Applications Of A Lightning Proxy To Generate Synthetic Lightning For Use In Physics-Based Image-Chain Models, Bryan G. Castro Mar 2022

Applications Of A Lightning Proxy To Generate Synthetic Lightning For Use In Physics-Based Image-Chain Models, Bryan G. Castro

Theses and Dissertations

A method of generating synthetic lightning through the use of a convective available potential energy (CAPE) times precipitation rate (P) proxy is applied over three distinct climatological zones of the world for a single warm season: central and southern AZ of the United States, central Cuba, and North Korea. Global Forecast System (GFS) 0.25° by 0.25° forecast data for June, July, and August of 2019 is used to provide 6-hourly CAPE and precipitation rate, while Global Lightning Dataset (GLD360) data for the period 2016 to 2020 is used to provide observed lightning strokes. A five-year lightning climatology study is conducted …

Comparison Of Spatial Precipitation Forecasts With A Satellite Dataset, Andrew C. Siebels Mar 2021

Comparison Of Spatial Precipitation Forecasts With A Satellite Dataset, Andrew C. Siebels

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to analyze and compare global precipitation data from the Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) with the Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)-Climate Data Record (CDR) to improve long term precipitation forecasting. The CFSv2 has a 0.5-degree resolution which will provide model data for precipitation forecasts. The PERSIANN-CDR is a satellite derived daily 0.25-degree dataset with 37 years of global precipitation coverage 60 N to 60 S. The 0-to-10, 15-to-25, 55-to-65, and 80-to-90 day forecast time frames will then be analyzed for accuracy, and a quantile mapping (QM) technique …

On Establishing A Climatology Of Gust Factors And Assessing Their Ability To Forecast Wind Gusts In Milwaukee, Wi, Austin Reed Harris May 2016

On Establishing A Climatology Of Gust Factors And Assessing Their Ability To Forecast Wind Gusts In Milwaukee, Wi, Austin Reed Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Wind gust forecasts are difficult given the small spatial and temporal scales at which they occur. As a result, a variety of statistical and numerical modeling approaches are used to forecast wind gusts, but a best practice has yet to be determined. One statistical approach, called a gust factor, is advantageous in its simplicity, and is often used operationally. Derived empirically from hourly and one-minute wind observations, we establish a climatology of gust factors for the 2000 to 2014 period at Milwaukee, WI. The gust factors are then stratified by wind speed, direction, time of day and year, and stability …
