Supporting Our Struggling Students: Details Of A Hybrid Mathematics Summer Bridge Program, Anita White, Patrick Davis, Marti Shirley

Faculty Publications & Research

It goes without saying that the schools in the consortium are used to dealing with gifted and talented students. However with such high-caliber students, we also have high expectations. What resources do we offer to the students who struggle at our institutions? This presentation will detail the setup and results of EXCEL2 - a summer bridge program offered at the Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy to help students who were unable to meet course expectations. The program operated through a hybrid online/in-person model - with instruction primarily given through video conferencing but coupled with an on-campus experience.

A Psychometric Investigation Of A Mathematics Placement Test At A Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Gifted Residential High School, Hannah Ruth Anderson Aug 2020

A Psychometric Investigation Of A Mathematics Placement Test At A Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Gifted Residential High School, Hannah Ruth Anderson

Publications & Research

Educational institutions, at all levels, must justify their use of placement testing and confront questions of their impact on students’ educational outcomes to assure all stakeholders that students are being enrolled in courses appropriate with their ability in order to maximize their chances of success (Linn, 1994; Mattern & Packman, 2009; McFate & Olmsted III, 1999; Norman, Medhanie, Harwell, Anderson, & Post, 2011; Wiggins, 1989). The aims of this research were to (1) provide evidence of Content Validity, (2) provide evidence of Construct Validity and Internal Consistency Reliability, (3) examine the item characteristics and potential bias of the items between …

Using Robotics And Engineering Design Inquiries To Optimize Learning For Middle Level Teachers: A Case Study, Iman Chafik Chahine, Norman Robinson Iii, Kimbeni Mansion May 2020

Using Robotics And Engineering Design Inquiries To Optimize Learning For Middle Level Teachers: A Case Study, Iman Chafik Chahine, Norman Robinson Iii, Kimbeni Mansion

Publications & Research

This exploratory case study reports findings on 20 middle-level science and mathematics teachers’ perceptions of the effectiveness of a one-year project in which teachers engaged in using robotics and engineering design inquiries in their classrooms. Principled by Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (SLT) and using mixed methods approaches, the study measured teachers' efficacy through the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (MTEBI) and observation logs before and after the program. The results of this study showed statistically significant differences between PRE MTEBI and POST MTEBI scores. Furthermore, five themes emerged that illuminated potential affordances and constraints that teachers perceive as opportunities and …

The Wright Stuff: An Integrative Approach To Stained Glass, Cassandra Wissink Armstrong Feb 2020

The Wright Stuff: An Integrative Approach To Stained Glass, Cassandra Wissink Armstrong

Professional Learning Day

In this session we'll explore the scientific and mathematical influences behind the artistic stained glass creations of Frank Lloyd Wright, and use them to create our own Wright-inspired stained glass designs. This is a truly integrative lesson that touches on properties of glass, linear functions, and artistic design.

Ziplines And Stuntwork, Kelly W. Remijan Jan 2020

Ziplines And Stuntwork, Kelly W. Remijan

Teacher Resources

This activity involves an engineering activity which connects the work of stuntmen/stuntwomen working with ziplines to the concept of linear functions. Students create a physical model replicating a given situation and then model the zipline algebraically by writing the equation of the zipline.
