Building A Learning Healthcare System: A Path To Optimizing Big Health Data To Inform Clinical Care Decisions, Danne Charlotte Emily Elbers Jan 2022

Building A Learning Healthcare System: A Path To Optimizing Big Health Data To Inform Clinical Care Decisions, Danne Charlotte Emily Elbers

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

The explosive growth of data and computing power of the last decades has had large impacts on a myriad of domains, not in the least on one of society’s most complex systems: healthcare. In this work, a version of the resulting Learning Healthcare System (LHS) is explored and elements of it have been implemented and are in use at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs today. After an overview of what a LHS is and what it could be once executed in its full form, the chapters will describe in detail some of the individual elements and how they address cogs …

Exploring Interactive Survivorship Plans: Patient Perceived Value, Acceptance And Usability Evaluation Of An Online Breast Cancer Survivorship Tool, Akshat Kapoor

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Having recently been discharged from the hospital, several breast cancer survivors find themselves unable to adjust to the transition and take charge of their own health, away from the confines of the hospital.

With the rapid advancement in treatment methods and techniques, the rate of breast cancer survivors has grown exponentially. UMLS::Association - A Semantic Association Framework for Biomedical Texts

Keith Herbert

Natural Language Processing Lab, Department of Computer Science

Introduction

We present UMLS::Association, a software package to explore the semantic association of biomedical terms with applications for literature-based discovery. Literature-based discovery is an endeavour to ”connect the dots” for scientists between the topics of their research and those of unexpected relevance. However, many approaches rely on the exact wording for the ideas in the research papers being analyzed. The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) provides a way to map natural language phrases in these papers to sequences of abstract yet …

Health Care Informatics Support Of A Simulated Study, Zeinab Salari Far Dec 2012

Health Care Informatics Support Of A Simulated Study, Zeinab Salari Far

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this project is to assess the value of REDCap (Harris, 2009) by conducting a simulated breast cancer clinical trial and demonstration. REDCap is a free, secure, web-based application designed to support data capture for research studies. To assess REDCap's value, we conducted a simulation of a clinical trial study designed to compare the use of two new technologies for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment with current best practice breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. We call the trial, "Real-Time Operating Room BC Diagnostic Treatment (RORBCDT)". The RORBCDT clinical trial is designed to assess the value of a new …
