The Biscayne Aquifer Of Southeastern Florida, Kevin Cunningham, Lee J. Florea Jun 2009

The Biscayne Aquifer Of Southeastern Florida, Kevin Cunningham, Lee J. Florea

Lee J Florea, PhD, P.G.

In southeastern Florida, locally delineated, small, poorly explored caves and subtle karst are characteristic of the limestone that composes the unconfined Biscayne aquifer – one of the most permeable aquifers in the world. The main units of the Biscayne aquifer are the Fort Thompson Formation and Miami Limestone, both characterized by eogenetic karst.

Intra-Annual Comparison Of Mesospheric Gravity Waves Over Halley And Rothera Stations, Antarctica., Jonathan R. Pugmire, Mike J. Taylor, Kim Nielsen May 2009

Intra-Annual Comparison Of Mesospheric Gravity Waves Over Halley And Rothera Stations, Antarctica., Jonathan R. Pugmire, Mike J. Taylor, Kim Nielsen

Jonathan Pugmire

As part of a collaborative program between British Antarctic Survey and Utah State University, we present an intra-annual study of short-period, mesospheric gravity wave events observed over Antarctica in the near infrared OH emission. The measurements were made using an all-sky airglow imager operated at either Halley Station on the Brunt Ice Shelf, or Rothera Station, situated on the Antarctic Peninsula. A total of six austral winter seasons have been analyzed (2000-2006). This study comprises the first detailed winter seasonal investigation of short-period mesospheric gravity waves at high-Antarctic latitudes. Distributions of their observed wave parameters were found to be similar …

A Versatile Shotgun Source For Engineering And Groundwater Seismic Surveys, John R. Pelton Jan 2009

A Versatile Shotgun Source For Engineering And Groundwater Seismic Surveys, John R. Pelton

John (Jack) Pelton

We describe an electrical seismic gun that is capable of firing 8-gauge blank black powder shells in a water-filled borehole under relatively high hydrostatic pressures. The new seismic gun is a modified version of the electrical shotgun source for engineering seismic surveys introduced by Pullan and MacAulay (1987). Our modifications seal the firing circuit and 8-gauge shell against water entry so underwater detonation will occur reliably at depths to at least 80 m (0.9 MPa atmospheric pressure). Source energy is controlled by varying the size of the black powder load in the shell from 50 grains to 500 grains (10 …

An Agenda For Sustainable Communities, John Dernbach

John C. Dernbach

This article summarizes progress toward sustainable communities in the United States since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (or Earth Summit) in 1992. It shows the significant initiative that many communities have undertaken and identifies existing state and federal laws as impediments to achieving sustainability. This article also makes recommendations for further progress based on what we have already learned about how to achieve sustainable communities. They include not only more and strengthened sustainable community efforts, and broad state and federal legal support, but also deep engagement of all affected citizens. This article is based primarily on three …

Multilayered Structures In The Ionosphere F2 Region And Impulse-Like Increase Of The Nightglow Red 630 Nm Line Intensity As A Result Of Influence Of Shear Excited Atmospheric Vortical Perturbations, G. G. Didebulidze, Levan Lomidze, N. B. Gudadze, M. Todua Dec 2008

B. Gudadze, M. Todua

Levan Lomidze

It is shown that the formation of multilayered structures in the midlatitude ionosphere F 2 layer can be caused by atmospheric vortical perturbation (shear wave) evolving in the meridional wind with linear zonal shear and can be accompanied by an impulse-like increase (with duration about 1–3 h) in the red 630 nm line total nightglow intensity. The shear wave can produce an enhancement of the northward wind (or decrease in the southward one), which can cause a downward motion of the F 2 layer peak height resulting in the impulse-like increase in the red line intensity. An important increase in …
