Recognizing And Reducing Ambiguity In Mathematics Curriculum And Relations Of Θ-Functions In Genus One And Two: A Geometric Perspective, Shantel Spatig Aug 2022

Recognizing And Reducing Ambiguity In Mathematics Curriculum And Relations Of Θ-Functions In Genus One And Two: A Geometric Perspective, Shantel Spatig

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Anxiety and mathematics come hand in hand for many individuals. This is due, in
part, to the fact that the only experience they have with mathematics is what some
mathematics educators refer to as "schoolmath," which uses a somewhat different
language than real mathematics. The language of schoolmath can cause individu-
als to have confusion and develop misconceptions related to several mathematical
concepts. One such concept is a fraction. In chapter one of this report, one possible
reason for this is discussed and a possible solution is purposed.
In chapter three of this report, genus-two curves admitting an elliptic involution …

Analyzing Suicidal Text Using Natural Language Processing, Cassandra Barton May 2022

Analyzing Suicidal Text Using Natural Language Processing, Cassandra Barton

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Using Natural Language Processing (NLP), we are able to analyze text from suicidal individuals. This can be done using a variety of methods. I analyzed a dataset of a girl named Victoria that died by suicide. I used a machine learning method to train a different dataset and tested it on her diary entries to classify her text into two categories: suicidal vs non-suicidal. I used topic modeling to find out unique topics in each subset. I also found a pattern in her diary entries. NLP allows us to help individuals that are suicidal and their family members and close …

Calculating The Cohomology Of A Lie Algebra Using Maple And The Serre Hochschild Spectral Sequence, Jacob Kullberg Dec 2018

Calculating The Cohomology Of A Lie Algebra Using Maple And The Serre Hochschild Spectral Sequence, Jacob Kullberg

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Lie algebra cohomology is an important tool in many branches of mathematics. It is used in the Topology of homogeneous spaces, Deformation theory, and Extension theory. There exists extensive theory for calculating the cohomology of semi simple Lie algebras, but more tools are needed for calculating the cohomology of general Lie algebras. To calculate the cohomology of general Lie algebras, I used the symbolic software program called Maple. I wrote software to calculate the cohomology in several different ways. I wrote several programs to calculate the cohomology directly. This proved to be computationally expensive as the number of differential forms …

Efficiently Representing The Integer Factorization Problem Using Binary Decision Diagrams, David Skidmore Aug 2017

Efficiently Representing The Integer Factorization Problem Using Binary Decision Diagrams, David Skidmore

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Let p be a prime positive integer and let α be a positive integer greater than 1. A method is given to reduce the problem of finding a nontrivial factorization of α to the problem of finding a solution to a system of modulo p polynomial congruences where each variable in the system is constrained to the set {0,...,p − 1}. In the case that p = 2 it is shown that each polynomial in the system can be represented by an ordered binary decision diagram with size less than 20.25log2(α)3 + 16.5log2(α)2 + …

The Eyes Have It: Eye Tracking Data Visualizations Of Viewing Patterns Of Statistical Graphics, Trent Fawcett

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As statistical graphics continue to expand to manage an ever growing amount of diverse data, a need to evaluate the effectiveness of graphics, both basic and complex, has arisen. Technological advancements have given a means to evaluate the effectiveness of graphs and graphical components through eye tracking systems. Eye tracking systems are likewise in need of software that will enable easy evaluation and exploration of data. The focus of this Master's Report is to evaluate the dual solution. An exploration of an eye tracker setup is made, with extensive consideration of testing statistical graphics providing a basis for continued research …

Managing The Spread Of Alfalfa Stem Nematodes Ditylenchus Dipsaci: The Relationship Between Crop Rotation And Pest Re-Emergence, Scott Jordan May 2015

Managing The Spread Of Alfalfa Stem Nematodes Ditylenchus Dipsaci: The Relationship Between Crop Rotation And Pest Re-Emergence, Scott Jordan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Alfalfa is a critical cash/rotation crop in the western region of the United States, where it is common to find crops affected by the alfalfa stem nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci). Understanding the spread dynamics associated with this pest would allow end-users to design better management programs and farming practices. This is of particular importance given that there are no nematicides available against alfalfa stem nematode and control strategies largely rely on crop rotation to non-host crops or by planting resistant varieties. I present a basic host-parasite model that describes the spread of the alfalfa stem nematode on alfalfa crops. With this …

