Longitudinal Partitioning Waveform Relaxation Methods For The Analysis Of Transmission Line Circuits, Tarik Menkad
Longitudinal Partitioning Waveform Relaxation Methods For The Analysis Of Transmission Line Circuits, Tarik Menkad
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Three research projects are presented in this manuscript. Projects one and two describe two waveform relaxation algorithms (WR) with longitudinal partitioning for the time-domain analysis of transmission line circuits. Project three presents theoretical results about the convergence of WR for chains of general circuits.
The first WR algorithm uses a assignment-partition procedure that relies on inserting external series combinations of positive and negative resistances into the circuit to control the speed of convergence of the algorithm. The convergence of the subsequent WR method is examined, and fast convergence is cast as a generic optimization problem in the frequency-domain. An automatic …

Conditional Generative Adversarial Network Demosaicing Strategy For Division Of Focal Plane Polarimeters, Garrett Sargent, Bradley M. Ratliff, Vijayan K. Asari
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Division of focal plane (DoFP), or integrated microgrid polarimeters, typically consist of a 2 × 2 mosaic of linear polarization filters overlaid upon a focal plane array sensor and obtain temporally synchronized polarized intensity measurements across a scene, similar in concept to a Bayer color filter array camera. However, the resulting estimated polarimetric images suffer a loss in resolution and can be plagued by aliasing due to the spatially-modulated microgrid measurement strategy. Demosaicing strategies have been proposed that attempt to minimize these effects, but result in some level of residual artifacts. In this work we propose a conditional generative adversarial …

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic has severely impacted lives across the globe. Respiratory disorders in COVID-19 patients are caused by lung opacities similar to viral pneumonia. A Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system for the detection of COVID-19 using chest radiographs would provide a second opinion for radiologists. For this research, we utilize publicly available datasets that have been marked by radiologists into two-classes (COVID-19 and non-COVID-19). We address the class imbalance problem associated with the training dataset by proposing a novel transfer-to-transfer learning approach, where we break a highly imbalanced training dataset into a group of balanced mini-sets and …

Machine learning (ML) techniques can be applied to predict and monitor drought conditions due to climate change. Predicting future vegetation health indicators (such as EVI, NDVI, and LAI) is one approach to forecast drought events for hotspots (e.g. Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions). Recently, ML models were implemented to predict EVI values using parameters such as land types, time series, historical vegetation indices, land surface temperature, soil moisture, evapotranspiration etc. In this work, we collected the MODIS atmospherically corrected surface spectral reflectance imagery with multiple vegetation related indices for modeling and evaluation of drought conditions in the MENA …
High Wind Alerts: A System Created With Observations From The X-Band Teaching And Research Radar, Lauren Warner
High Wind Alerts: A System Created With Observations From The X-Band Teaching And Research Radar, Lauren Warner
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Following the August 13, 2011, Indiana State Fair stage collapse tragedy, caused by a wind gust from an approaching thunderstorm, Purdue University enforced a wind speed restriction of 30 mph (13 m s-1) for tents at outdoor events. During these events, volunteers stand outside with handheld anemometers, measuring and reporting when the wind speeds exceed this limit. In this study, we report testing of a new system to automate high-wind alerts based on observations from a Doppler radar, the X-band Teaching and Research Radar (XTRRA), near Purdue’s campus. XTRRA scans over campus at low elevations approximately every 5 minutes. Using …

