History Of Mathematics, An Intuitive Approach, Alejandro R. Garciadiego Jun 2002

History Of Mathematics, An Intuitive Approach, Alejandro R. Garciadiego

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

The main goal of this essay is to discuss, informally, an intuitive approach to the history of mathematics as an academic discipline. The initial point of departure includes the analysis of some traditional definitions of the concept of 'history' taken from standard dictionaries. This concise dissection attempts to suggest the complexity of the discipline.

Notes On Formal Constructivism, D. Joyner, P. Lejarraga Jun 2002

Notes On Formal Constructivism, D. Joyner, P. Lejarraga

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

Our aim is to sketch some ideas related to how we (as in, we two) think we (as in, we humans) think. "That theory is useless. It isn't even wrong." - Wolfgang Pauli. Our hope in this paper is to provide a theory, admittedly somewhat vague, of how we think about mathematics. We also hope our ideas do not cause the reader to be reminded of Pauli's quote above. These notes were motivated by the interesting book by Changeaux and Connes.

Portfolio Assessment In Liberal Arts Mathematics, Mike Kenyon Jun 2002

Portfolio Assessment In Liberal Arts Mathematics, Mike Kenyon

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

This paper describes my efforts to incorporate problem-solving portfolios into my liberal arts mathematics course. I begin with a description of the components of the portfolios and the factors I consider in evaluating them. I then address some of the more significant obstacles I have encountered as well as what I consider to be among the major benefits. A selection from one student’s portfolio is appended.

Four Anharmonic Oscillators On A Circle, J. N. Boyd, R. G. Hudepohl, P. N. Raychowdhury Jan 2002

Four Anharmonic Oscillators On A Circle, J. N. Boyd, R. G. Hudepohl, P. N. Raychowdhury

Virginia Journal of Science

Four identical, uniformly separated particles interconnected by ideal anharmonic springs are constrained to move on a fixed, frictionless circular track. The Lagrangian for the system is written and then transformed by matrix operations suggested by the symmetry of the arrangement of springs and particles. The equations of motion derived from the transformed Lagrangian yield four natural frequencies of motion.

Environmental Factors Contributing To The Disaggregation Of A Colonial Cyanoprokaryote And Its Influence On Picoplankton Abundance Within Lake Joyce, Virginia, Lewis F. Affronti Jr., B. Thomas Duquette Jan 2002

Environmental Factors Contributing To The Disaggregation Of A Colonial Cyanoprokaryote And Its Influence On Picoplankton Abundance Within Lake Joyce, Virginia, Lewis F. Affronti Jr., B. Thomas Duquette

Virginia Journal of Science

A colonial cyanoprokaryote, Aphanocapsa holsatica and autotrophic picoplankton abundance were monitored weekly over a two year period in Lake Joyce, Virginia. Significant differences were observed in both the cyanoprokaryote and picoplankton abundance over the study period and an inverse relationship was observed between these two plankton groups. Disaggregation of colonies was shown to contribute to picoplankton populations where water temperature and precipitation input apparently trigger colony dispersion. This relationship is suggested to occur in other aquatic habitats. Results of this work and its implications for ecosystem dynamics are discussed.

Field Extensions Having The Unique Subfield Property, And G-Cogalois Extensions, Toma Albu Jan 2002

Field Extensions Having The Unique Subfield Property, And G-Cogalois Extensions, Toma Albu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We present a short proof, based on Cogalois Theory, of a result due to Acosta de Orozco and Vélez (1982, J. Number Theory 15, 388-405) characterizing separable simple radical field extensions with the unique subfield property, and prove that these extensions are precisely the simple G--Cogalois extensions with a cyclic Kneser group.

Ko-Groups Of Bounded Flag Manifolds, Yusuf Ci̇van Jan 2002

Ko-Groups Of Bounded Flag Manifolds, Yusuf Ci̇van

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We exhibit an appropriate suspension of bounded flag manifolds as a wedge sum of Thom complexes of associated complex line bundles. We use the existence of such a splitting to assist our computation of real and complex K-groups. Moreover, we compute the Sq^2-homology of bounded flag manifolds to make use of relevant Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence of KO-theory.

\Theta-Euclidean L-Fuzzy Ideals Of Rings, Ayten Koç, Erol Balkanay Jan 2002

\Theta-Euclidean L-Fuzzy Ideals Of Rings, Ayten Koç, Erol Balkanay

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The concept of fuzzy ideals is extended by introducing \theta -Euclidean L-fuzzy ideals in rings. In particular, some structural theorems for a \theta -Euclidean L-fuzzy ideal of R are proved.

Left Adjoint Of Pullback Cat^1- Profinite Groups, Murat Alp Jan 2002

Left Adjoint Of Pullback Cat^1- Profinite Groups, Murat Alp

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we present a brief review crossed modules \cite{whitehead}, cat^1-groups \cite{loday}, profinite crossed modules \cite{kortim}, cat^1-profinite groups \cite{kortim}, pullback profinite crossed modules \cite{kortim} and also the pullback cat^1- profinite groups \cite{hind}. We prove that the pulback cat^1-profinite group has a left adjoint which is the induced cat^1-group.

New Tensor Norms And Operator Ideals Associated To Interpolation Spaces Between Sequence Spaces, G. Castaneda, J. A. Lopez Molina, M. J. Rivera Jan 2002

New Tensor Norms And Operator Ideals Associated To Interpolation Spaces Between Sequence Spaces, G. Castaneda, J. A. Lopez Molina, M. J. Rivera

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We introduce a wide class of tensor norms g_{\lambda,\rho} which are defined with the help of interpolation spaces between perfect sequence spaces defined by a general parameter real interpolation method. We also characterize the associated \lambda_{\rho}-nuclear and \lambda_{\rho}-integral operators.
