Nectarivorous Feeding Mechanisms In Bats, Patricia W. Freeman Sep 1995

Nectarivorous Feeding Mechanisms In Bats, Patricia W. Freeman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Cranio-dental characteristics are quantified between micro- and megachiropteran nectarivores and compared with microchiropteran animalivores, frugivores, and megachiropteran frugivores. Microchiropteran nectarivores share many characteristics with megachiropteran nectarivores and frugivores, but differ in having a long, narrow head. Megachiropterans have wide zygomata, which would allow for more jaw musculature. Diminutive cheekteeth are characteristic of nectarivory in both suborders, but both have relatively large canines. Teeth in nectarivores can occupy as little as a tenth of the palatal area compared to nearly two-thirds in microchiropteran animalivores. The proportion that the dilambdodont stylar shelf occupies of molars in microchiropteran nectarivores can be as much …

Geology Of The Ogallala/High Plains Regional Aquifer System In Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

This guide is mostly figures with a reference section containing some of the pertinent literature on the Cenozoic geology we will see over the next four days. Copies of some of the cited works will be assembled in a packet and handed out on the morning of April 29th. We will make all 17 stops. if the weather is reasonably good and the roads are passable. On the first day, April 29, we will try to get to stops 1-5, the more distal parts of the Ogallala and younger deposits in Nebraska. On April 30, we will try to visit …

Water Runoff Monitoring In Arid Areas Using Integrated Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques, G. G. Lemoine, Anatoly A. Gitelson, E. Adar, J. G.M. Bakker Jan 1995

Water Runoff Monitoring In Arid Areas Using Integrated Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques, G. G. Lemoine, Anatoly A. Gitelson, E. Adar, J. G.M. Bakker

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Our paper discusses the proposed methodology for the implementation of a monitoring tool for surface water run-off in (semi-)arid areas. This tool is being developed as part of a two year multi-disciplinary shared cost project supported by the European Union AVICENNE initiative. The tool aims at supporting decision making and planning in water run-off management for sustainable development of water resources for human settlement and regeneration of desertification-prone areas in the arid climate zone.

The initial phase of the project (1995) consists of the testing of various remote sensing products for DTM generation and surface characterization. Both SPOT stereo pairs …

Reflectance In The Red And Near Infra-Red Ranges Of The Spectrum As Tool For Remote Chlorophyll Estimation In Inland Waters: Lake Kinneret Case Study, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yosef Z. Yacobi Jan 1995

Reflectance In The Red And Near Infra-Red Ranges Of The Spectrum As Tool For Remote Chlorophyll Estimation In Inland Waters: Lake Kinneret Case Study, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yosef Z. Yacobi

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Signature analysis of reflectance spectra was used for the selection of the most suitable spectral bands for remote sensing of chlorophyll in inland waters. The parameters of the reflectance peak near 700 nm were employed for construction of algorithms for chlorophyll determination. The best model, validated by independent data sets, enabled estimation of chlorophyll concentration with an error < 0.6 mg/m3 for period of low Chl concentration and < 6.5 mg/m3 for period of the phytoplankton bloom. For the purpose of chlorophyll mapping in Lake Kinneret, the use of three relatively narrow spectral bands was sufficient. Radiometric data were also used to simulate radiances …

Remote Sensing Of Chlorophyll In Lake Kinneret Using Highspectral- Resolution Radiometer And Landsat Tm: Spectral Features Of Reflectance And Algorithm Development, Yosef Z. Yacobi, Anatoly Giltelson, Meir Mayo

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

High-resolution reflectance spectra in the range of 400-850 nm were obtained from Lake Kinneret during a period when dense populations of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense dominated the phytoplankton. Chlorophyll (ChI) concentrations ranged from 5.1 to 185 mg m-3 and from 2.4 to 187.5 mg m-3 in the samples of two independent experiments. The most prominent features of the reflectance spectra were: (i) a wide minimum from 400 to 500 nm; (ii) a maximum at 550-570 nm, which did not surpass 3% in samples with high ChI concentration (>20 mg m-3), indicating a strong absorption by …

Seasonal Land-Cover Regions Of The United States, Thomas R. Loveland, James W. Merchant, Jesslyn F. Brown, Donald O. Ohlen, Bradley C. Reed, Paul Olson, John Hutchinson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Research on global change has been hindered by deficiencies in the availability Wand quality of land-cover data (Mather and Sdasyuk 1991; Townshend 1992). To address this deficiency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Nebraska- Lincoln have collaborated in developing a method of land-cover characterization that is suitable for research on global change and on regional patterns of land cover (Loveland et al. 1991; Brown et al. 1993). This methodology is based upon statistical analysis of multidate, meteorological satellite imagery acquired by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Advanced Very High Reso- lution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor complemented …