Survival Analysis For Truncated Data And Competing Risks, Michael Steelman May 2015

Survival Analysis For Truncated Data And Competing Risks, Michael Steelman

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this project is to consider the problems of left truncation and competing risks in analyzing censored survival data, and to compare and contrast various approaches for handling these problems. The motivation for this work comes from an analysis of data from the Cache County Memory Study. Study investigators were interested in the association between early-life psychologically stressful events (e.g., parental or sibling death, or parental divorce, among others) and late-life risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). While conventional methods for censored survival data can be applied, the presence of left truncation and competing risks (i.e., other adverse events …

Comparing Linear Mixed Models To Meta-Regression Analysis In The Greenville Air Quality Study, Lynsie M. Daley

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The effect of air quality on public health is an important issue in need of better understanding. There are many stakeholders, especially in Utah and Cache Valley, where the poor air quality as measured by PM 2.5 levels and consequent inversions can sometimes be the very worst in the nation. This project focuses on comparing two statistical methods used to analyze an important air quality data set from the Greenville Air Quality Study, focusing on a lung function response variable. A linear mixed model, with a random factor for subject, gives slope estimates and their significance for predictor variables of …

High Cognitive Test Item Development And Implementation, Ashley Salisbury May 2014

High Cognitive Test Item Development And Implementation, Ashley Salisbury

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In secondary math classrooms there has been a movement toward discovery and problem solving based instruction. This type of instruction requires teachers to teach on what is often considered a higher level of cognition and allows students to discover more ideas and concepts on their own as opposed to traditional lecture style. Teachers with well thought-out examples, questions, and activities provide students with tools to solve problems on their own requiring students to make mathematical discoveries and connections. These skills not only benefit students in their math class but are analytical skills students can use throughout their lives.

With this …

The Optimal Release Of Sterile Males In Pest Management, Sergio Ramirez May 2014

The Optimal Release Of Sterile Males In Pest Management, Sergio Ramirez

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

With an application of the sterile insect technique, it is our goal to know the optimal rate of production of sterile males in order to control an insect pest invasion and protect crops. Starting with a fundametal relationship between costs of production and feeding rates, we construct an objective functional. We then use the relationships between the dierent stages of female reproduction to build the state equations. Once, we have dened the optimal control problem, we use the simulated annealing algorithm to determine the amount of sterile males to be released at each discrete time event. Multiple calculations are made …

Students Rise To The Challenge Of Modeling Yeast Growth Despite Sour Hiccups From Imperfect Data, Alicia Caldwell May 2013

Students Rise To The Challenge Of Modeling Yeast Growth Despite Sour Hiccups From Imperfect Data, Alicia Caldwell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Students rarely receive the opportunity to experience a learning activity involving mathematical modeling. This paper describes a lab in which students in an Applied Mathematics in Biology course observe the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast strain, in differing sugar concentrations for use in learning modeling. They parameterized the logistic equation and an alternate model, which they themselves constructed, based on the data they collected. I participated in this lab as a student in 2012 then observed and reviewed the work of other students involved. I found that students gained a deeper understanding of limiting factors and the role of …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A team of students, artists, and researchers at the Center for Game Science at the

University of Washington are trying to create video games that can discover optimal

pathways for learning. They have focused so far on early mathematics education,

including topics such as fractions and algebra, which are some of the main bottlenecks

preventing students from pursuing a career in science. As a result, the educational

on-line game \Refraction" was created, which is aimed at students who start learning

fraction computations. When the students are playing the game online, all the data

and information, such as mouse movements and …

A Classroom Experiment: Implementing A Math-Talk Environment In A University Setting, Janice Bodily Aug 2012

A Classroom Experiment: Implementing A Math-Talk Environment In A University Setting, Janice Bodily

