Health Status Of Emergency Department Patients, Marjean J. Horning

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to help nursing develop a comprehensive care system for patients in selected emergency departments. To develop such a system, it was necessary to know the characteristics of and the health needs of that population.

The problem of this study was to describe the characteristics and health needs of patients in selected emergency departments.

Patients were interviewed using the Kisch Health Status Proxy (KHSP) and the Health Habits Inventory (HHI) as a guide. The KHSP listed acute and chronic conditions that an individual experienced. It gave a numerical score which rated the respondent in good, …

A Community Health Nursing Care Plan, Gayle Clark Aug 1972

A Community Health Nursing Care Plan, Gayle Clark

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Structured nursing care plans are recognized tools in the effective utilization of the nursing process. Community health nursing services have not commonly used structured nursing care plans. The purpose of this study was to improve the management of patient problems through the deliberate use of the nursing process by providing the public health nurse with a structured nursing care plan. A plan was developed which consisted of a nursing history outline, a plan for action tool, and an evaluation form.

The nursing problem of milk anemia was selected to be managed by public health nurses in the study. Six nurses …

Post-Abortion Counseling And Anxiety Levels Of Unmarried Adolescents Having Therapeutic Abortions, Linda Levisen Jun 1972

Post-Abortion Counseling And Anxiety Levels Of Unmarried Adolescents Having Therapeutic Abortions, Linda Levisen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a post-abortion counseling program. It was hypothesized that unmarried adolescents who received counseling following a therapeutic abortion would exhibit significantly fewer negative affects than those who received no counseling. The affects measured were anxiety, depression, hostility, and guilt. Twenty clients were randomly selected for this study. Prior to the abortion, the twenty clients were-tested for negative responses to the unwanted pregnancy. Ten clients received post-abortion counseling twice following the abortion and were tested at each visit for negative affective responses to the abortion. The other ten clients received no …

Patients' Reactions To Witnessing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, Lynn Andree Finch Jun 1972

Patients' Reactions To Witnessing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, Lynn Andree Finch

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to describe the reactions to stress in patients witnessing a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, in order to determine if the witnessing patients' needs are being met adequately, and to determine the effect of a specific psychological stressor on patients.

All resuscitations ("STATS") done over a two-month period at Loma Linda University Medical Center, with oriented patients in the room, were observed and recorded on an Observation Guide. A Questionnaire was also solicited from medical-surgical nursing personnel who had observed "STATS" with witnessing patients in the last three months. The Guide and the Questionnaire were developed from …

Assisting Mothers To Successfully Breast Feed Their Babies, Annabelle Moore May 1972

Assisting Mothers To Successfully Breast Feed Their Babies, Annabelle Moore

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This experimental study tested the effect of a teaching program on success of a group of mothers desiring to breast feed their babies. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving specific instructions on the physiology of lactation and the proper sucking technique would have greater success than mothers not so instructed.

To be categorized as successful the mothers had to have an adequate supply of milk and had to express satisfaction with breast feeding. Criteria for adequacy of milk supply consisted of weight gain of the infant within accepted norms without use of supplementary formula.

Twenty breast feeding mothers who delivered …

Selected Factors Related To Ability To Regain Bladder Function Following Indwelling Catheterization, Jongkolnee Padmasiri May 1972

Selected Factors Related To Ability To Regain Bladder Function Following Indwelling Catheterization, Jongkolnee Padmasiri

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This exploratory retrospective study was designed to evaluate selected factors, including the ability to regain bladder function related to post indwelling urethral catheterization in an acute general hospital population.

The records of 107 patients who met the study criteria became the study population. These patients had three-way urethral catheters, continuous antibacterial irrigation and closed drainage system. Twenty patients died (19 percent) before the catheter was removed. Of the 87 patients who were alive, 37 percent (32 patients) had in-adequate bladder function. Of these 32 patients, no attempt was made to remove the catheter from 15 prior to their hospital discharge. …

A Clinical Comparison Of Six Orthodontic Techniques, Erik H. Madsen May 1972

A Clinical Comparison Of Six Orthodontic Techniques, Erik H. Madsen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Controversy exists concerning the relative superiority of various orthodontic techniques because of the difficulties encountered in making comparative clinical studies of these techniques which are scientific and statistically meaningful. The purpose of this study was to clinically compare six different orthodontic techniques which are currently being taught, relative to a number of criteria, and to do it in a scientifically significant manner.

