion Of Light, John Nguyen
Examination Of A Lenseless Setup For Reflective Inverse Diffusion Of Light, John Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
Reflective inverse diffusion uses spatial light modulators to shape an incident wavefront so that when the wavefront interacts with some diffuse scattering sample, the reflected light will constructively interfere at a single focus. This thesisexamines the efficacy of using a lensless setup against a focal plane setup in achieving reflective inverse diffusion while simultaneously beamsteering. The lensless setup outperformed its counterpart by being able to focus more energy in a region, but failed to achieve the same beamsteering capabilities as the focal plane system. Understanding the flaws behind the lensless setup will be instrumental in creating a setup that can …
Topological Realizations Of Entangling Quantum Gates, Adrian D. Scheppe
Topological Realizations Of Entangling Quantum Gates, Adrian D. Scheppe
Theses and Dissertations
Topological systems are immune to decoherence and provide a hunting ground for qubits that are fault tolerant. The process of calculating linear operator representations of Majorana fermion exchanges or braids is well known and well documented; however, there is no documented intuition or algorithm which provides the opposite; braids from quantum gates. In this document, all possible linear representations of single, double, triple, and quadruple qubit gates are calculated to find several key patterns which provide crucial insight into the manifestation of qubit gates. A n x n gate will require n + 2 Majoranas with ½n + 1 trivial …
Neuromorphic Vision Sensors For Space-Based Applications, Jessica L. Horn
Neuromorphic Vision Sensors For Space-Based Applications, Jessica L. Horn
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the viability of event-based vision (neuromorphic) sensors for future use on satellites. Outputting single pixel events only when a change in intensity is detected, event-based vision sensors offer a potential low power, low latency, high temporal resolution, and high dynamic range solution as compared to traditional CCD or CMOS camera technology. The commercial off-the-shelf DVS240C sensor, is analyzed to determine if operability is affected by launch conditions and the low Earth space environment through vacuum, thermal vacuum, and vibration tests. No appreciable changes in sensor operation was observed throughout testing. Additionally, the sensor was able to detect …
