This report includes information on sustainability and sustainable harvest levels for Western Australian abalone stocks as required under the IFM policy. It also contains additional information on the current state of knowledge of the abalone resource, which provides a broader context for considering allocations. In particular, detailed information is provided on the Roe’s abalone resource in the Perth metropolitan area (commercial Area 7/recreational West Coast Zone).

The regional review for the Pilbara/Kimberley Region is now complete and I would like to thank all members of the review working group for their efforts in what has been a challenging task. I would also like to thank those members of the community who attended public meetings and made submissions on the draft discussion paper. After careful consideration of the Pilbara/Kimberley Recreational Fishing Working Group’s recommendations and the wide range of issues raised in submissions, I have made my decisions in respect to the future management arrangements for recreational fishing in Pilbara/Kimberley Region. Fishing activity on the Cocos is essentially unmanaged at present and there has been some condern by the local community that a number of species, such as coral trout, have declined in numbers over the last decade. This draft strategy was developed by the Western Australian Department of Fisheries who now has responsibility for managing recreational fishing on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services.
