Increasing data volumes and adoption of computer-assisted hydrographic data processing algorithms necessitate higher data processing rates if gains in efficiency achieved in the last decade are to be maintained and enhanced. Recent advances in desktop computer architectures have made multi-core and multi-processor systems readily available, and some advances have been made in implementing multi-threaded versions of common hydrographic data processing algorithms. In many cases, however, although the algorithms might be ideal for parallel implementation (so called ‘embarrassingly parallel’ tasks), limitations in memory, disc and network bandwidth within a single system can have significant limitations on the scalability of these solutions. …

The evaluation and use of uncertainty as a component of hydrographic data processing systems has grown considerably in the last decade. Uncertainty models for sounding data are now common, and progress has been made in developing models, methods and implementations for preserving this uncertainty in intermediate hydrographic data products. Less progress has been made in dealing with expressing the uncertainty in hydrographic data products to the user, however, which we contend should be our ultimate aim.

High rate sound speed profiling systems have the potential to maximize the efficiency of multibeam echosounder systems (MBES) by increasing the accuracy at the outer edges of the swath where refraction effects are at their worst. In some cases, high rate sampling on the order of tens of casts per hour is required to capture the spatio-temporal oceanographic variability and this increased sampling rate can challenge the data acquisition workflow if refraction corrections are to be applied in real-time. Estimation Of Sounding Uncertainty From Measurements Of Water Mass Variability, Jonathan Beaudoin, Brian R. Calder, J Hiebert, Gretchen Imahori

Analysis techniques are introduced that allow for estimation of potential sounding uncertainty due to water mass variability from reconnaissance campaigns in which oceanographic parameters are measured at a high temporal and spatial resolution. The analysis techniques do not require sounding data, thus analyses can be tailored to match any survey system; this allows for pre-analysis campaigns to optimize survey instrumentation and sound speed profiling rates such that a desired survey specification can be maintained. Additionally, the output of the analysis methods can potentially provide a higher fidelity estimation of sounding uncertainty due to water mass variability than uncertainty models in …
