Freeze-dried CNFs can be modified by mechanochemical (MC) processes with minimal use of auxiliary solvents, however aggregation of nanofibers during lyophilization compromises their granularity and reaction efficiency. Adding 10 wt% tert-butanol (TBA) to aqueous slurries of wood-derived CNF creates a eutectic mixture that reduces hornification during lyophilization, resulting in well-formed aerogels with minimal shrinkage in volume. CNFs lyophilized from mixtures containing at least 10 wt% TBA exhibit an order of magnitude increase in specific surface area relative to CNFs freeze-dried from water alone. Nonaqueous dispersions of graphene nanoplatelets (GrNPs) can be used to prepare thin films and coatings free of surfactants, but typically involve polar organic solvents with high boiling points and low exposure limits. Here, we describe the mechanochemical exfoliation and dispersion of GrNPs in volatile aprotic solvents such as ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and acetone, which rank favorably in green solvent selection guides. GrNPs in powder form were exfoliated with a solvent on a horizontal ball mill for 48 h and then sonicated at moderate power to produce suspensions in excess of 300 μg/mL with minimum loss of dispersion stability over 7 …

The interplay between local mechanical strain energy and lateral frictional forces determines the shape of carbon nanotubes on substrates. In turn, because of its nanometer-size diameter, the shape of a carbon nanotube strongly influences its local electronic, chemical, and mechanical properties. Few, if any, methods exist for resolving the strain energy and static frictional forces along the length of a deformed nanotube supported on a substrate. We present a method using nonlinear elastic rod theory in which we compute the flexural strain energy and static frictional forces along the length of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) manipulated into various shapes …