In order to eliminate as many of the irrelevant variables as possible, the patients were required to pass a relatively stringent screening to participate. Among other things, the patients had to have first molars in Class I relation …

Two Emotional Factors And Weight Loss Among Females Attending A Weight Control Class, Karen Lynn Carrigg, Eileen Rae Wangerin May 1972

Two Emotional Factors And Weight Loss Among Females Attending A Weight Control Class, Karen Lynn Carrigg, Eileen Rae Wangerin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive study was conducted on twenty-four females attending a weight control class to discover the effect of weight loss upon levels of self-esteem and anxiety, as an understanding of the relation of these factors to reduction and control of weight would prove helpful to community health nurses in counseling with overweight and obese persons in the community.

The entire sample was tested for self-esteem (TSCS) and A-State and A-Trait anxiety levels at the initial class of the weight control program sponsored by the Health Education Department of Loma Linda University Medical Center, and again after seven weeks of class …

Perspectives In Hospital Pharmacy Design Based On Functional Requirements, Robert Kenneth Overend Jan 1972

Perspectives In Hospital Pharmacy Design Based On Functional Requirements, Robert Kenneth Overend

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is significant that the separation of pharmacy from medicine occurred for the first time in institutions under ecclesiastic authority which were devoted to the care of the sick. In this period of history, there was little division between the church and state; therefore, business did not play any part in the overall health care scheme. The prime consideration was the delivery of the highest quality of pharmaceutical and medical services. This was best accomplished by a division of labor between the expert in the medical treatment and the expert in the selection, preservation and prepagation of medicinals. In other …

A Study Of Selected Antineoplastic, Antibiotic, And Corticosteroid Drugs In Intravenous Admixtures, Melvin Philip Mcrae Jan 1972

A Study Of Selected Antineoplastic, Antibiotic, And Corticosteroid Drugs In Intravenous Admixtures, Melvin Philip Mcrae

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The benefits of intravenous therapy have become more and more apparent over the years. Medications can be given rapidly with an expectant rapid onset of action. The response to the drugs or fluids can often be closely controlled by regulating the dose or rate of administration. Frequently, adequate blood and tissue levels needed to eradicate many serious infections can be reached only by this route. Intravenous therapy is an especially appropriate method when the use of the oral tract, for one reason or another, cannot be used.

The development of intravenous therapy, however, did not proceed without its difficulties. Problems …

The Formulation And Physical Analyses Of Antibiotic Aerosol Foams For The Development Of Potential Topical Dermatologicals, Joseph Alexander Woelfel Jan 1972

The Formulation And Physical Analyses Of Antibiotic Aerosol Foams For The Development Of Potential Topical Dermatologicals, Joseph Alexander Woelfel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Within the last two decades the consumer market has been deluged with a diversity of aerosol products. The acceptability and utility of these products is reflected by the number found in the household and industry.

An antibiotic foam would obviate the necessity of manual application as is the case with the ointment or cream type products. Therefore, there would be less irritation to the already traumatized or infected sites by mechanical, chemical, or bacterial vectors.

Thus, the objective of this research will be to systematically develop suitable aerosol foam systems which contain therapeutically effective topical antibiotics with a subsequent evaluation …

Spectrophotometric And Microbiological Determination Of The Stability Of Sodium Ampicillin As Affected By Ph, Enrico Frank Raffanti Jan 1972

Spectrophotometric And Microbiological Determination Of The Stability Of Sodium Ampicillin As Affected By Ph, Enrico Frank Raffanti

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The specific purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of pH on the stability of ampicillin sodium for injection. Then, to correlate this information, a pH profile may be established to predict chemical stability with ampicillin sodium alone or when other drugs may be included in the admixture. With a pH profile the pharmacist could predict the length of time after which more than a 10 percent loss of activity would occur. Stability measurements were to be accomplished through a microbiological assay after adding ampicillin sodium to different buffer solutions. At the end of four hours, eight hours, …

Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill Jan 1972

Range And Optimum Growth Concentrations Of Phosphate And Nitrate For Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Thomas E. Hill

Masters Theses

A study was conducted on the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to determine the range and optimum growth concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. There are only a few species of algae for which this type of data is known. Inorganic nutritional data is basic to the understanding of the complexities of phytoplankton ecology and eutrophication.

The "plus" strain of this heterothallic alga was cultured in a TRIS-buffered inorganic medium with various concentrations of sodium phosphate and potassium nitrate and adjusted to a pH of 7.4. The axenic cultures were evaluated at the end of 6 days with a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength …
