Synthesis And Characterization Of Photochromic Copolymers Containing 3-Indolylfulgides/Indolylfulgimides, Changjun Fan
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fulgides and fulgimides are important organic photochromic compounds and can switch between the open forms and the closed forms with light. The 3-indolylfulgides and 3-indolylfulgimides exhibit promising photochromic properties and have great potential in optical memory devices, optical switches and biosensors. Copolymers containing 3-indolylfulgides/indolylfulgimides synthesized via free radical polymerizations increase conformation changes and allow the photochromic compounds to be uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix.
A trifluoromethyl 3-indolylfulgide and two trifluoromethyl 3-indolylfulgimides with one or two polymerizable N-stryryl group(s) were prepared. Copolymerization with methyl methacrylate provided two linear copolymers or a cross-linked copolymer. The properties of the monomeric fulgide/fulgimides …
Strain Promoted Click Chemistry Of 8-Azidopurine And 5-Azidopyrimidine Nucleosides And Nucleotides With Cyclooctynes And Applications To Living Cell Imaging, Jessica Zayas
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The strain promoted azide alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC) of azido nucleobase modified nucleosides and nucleotides with cyclooctynes to give fluorescent triazoles has been relatively unexplored. Thus, SPAAC between azido-nucleobases and various cyclooctynes in aqueous solution at ambient temperature resulted in the efficient formation (3 min - 2 h) of triazole products with inherent fluorescent properties. The 2- and 8-azidoadenine nucleosides reacted with fused cyclopropyl cyclooctyne, dibenzylcyclooctyne or monofluorocyclooctyne to produce click products functionalized with hydroxyl, amino, N-hydroxysuccinimide, or biotin moieties. The previously unexplored 5-azidouridine and labile 5-azido-2'-deoxyuridine were similarly converted to the analogous triazole products in quantitative yields in less …
Advanced Oxidation Processes Of Problematic Toxin And Water Contaminants: Cylindrospermopsin, Iopamidol, 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol And Propylene Glycol Phenyl Ether, Cen Zhao
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The occurrences of cyanotoxin and organic contaminants threaten drinking water sources and are a serious human health and environmental concern. The control of these problematic contaminants and the remediation of the associated contaminants are critical for ensuring safe drinking water to significant populations. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received considerable attention as a potential water treatment for various pollutants. In this dissertation, advanced oxidative degradation of four problematic water toxic contaminants (CYN, iopamidol, 4-methylcyclohexane methanol and propylene glycol phenyl ether) were studied to develop the fundamental understanding required to assess AOPs as a potential water treatment process.

Synthetic Approaches To Flexible Fluorescent Conjugated Polymers, Tereza Vokata
Synthetic Approaches To Flexible Fluorescent Conjugated Polymers, Tereza Vokata
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Conjugated polymers (CPs) are intrinsically fluorescent materials that have been used for various biological applications including imaging, sensing, and delivery of biologically active substances. The synthetic control over flexibility and biodegradability of these materials aids the understanding of the structure-function relationships among the photophysical properties, the self-assembly behaviors of the corresponding conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs), and the cellular behaviors of CPNs, such as toxicity, cellular uptake mechanisms, and sub-cellular localization patterns.
Synthetic approaches towards two classes of flexible CPs with well-preserved fluorescent properties are described. The synthesis of flexible poly(p-phenylenebutadiynylene)s (PPBs) uses competing Sonogashira and Glaser coupling reactions …
Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles For Biological Labeling And Delivery, Eladio A. Mendez
Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles For Biological Labeling And Delivery, Eladio A. Mendez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cancer remains one of the world’s most devastating diseases, with more than 10 million new cases every year. However, traditional treatments have proven insufficient for successful medical management of cancer due to the chemotherapeutics’ difficulty in achieving therapeutic concentrations at the target site, non-specific cytotoxicity to normal tissues, and limited systemic circulation lifetime. Although, a concerted effort has been placed in developing and successfully employing nanoparticle(NP)-based drug delivery vehicles successfully mitigate the physiochemical and pharmacological limitations of chemotherapeutics, work towards controlling the subcellular fate of the carrier, and ultimately its payload, has been limited. Because efficient therapeutic action requires drug …
