The Mediterranean Coast Of Israel: A Planner's Approach, Sophia Professorsky Dec 1973

The Mediterranean Coast Of Israel: A Planner's Approach, Sophia Professorsky

Theses and Major Papers

The coastal zone of Israel is facing an ever-growing pressure of varied and conflicting land uses. Spreading urbanization, from Nahariya in the north to Ashkelon in the south, gnaws agricultural areas; the needs for commercial ports and industrial plants stand in conflict with recreational uses of the seashore and, as described before, the natural conditions of land shelf structure, topography and climate, are favourable for both industry and residence so that the narrow stretch of the coastal zone attracts more and more of them.

Channel Improvements, New London, Connecticut: A Case Study, E. L. Gallup

Theses and Major Papers

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the largest single Federal agencies involved in the planning, design and construction of public waterborne transportation facilities. A critical review of a typical corps of Engineers survey report on the improvements to a harbor should provide an insight to the means of allocating the costs and benefits resulting from government expenditures. The purpose of this paper is to review this process using as a vehicle the proposed improvements to the navigation channel at New London, Connecticut

Comprehensive Land Use Planning: Its Development And Potential Impact On Coastal Zone Management, Raymond A. Siuta May 1973

Comprehensive Land Use Planning: Its Development And Potential Impact On Coastal Zone Management, Raymond A. Siuta

Theses and Major Papers

Presently, the United States is in the midst of a "revolution" concerning the management and use regulation of its land resources. This peaceful "revolution" is occurring as a consequence of local government's inability to properly enforce land use controls and to adequately cope with rapid land development. However, this paper in discussing land use controls comments only on those comprehensive efforts directly affecting the coastal zone or indirectly affecting it through all-inclusive land manage regulations. This narrow discussion should not indicate to the reader that specific land use proposals have not been introduce for impact on other physiographic regions.

A Study Of The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Project And Its Impact On The Resources Of The Upper Saint John River Valley, Rosemary M. Manning, Sierra Club, New England Chapter

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This report was under-taken primarily to evaluate the impact that the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project would have upon the resources of the Upper St. John River, and to examine the assertion that the Dickey-Lincoln project constitutes a wise use of the public's environmental and economic resources. Since the case that has been made for the construction of the Dickey-Lincoln project rest primarily on the justification of the project in economic terms, this aspect of the project proposal will be intensively explored.

The Soil Conservation Service : Its Basis Of Co-Operation With Landowners, G W. Spencer, J. E. Watson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Soil Conservation Act of 1945 set up within the Department of Agriculture a Soil Conservation Service under the control of a Commissioner of Soil Conservation.

The Service aims to promote types of land use which will conserve the soil and prevent or overcome soil erosion. It also aims to educate landholders and the public generally in the aims and practice of soil conservation.

This article relates mainly to farm land activities, and in particular the co-operation of the Service with individual primary producer landholders for the prevention and control of erosion on their land.

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1972 Annual Summary, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science Jan 1973

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1972 Annual Summary, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

Oyster setting in Virginia river systems dipped to the lowest levels on record during 1972, according to scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science who regularly monitor oyster grounds for set. A heavy set occurred on the seaside of Virginia's Eastern Shore and limited setting was observed in tributary rivers of the Mobjack Bay, but elsewhere the number of oysters setting on shellstrings and on the bottom in lower Chesapeake Bay in 1972 was far lower than for the previous year, and the lowest overall set ever recorded.