The shortest path problem has been one of the most fundamental practical problems in network analysis. One of the good algorithms is Bellman-Ford, which has been applied in network, for the last some years. Due to complexity in the decision-making process, the decision makers face complications to express their view and judgment with an exact number for single valued membership degrees under neutrosophic environment. Though the interval number is a special situation of the neutrosophic, it did not solve the shortest path problems in an absolute manner. Hence, in this work, the authors have introduced the score function and accuracy …
A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr
A Novel Path Loss Forecast Model To Support Digital Twins For High Frequency Communications Networks, James Marvin Taylor Jr
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The need for long-distance High Frequency (HF) communications in the 3-30 MHz frequency range seemed to diminish at the end of the 20th century with the advent of space-based communications and the spread of fiber optic-connected digital networks. Renewed interest in HF has emerged as an enabler for operations in austere locations and for its ability to serve as a redundant link when space-based and terrestrial communication channels fail. Communications system designers can create a “digital twin” system to explore the operational advantages and constraints of the new capability. Existing wireless channel models can adequately simulate communication channel conditions with …
Optimized Machine Learning Models Towards Intelligent Systems, Mohammadnoor Ahmad Mohammad Injadat
Optimized Machine Learning Models Towards Intelligent Systems, Mohammadnoor Ahmad Mohammad Injadat
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The rapid growth of the Internet and related technologies has led to the collection of large amounts of data by individuals, organizations, and society in general [1]. However, this often leads to information overload which occurs when the amount of input (e.g. data) a human is trying to process exceeds their cognitive capacities [2]. Machine learning (ML) has been proposed as one potential methodology capable of extracting useful information from large sets of data [1]. This thesis focuses on two applications. The first is education, namely e-Learning environments. Within this field, this thesis proposes different optimized ML ensemble models to …

A Machine Learning Approach To Delineating Neighborhoods From Geocoded Appraisal Data, Rao Hamza Ali, Josh Graves, Stanley Wu, Jenny Lee, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Identification of neighborhoods is an important, financially-driven topic in real estate. It is known that the real estate industry uses ZIP (postal) codes and Census tracts as a source of land demarcation to categorize properties with respect to their price. These demarcated boundaries are static and are inflexible to the shift in the real estate market and fail to represent its dynamics, such as in the case of an up-and-coming residential project. Delineated neighborhoods are also used in socioeconomic and demographic analyses where statistics are computed at a neighborhood level. Current practices of delineating neighborhoods have mostly ignored the information …
Electrical Measurement Of Sram Cell Variation And Sensitivity To Singe-Event Upsets By Low-Energy Protons, James M. Cannon
Electrical Measurement Of Sram Cell Variation And Sensitivity To Singe-Event Upsets By Low-Energy Protons, James M. Cannon
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
With the rise of the transistor in the 1970s, electronics shifted from analog circuitry, where values are stored on a continuum, to digital, in which ones and zeros are the law of the land. Transistors, as a class circuit element, can be affected by radiation and cosmic rays which then cause temporary or permanent failures, depending on the specifics of the situation. On Earth, this poses little risk with all electronics shielded by the magnetosphere, however for space bound electronics, the risks from these extraterrestrial particles are not so negligible. The first step in designing a mission to be able …

With the advancement of technology, there is a growing need of classifying malware programs that could potentially harm any computer system and/or smaller devices. In this research, an ensemble classification system comprising convolutional and recurrent neural networks is proposed to distinguish malware programs. Microsoft's Malware Classification Challenge (BIG 2015) dataset with nine distinct classes is utilized for this study. This dataset contains an assembly file and a compiled file for each malware program. Compiled files are visualized as images and are classified using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Assembly files consist of machine language opcodes that are distinguished among classes using …

Comparison Of Visual Simultaneous Localization And Mapping Methods For Fixed-Wing Aircraft Using Slambench2, Patrick R. Latcham
Theses and Dissertations
Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) algorithms have evolved rapidly in the last few years, however there has been little research evaluating current algorithm's effectiveness and limitations when applied to tracking the position of a fixed-wing aerial vehicle. This research looks to evaluate current monocular VSLAM algorithms' performance on aerial vehicle datasets using the SLAMBench2 benchmarking suite. The algorithms tested are MonoSLAM, PTAM, OKVIS, LSDSLAM, ORB-SLAM2, and SVO, all of which are built into the SLAMBench2 software. The algorithms' performance is evaluated using simulated datasets generated in the AftrBurner Engine. The datasets were designed to test the quality of each …

