In this paper, we show how convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can be used in regression and classification learning problems for noisy and non-noisy functional data (FD). The main idea is to transform the FD into a 28 by 28 image. We use a specific but typical architecture of a CNN to perform all the regression exercises of parameter estimation and functional form classification. First, we use some functional case studies of FD with and without random noise to showcase the strength of the new method. In particular, we use it to estimate exponential growth and decay rates, the bandwidths of …
Deep Learning Recommendations For The Acl2 Interactive Theorem Prover, Robert K. Thompson, Robert K. Thompson
Deep Learning Recommendations For The Acl2 Interactive Theorem Prover, Robert K. Thompson, Robert K. Thompson
Master's Theses
Due to the difficulty of obtaining formal proofs, there is increasing interest in partially or completely automating proof search in interactive theorem provers. Despite being a theorem prover with an active community and plentiful corpus of 170,000+ theorems, no deep learning system currently exists to help automate theorem proving in ACL2. We have developed a machine learning system that generates recommendations to automatically complete proofs. We show that our system benefits from the copy mechanism introduced in the context of program repair. We make our system directly accessible from within ACL2 and use this interface to evaluate our system in …
Adaptive And Topological Deep Learning With Applications To Neuroscience, Edward Mitchell
Adaptive And Topological Deep Learning With Applications To Neuroscience, Edward Mitchell
Doctoral Dissertations
Deep Learning and neuroscience have developed a two way relationship with each informing the other. Neural networks, the main tools at the heart of Deep Learning, were originally inspired by connectivity in the brain and have now proven to be critical to state-of-the-art computational neuroscience methods. This dissertation explores this relationship, first, by developing an adaptive sampling method for a neural network-based partial different equation solver and then by developing a topological deep learning framework for neural spike decoding. We demonstrate that our adaptive scheme is convergent and more accurate than DGM -- as long as the residual mirrors the …
Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy
Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
The two main areas of Deep Learning are Unsupervised and Supervised Learning. Unsupervised Learning studies a class of data processing problems in which only descriptions of objects are known, without label information. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become among the most widely used unsupervised neural net models. GAN combines two neural nets, generative and discriminative, that work simultaneously. We introduce a new family of discriminator loss functions that adopts a weighted sum of real and fake parts, which we call adaptive weighted loss functions. Using the gradient information, we can adaptively choose weights to train a discriminator in the direction …

Classification Of Pixel Tracks To Improve Track Reconstruction From Proton-Proton Collisions, Kebur Fantahun, Jobin Joseph, Halle Purdom, Nibhrat Lohia
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, machine learning techniques are used to reconstruct particle collision pathways. CERN (Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire) uses a massive underground particle collider, called the Large Hadron Collider or LHC, to produce particle collisions at extremely high speeds. There are several layers of detectors in the collider that track the pathways of particles as they collide. The data produced from collisions contains an extraneous amount of background noise, i.e., decays from known particle collisions produce fake signal. Particularly, in the first layer of the detector, the pixel tracker, there is an overwhelming amount of background noise that …
When Is Deep Learning Better And When Is Shallow Learning Better: Qualitative Analysis, Salvador Robles Herrera, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich
When Is Deep Learning Better And When Is Shallow Learning Better: Qualitative Analysis, Salvador Robles Herrera, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, deep neural networks work better than the traditional "shallow" ones, however, in some cases, the shallow neural networks lead to better results. At present, deciding which type of neural networks will work better is mostly done by trial and error. It is therefore desirable to come up with some criterion of when deep learning is better and when shallow is better. In this paper, we argue that this depends on whether the corresponding situation has natural symmetries: if it does, we expect deep learning to work better, otherwise we expect shallow learning to be more effective. …
Quadratic Neural Network Architecture As Evaluated Relative To Conventional Neural Network Architecture, Reid Taylor
Quadratic Neural Network Architecture As Evaluated Relative To Conventional Neural Network Architecture, Reid Taylor
Senior Theses
Current work in the field of deep learning and neural networks revolves around several variations of the same mathematical model for associative learning. These variations, while significant and exceptionally applicable in the real world, fail to push the limits of modern computational prowess. This research does just that: by leveraging high order tensors in place of 2nd order tensors, quadratic neural networks can be developed and can allow for substantially more complex machine learning models which allow for self-interactions of collected and analyzed data. This research shows the theorization and development of mathematical model necessary for such an idea to …

We present a new algorithm for learning unknown governing equations from trajectory data, using and ensemble of neural networks. Given samples of solutions x(t) to an unknown dynamical system x˙(t) = f(t, x(t)), we approximate the function f using an ensemble of neural networks. We express the equation in integral form and use Euler method to predict the solution at every successive time step using at each iteration a different neural network as a prior for f. This procedure yields M-1 time-independent networks, where M is the number of time steps at which x(t) is observed. Finally, we obtain a …

Sequential Survival Analysis With Deep Learning, Seth William Glazier
Sequential Survival Analysis With Deep Learning, Seth William Glazier
Theses and Dissertations
Survival Analysis is the collection of statistical techniques used to model the time of occurrence, i.e. survival time, of an event of interest such as death, marriage, the lifespan of a consumer product or the onset of a disease. Traditional survival analysis methods rely on assumptions that make it difficult, if not impossible to learn complex non-linear relationships between the covariates and survival time that is inherent in many real world applications. We first demonstrate that a recurrent neural network (RNN) is better suited to model problems with non-linear dependencies in synthetic time-dependent and non-time-dependent experiments.

SMU Data Science Review
The problem of forecasting market volatility is a difficult task for most fund managers. Volatility forecasts are used for risk management, alpha (risk) trading, and the reduction of trading friction. Improving the forecasts of future market volatility assists fund managers in adding or reducing risk in their portfolios as well as in increasing hedges to protect their portfolios in anticipation of a market sell-off event. Our analysis compares three existing financial models that forecast future market volatility using the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX) to six machine/deep learning supervised regression methods. This analysis determines which models provide best …

In this paper we describe and survey the field of deep learning, a type of machine learning that has seen tremendous growth and popularity over the past decade for its ability to substantially outperform other learning methods at important tasks. We focus on the problem of supervised learning with feedforward neural networks. After describing what these are we give an overview of the essential algorithms of deep learning, backpropagation and stochastic gradient descent. We then survey some of the issues that occur when applying deep learning in practice. Last, we conclude with an important application of deep learning to the …
