Evaluation Of A Recreational Lake Rehabilitation Project, Clyde Brashier
Evaluation Of A Recreational Lake Rehabilitation Project, Clyde Brashier
2019: Dr. Clyde Brashier
Lake Herman, a recreational, shallow, warm water prairie lake near Madison, South Dakota drain in extensively cultivated watershed and acts as a siltation basin for a chain of four lakes. The lake is more than half silted in and since 1968 various rehabilitation efforts have been made, including the construction of silt traps and lake dredging.
Continuation of the monitoring of twenty plus chemical levels and biological populations of green algae, blue-green algae and diatoms has revealed two major changes: (1) ortho phosphate and total phosphorus levels (which increased markedly with the beginning of dredging) have decreased since dredging has …
Vegetation Development In Relation To Age Of River Stabilization Structures Along A Channelized Segment Of The Missouri River, John Arthur Vaubel
Vegetation Development In Relation To Age Of River Stabilization Structures Along A Channelized Segment Of The Missouri River, John Arthur Vaubel
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
During the summer of 1974, I sampled sites of vegetation representative of successional trends in plant communities along the Missouri River floodplain from Sioux City, Iowa, to Rulo, Nebraska. Five district community types listed from youngest to oldest are as follows: Salix spp. – dominated, Populus deltoides – dominated, Platanus occidentalis-Ulmus rubra – dominated, Tilia americana-Quercus rubra – dominated, and Quercus macrocarpa-Carya ovata – dominated vegetation.
The technique of relating vegetation succession to age of river stabilization structures was found to be useful and offered a quite precise method of developing a timescale …

Microfossils From The Big Springs Limestone (Pennsylvanian) In Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Sand-sized residues from partial acetic acid digestion of three samples of the Big Springs Limestone Member of the Lecompton Limestone (Pennsylvanian) from two localities in Cass County, Nebraska, have yielded sixteen genera of microfossils from five major groups of organisms and numerous other whole and partial fossils from seven other groups not identified to the genus level. These fossils include: Protozoa (fusulinids*); Porifera (one spicule type); Bryozoa (two undetermined genera); Brachiopoda (fragments); Gastropoda (two undetermined forms); Ostracoda (Bairdia*, Hollinella*, Moorites*, and one undetermined genus); Crinoidea (whole and partial ossicles*); Echinoidea (whole and partial spines and spine bases*); Holothuroidea (Achistrum …

Seasonal And Spatial Variation In Primary Productivity In Boulder Basin, Lake Mead, Clark County, Nevada, Isamu Aoki
Publications (WR)
The 14C light and dark bottle technique for measurement of primary production was utilized as a means of assessing the amount of inorganic carbon being converted Into organic form by the photosynthesis of phytoplankton populations In the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead.
Spatial and time series changes of productivity levels observed at eight sampling locations within Boulder Basin Indicate that the Influence of treated municipal arts' industrial effluent flowing into Les Vegas Bay is contributing high levels of available nutrients at Las Vegas Wash Inlet to cause productivity to approximate those levels associated with polluted waters.
Productivity levels at …

The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey
The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Data was collected during the 1971-72 snowfall season for the Lake Huron basin. The bulk aerodynamic approach, as formulated by Priestly, was utilized to estimate the daily average flux of heat and moisture over the lake. It was hypothesized that discriminant analysis could be employed to determine the threshold value (discriminant index) of the energy flux which is necessary for the occurrence of the lake-effect snowfall system. To determine the validity of this threshold value, the discriminant index was applied to a series of historical data. The results of this analysis indicated that the discriminant index could be utilized to …

Thermal Plume Entrainment Of Ichthyoplankton At The Vepco Surry Nuclear Power Station : Progress Report, October 1975, John V. Merriner, A. Deane Estes
Reports
Plume entrainment studies at Vepco Nuclear Power Plant located near Surry, Virginia were initiated in August, 1975 by the Ichthyology department of Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The program was undertaken to define the amount and kinds of fish eggs and larvae that are. present in the Cobham Bay area of the James River and become entrained by the heated effluent.

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iv. Virginia Waters, Sandra A. Gleason, Jane F. Stauble
Reports
The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems came the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Biological Inventory In Conjunction With The Las Vegas Wash Unit, Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act Title Ii (P.L. 93-320), W. Glen Bradley, J. Scott Miller
Publications (WR)
The present report is a biological inventory in conjunction with the Las Vegas Wash Unit, Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act, Title II. The boundaries of the project encompass sections of North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, East Las Vegas and areas along Las Vegas Wash extending to its drainage point in Las Vegas Bay in Lake Mead. Therefore, it encompasses a wide array of ecological situations and landscapes ranging from essentially natural to various stages of urban development.
This biological inventory presents basic ecological classifications, descriptions of vegetation, lists of vascular plants and vertebrates known to occur in the area. …
