Using Alternating Minimization And Convexified Carleman Weighted Objective Functional For A Time-Domain Inverse Scattering Problem, Nguyen T. Thanh

This paper considers a 1D time-domain inverse scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation in which penetrable scatterers are to be determined from boundary measurements of the scattering data. It is formulated as a coefficient identification problem for a wave equation. Using the Laplace transform, the inverse problem is converted into an overdetermined nonlinear system of partial differential equations. To solve this system, a Carleman weighted objective functional, which is proved to be strictly convex in an arbitrary set in a Hilbert space, is constructed. An alternating minimization algorithm is used to minimize the Carleman weighted objective functional. Numerical results are …

Shelf break flows are often characterized by along-isobath jets with cross-shelf currents associated with tides and waves guided by variable topography. Here, we address the question: Can a superposition of such flows produce significant aperiodic cross-shelf transport? To answer this question, we use a barotropic analytic model for the jet based on a similarity solution of the shallow water equations over variable topography, a wave disturbance determined by the topography, and a diurnal tidal disturbance. Research-based assessment instruments (RBAIs) are ubiquitous throughout both physics instruction and physics education research. The vast majority of analyses involving student responses to RBAI questions have focused on whether or not a student selects correct answers and using correctness to measure growth. This approach often undervalues the rich information that may be obtained by examining students’ particular choices of incorrect answers. In the present study, we aim to reveal some of this valuable information by quantitatively determining the relative correctness of various incorrect responses.
