Catalytic Deoxygenation Of Model And Realistic Feeds To Fuel-Like Hydrocarbons Over Supported Nickel-Copper Catalysts, Deyshon Ward, Kazi Javed

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The goal was to make a renewable fuel by using catalysts to remove oxygen molecules from fats. This is a current issue that society faces today because nonrenewable fossil fuels hurt the environment more than they help it. There are two components that make up a heterogeneous catalyst, a support and a reduced metal active phase. The active metal phases Nickel, Palladium, Platinum have been studied in the past on an alumina and carbon supports. We were investigating other supports using Nickel as the active phase component to determine the effect the support has on the catalyst removing oxygen of …

Modeling And Forecasting Crime Patterns In Bellingham, Washington, Zachary Domingo, Eric Shoner May 2018

Modeling And Forecasting Crime Patterns In Bellingham, Washington, Zachary Domingo, Eric Shoner

Scholars Week

Our purpose is to use time series analysis to model and forecast the underlying dynamics behind crime in Bellingham, Washington. Using recent monthly data from the Bellingham Police Department, we considered singular spectrum analysis and autoregressive moving average modelling techniques to estimate significant deterministic patterns in the data. After examining the multitude of data provided, we narrowed down to two categories of crime: alcohol offenses and domestic violence. We created two time series models for each category and compared them to each other. The better performing model was used to forecast the number of crime incidents for ten months and …

Short-Term Volatility Curve Predictions Using Singular Spectrum Analysis, Nick Odell May 2018

Short-Term Volatility Curve Predictions Using Singular Spectrum Analysis, Nick Odell

Scholars Week

This project aims to produce accurate volatility forecasts, using high-frequency financial time series data. The primary mathematical methods used are Functional Data Analysis, time series analysis techniques such as Autoregressive Models and a comparison between Multi-variate and Uni-variate Singular Spectrum Analysis. These results aim to be useful for financial risk quantification.

An Optimized Route For Q100'S Bert And Kristin To Visit All Jersey Mike's Subs In Atlanta For Charity Apr 2018

An Optimized Route For Q100'S Bert And Kristin To Visit All Jersey Mike's Subs In Atlanta For Charity

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Bert Show is a popular morning show on Atlanta’s Q100 radio station. They host a non-profit organization that provides a “magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families” called “Bert’s Big Adventure.” On March 28th, 2018, thirty-seven locations of Jersey Mike’s are participating in the their Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving to support Bert’s Big Adventure. The goal is to have two popular radio show hosts visit each of these locations for some photos and presence to draw in more customers! But how do we get two …

Mathematics Of The Significant Tornado Parameter, Aaron Baker Apr 2018

Mathematics Of The Significant Tornado Parameter, Aaron Baker

Undergraduate Research Conference

The idea of this project came from my curiosity of weather and especially how severe storms are predicted. There are many parameters used to predict severe weather that use mathematical formulas. After sorting through the parameters, the STP was the one selected due to its use of other parameters for prediction of tornadoes, as well as concepts used in Single and Multi-Variable Calculus, such as areas between curves and vector magnitude and direction, and learning how to use new graphs than what is normally used.

On Passing The Buck, Adam J. Hammett, Anna Joy Yang Apr 2018

On Passing The Buck, Adam J. Hammett, Anna Joy Yang

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Imagine there are n>1 people seated around a table, and person S starts with a fair coin they will flip to decide whom to hand the coin next -- if "heads" they pass right, and if "tails" they pass left. This process continues until all people at the table have "touched" the coin. Curiously, it turns out that all people seated at the table other than S have the same probability 1/(n-1) of being last to touch the coin. In fact, Lovasz and Winkler ("A note on the last new vertex visited by a random walk," J. Graph Theory, …

Building A Better Risk Prevention Model, Steven Hornyak Mar 2018

Building A Better Risk Prevention Model, Steven Hornyak

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

This presentation chronicles the work of Houston County Schools in developing a risk prevention model built on more than ten years of longitudinal student data. In its second year of implementation, Houston At-Risk Profiles (HARP), has proven effective in identifying those students most in need of support and linking them to interventions and supports that lead to improved outcomes and significantly reduces the risk of failure.

P-46 A Periodic Matrix Model Of Seabird Behavior And Population Dynamics, Mykhaylo M. Malakhov, Benjamin Macdonald, Shandelle M. Henson, J. M. Cushing

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Rising sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Pacific Northwest lead to food resource reductions for surface-feeding seabirds, and have been correlated with several marked behavioral changes. Namely, higher SSTs are associated with increased egg cannibalism and egg-laying synchrony in the colony. We study the long-term effects of climate change on population dynamics and survival by considering a simplified, cross-season model that incorporates both of these behaviors in addition to density-dependent and environmental effects. We show that cannibalism can lead to backward bifurcations and strong Allee effects, allowing the population to survive at lower resource levels than would be possible otherwise.

Preserver Problems On Matrices, Zejun Huang Feb 2018

Preserver Problems On Matrices, Zejun Huang

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Preserver problems on matrices concern the characterization of linear or nonlinear maps or operators on matrices that preserve properties of the space of matrices or leave certain functions, subsets, and relations invariant. In this talk, I will present some results on both linear and nonlinear preserver problems on matrices.
