This presentation is about graphs (the vertex-edge kind, not the y = f(x) kind). A graph is a mathematical object that represents objects and some relationship among them; the objects are represented by vertices and the relationships are represented by the edges. Graphs have applications in just about every field imaginable, including artificial intelligence, social network theory, and parallel computing theory. A directed graph is a type of graph used to represent relationships that are one-sided or not symmetric. Many ecological and spatial processes are complex in nature and are not accurately modeled by linear models. Regression trees promise to handle the high-order interactions that are present in ecological and spatial datasets, but fail to produce physically realistic characterizations of the underlying landscape. The "autocart'' (autocorrelative regression trees) R package extends the functionality of previously proposed spatial regression tree methods through a spatially aware splitting function and novel adaptive inverse distance weighting method in each terminal node. The efficacy of these autocart models, including an autocart extension of random forest, is demonstrated on multiple datasets. This highlights the ability …

Optimal Control Of An Hiv Model With Gene Therapy And Latency Reversing Agents, Andrew B. Grant, Paul Hazelton

In this project, we study the dynamics of HIV under gene therapy and latency reversing agents. For constant treatment controls, we establish global stability of the disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium based on the value of the basic reproductive ratio. We then consider time dependent controls and formulate an associated optimal control problem that emphasizes reduction of the latent reservoir. Characterizations for the optimal control profiles are found using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. We perform numerical simulations of the optimal control model using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta forward-backward sweep method. In this project, we consider a system of five ordinary differential equations which describe the population dynamics of HIV/AIDS when individuals are tested for the virus and then moved onto antiretroviral therapy. We include a Holling Type-II response to model the complacency of the population in response to the number of AIDS cases. We prove global stability of the disease-free equilibrium when the basic reproductive ratio is less than one. We then derive an optimal control problem and solve it theoretically using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle and numerically using the Forward-Backward Sweep Method. Bootstrap percolation on a graph is a process which models the spread of an "infection" given an initially infected set of vertices of the graph. To state the problem more precisely, suppose G is a graph, k is a natural number, and I_0 is a set of initially infected vertices. Then for any discrete time t, we define I_t to be I_{t-1} along with any vertex outside of I_{t-1} which has at least k edges to vertices of I_{t-1}. Over the course of a year, I investigated reformative approaches to the teaching of calculus. My research revealed the substantial findings of two educators, Michael Oehrtman and Pat Thompson, and inspired me to design a course based upon two key ideas, covariation and approximation metaphors. Over a period of six weeks, I taught a course tailored around these ideas and documented student responses to both classroom activities and quizzes. Responses were organized intonarratives, covariation, rates of change, limits, and delta notation. Covariation with respect to rates of change was found to be incredibly complex, and students would often see it …

When mortality statistics are reported for infectious diseases, they commonly reflect the ratio for the entire population impacted from it. This causes an underestimation since the frail members of the population are impacted at a higher rate. With the remaining healthy members, the mortality rate becomes skewed. With this project, we study predicting mortality under varying frailty conditions to account for the hidden heterogeneity's impact on the parameter estimates.

A commutative doubly-idempotent semiring (cdi-semiring) (S,V,·,0,1) is a semilattice (S,V,0) with x V 0 = x and a semilattices (S,·,1) with identity 1 such that x0 = 0, and x(y V z) = xy V xz holds for all x, y, z ϵ S. Bounded distributive lattices are cdi-semirings that satisfy xy = x ^ y, and the variety of cdi-semirings covers the variety of bounded distributive lattices. Chajda and Länger showed in 2017 that the variety of all cdi-semirings is generated by a 3-element cdi-semiring. We show that there are seven cdi-semirings with a V-semilattice of height …

FL2-algebras are lattice-ordered algebras with two sets of residuated operators. The classes RA of relation algebras and GBI of generalized bunched implication algebras are subvarieties of FL2-algebras. We prove that the congruences of FL2-algebras are determined by the congruence class of the respective identity elements, and we characterize the subsets that correspond to this congruence class. For involutive GBI-algebras the characterization simplifies to a form similar to relation algebras.