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A need for reform in teaching mathematics has long been recognized. The traditional classroom with the sage on the stage lacks a higher level of engagement for the students and therefore, produces a lower level of student satisfaction. The math-talk classroom is one attempt to engage students and to raise the level of interaction and discussion, thus enabling students to increase their level of comprehension. In an effort to create a math-talk experience in my Calculus II course, I applied the methodology of Thinking Through a Lesson Protocol (TTLP) to test its effectiveness in assisting the instructor in creating an …

Assessing Changes In The Abundance Of The Continental Population Of Scaup Using A Hierarchical Spatio-Temporal Model, Beth E. Ross May 2012

Assessing Changes In The Abundance Of The Continental Population Of Scaup Using A Hierarchical Spatio-Temporal Model, Beth E. Ross

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In ecological studies, the goal is often to describe and gain further insight into ecological processes underlying the data collected during observational studies. Because of the nature of observational data, it can often be difficult to separate the variation in the data from the underlying process or 'state dynamics.' In order to better address this issue, it is becoming increasingly common for researchers to use hierarchical models. Hierarchical spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal models allow for the simultaneous modeling of both first and second order processes, thus accounting for underlying autocorrelation in the system while still providing insight into overall spatial …

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Disaster: A Graphical Assessment Of Its Impact On Wildlife, Anvar Suyundikov May 2012

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Disaster: A Graphical Assessment Of Its Impact On Wildlife, Anvar Suyundikov

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. Considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in history, oil flowed for three months and approximately five million barrels of oil spilled through by mid-July 2010. In this report, we analyze fish and bird data to assess the impact of the oil spill on the Gulf wildlife. Our findings based on the available fish data for 2005, 2006, and 2010 are not very helpful to make a judgement on the negative impact of the oil spill on fish species. On the other hand, the bird …

Validation Study: A Case Study Of Calculus 1 (Math 1210), Abibat Adebisi Lasisi

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This report discusses the process of assessing the validity of a test. We provide an analysis of the validation study of a test administered to the first semester calculus students at Utah State University in the Fall 2011 semester. The results of our analysis suggest that the test has some measurement relevance. This implies that the subject contents of the test correlate with the syllabus of the course. Thus, the measurement has some learning level relevance. Our analysis also revealed that the measurement has a high reliability coefficient which signifies some internal consistency of the mea- surement. The relevancy and …

Ignoring The Spatial Context In Intro Statistics Classes - And Some Simple Graphical Remedies, Nathan Voge May 2012

Ignoring The Spatial Context In Intro Statistics Classes - And Some Simple Graphical Remedies, Nathan Voge

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Statistical data often have a spatial (geographic) context, be it countries of the world, states in the US, counties within a state, cities across the globe, or locations where measurements have been taken. However, most introductory statistics books do not even suggest that such data often are not independent from location, but rather are eected by some spatial association. Remedies are simple: Display data via various map views and brie y discuss which additional information can be extracted from such a graphical representation. In this report, we will visit a variety of popular introductory statistics textbooks and show how some …

A Collection And Analysis Of Local Middle Grade Math Projects For The Common Core, Lynnette Checketts May 2012

A Collection And Analysis Of Local Middle Grade Math Projects For The Common Core, Lynnette Checketts

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The State of Utah has changed the mathematics core curriculum several times over the past decade. The latest change was the adoption of the Common Core State Standards introducing both grade level content standards and standards of mathematical practice that emphasize how students are to study and reason with mathematics at all grade levels. According to state officials, these standards require more mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and deeper understanding than previous core curriculum documents. One way to address this change is for teachers to educate using projects during their instruction as unit starters, daily lessons, and for evaluation purposes. Yet …

Algebraic Properties Of Killing Vectors For Lorentz Metrics In Four Dimensions, Jesse W. Hicks Dec 2011

Algebraic Properties Of Killing Vectors For Lorentz Metrics In Four Dimensions, Jesse W. Hicks

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Four-dimensional space-times with symmetry play a central role in the theory of general relativity. In 1961, in the book Einstein Spaces, A.Z. Petrov gave a complete local classification of four-dimensional space-times based upon their local isometry group, that is, their Lie algebra of Killing vector fields. In this report we discuss algebraic and geometric properties of these Lie algebras. A database of these properties has been computed for the five-dimensional Lie algebras of Killing vectors found in Petrov. As an application of our work, we present dieomorphisms between a few pairs of these Lie algebras of Killing vectors.