Weight-sharing is one of the pillars behind Convolutional Neural Networks and their successes. However, in physical neural systems such as the brain, weight-sharing is implausible. This discrepancy raises the fundamental question of whether weight-sharing is necessary. If so, to which degree of precision? If not, what are the alternatives? The goal of this study is to investigate these questions, primarily through simulations where the weight-sharing assumption is relaxed. Taking inspiration from neural circuitry, we explore the use of Free Convolutional Networks and neurons with variable connection patterns. Using Free Convolutional Networks, we show that while weight-sharing is a pragmatic optimization …

Deep Siamese Neural Networks For Facial Expression Recognition In The Wild, Wassan Hayale
Deep Siamese Neural Networks For Facial Expression Recognition In The Wild, Wassan Hayale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The variation of facial images in the wild conditions due to head pose, face illumination, and occlusion can significantly affect the Facial Expression Recognition (FER) performance. Moreover, between subject variation introduced by age, gender, ethnic backgrounds, and identity can also influence the FER performance. This Ph.D. dissertation presents a novel algorithm for end-to-end facial expression recognition, valence and arousal estimation, and visual object matching based on deep Siamese Neural Networks to handle the extreme variation that exists in a facial dataset. In our main Siamese Neural Networks for facial expression recognition, the first network represents the classification framework, where we …

In the above article [1], Figure 2 was incorrect. Unfortunately, we mixed the color label of "CONV $\to $ BN $\to $ ReLu" and "Unpooling" in the CNN structure section of Figure 2. The color label of "CONV $\to $ BN $\to $ ReLu" should be orange while the color label of "Unpooling" should be green. Also, the word "Decoder" is misspelled. That same figure with the same error is also used for the graphic abstract. The corrected figure is given here. None of the sections in the figure is modified. The only change is in the color label of …

Mitotic cell detection is one of the challenging problems in the field of computational pathology. Currently, mitotic cell detection and counting are one of the strongest prognostic markers for breast cancer diagnosis. The clinical visual inspection on histology slides is tedious, error prone, and time consuming for the pathologist. Thus, automatic mitotic cell detection approaches are highly demanded in clinical practice. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-task learning system for mitosis detection from pathological images which is named"MitosisNet". MitosisNet consist of segmentation, detection, and classification models where the segmentation, and detection models are used for mitosis reference region …

Rising global temperatures over the past decades is directly affecting glacier dynamics. To understand glacier fluctuations and document regional glacier-state trends, glacier-boundary detection is necessary. Debris-covered glacier (DCG) mapping, however, is notoriously difficult using conventional geospatial technology methods. Therefore, in this research for automated DCG mapping, we evaluate the utility of a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is a deep learning feed-forward neural network. The CNN inputs include Landsat satellite images, an Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) digital elevation model (DEM) and DEM-derived land-surface parameters. Our CNN based deep-learning approach named GlacierNet was designed by appropriately choosing the type, number …

Ev Charging Behavior Analysis Using Hybrid Intelligence For 5g Smart Grid, Yi Shen, Wei Fang, Feng Ye, Michel Kadoch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the widespread use of electric vehicles (EV), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) has sparked considerable discussion as an energy-management technology. Due to the inherently high maneuverability of EVs, V2G systems must provide on-demand service for EVs. Therefore, in this work, we propose a hybrid computing architecture based on fog and cloud with applications in 5G-based V2G networks. This architecture allows the bi-directional flow of power and information between schedulable EVs and smart grids (SGs) to improve the quality of service and cost-effectiveness of energy service providers. However, it is very important to select …

Lung segmentation is a significant step in developing computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) using Chest Radiographs (CRs). CRs are used for diagnosis of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), lung cancer, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. Hence, developing a Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system would provide a second opinion to help radiologists in the reading process, increase objectivity, and reduce the workload. In this paper, we present the implementation of our ensemble deep learning model for lung segmentation. This model is based on the original DeepLabV3+, which is the extended model of DeepLabV3. Our model utilizes various architectures as a backbone of DeepLabV3+, such as …