Modeling Phloem Temperatures Relative To Mountain Pine Beetle Phenology, Matthew Jared Lewis Aug 2011

Modeling Phloem Temperatures Relative To Mountain Pine Beetle Phenology, Matthew Jared Lewis

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

We explore a variety of methods to estimate phloem temperatures from ambient air temperatures suitable for the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae. A model's ability to induce the same phenology generated from observed phloem temperatures measures its effectiveness rather than a simple reconstruction of phloem temperatures. From a model's phenology results we are able to ascertain whether the model produces a similar amount of developmental energy exhibited by observed phloem temperatures.

Three models performed best: Newton, Newton South and Matching. The Newton model uses Newton's Law of Cooling to effectively estimate northern aspect phloem temperatures. The Newton South model …

The reference material includes the basic hypothesis tests taught in an introductory statistics course, the accompanying distributions, and prerequisite information.

Estimation Of Beta In A Simple Functional Capital Asset Pricing Model For High Frequency Us Stock Data, Yan Zhang May 2011

Estimation Of Beta In A Simple Functional Capital Asset Pricing Model For High Frequency Us Stock Data, Yan Zhang

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This project applies the methods of functional data analysis (FDA) to intra-daily returns of US corporations. It focuses on an extension of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) to such returns. The CAPM is essentially a linear regression with the slope coefficient β. Returns of an asset are regressed on index return. We compare the estimates of β obtained for the daily and intra-daily returns. The variability of these estimates is assessed by two bootstrap methods. All computations are performed using statistical software R. Customized functions are developed to process the raw data, estimate the parameters and assess their variability. …

Controlling Error Rates With Multiple Positively-Dependent Tests, Abdullah Al Masud May 2011

Controlling Error Rates With Multiple Positively-Dependent Tests, Abdullah Al Masud

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It is a typical feature of high dimensional data analysis, for example a microarray study, that a researcher allows thousands of statistical tests at a time. All inferences for the tests are determined using the p-values; a smaller p-value than the α-level of the test signifies a statistically significant test. As the number of tests increases, the chance of observing some small p-values is very high even when all null hypotheses are true. Consequently, we make wrong conclusions on the hypotheses. This type of potential problem frequently happens when we test several hypotheses simultaneously, i.e., the multiple testing problem. …

On The Use Of Log-Transformation Vs. Nonlinear Regression For Analyzing Biological Power-Laws, Xiao Xiao Jan 2011

On The Use Of Log-Transformation Vs. Nonlinear Regression For Analyzing Biological Power-Laws, Xiao Xiao

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Power-law relationships are among the most well-studied functional relationships in biology . Recently the common practice of fitting power-laws using linear regression on log-transformed data (LR) has been criticized, calling into question the conclusions of hundreds of studies. It has been suggested that nonlinear regression (NLR) is preferable, but no rigorous comparison of these two methods has been conducted. Using Monte Carlo simulations we demonstrate that the error distribution determines which method performs better, with LR better characterizing data with multiplicative lognormal error and NLR better characterizing data with additive normal error. Analysis of 471 biological power-laws shows that both …

Virtual Manipulatives In The Classroom And Resulting Articles And Lesson Plans, Cheryl Juliana

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Upon coming across mathematical manipulatives generated and produced by Utah State University, as a math teacher, I conducted a classroom teaching experiment in three pre-algebra classes with students of various achievement levels. After teaching the entire year using no manipulatives in the classroom, I tested my students with a general, end-of-year, core criterion, or cumulative test. Their scores were noted. The students in the study group were then given opportunities to try several manipulatives offered on the "National Library of Virtual Manipulatives," both as a class, and alone, and then retested. The following paper gives the parameters of the study, …
