Plastic is a cheap, robust and versatile material with numerous practical uses that contribute to the convenience of modern day life. However the very same properties that make it uniquely diverse and hardy also contribute to the hazards it poses to the ecosystems and human health. If current consumption and manufacturing practices remain unchanged, there will be hundreds of millions of additional tons of plastic introduced into the environment over the coming decades. An insatiable thirst for oil has led poorly coordinated, risk-prone megasystems deeper into the ocean in search of new oil reserves. Profit-driven agendas at the corporate level have a top-down effect within these megasystems. Cost-cutting and risk-downplaying leaves the field employees unprepared to handle emergencies. A series of costly mistakes led to the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which caused extensive damage to an already fragile ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico. The recommendations contained within this paper were reached after careful consideration of the public submissions provided in response to the working group’s discussion paper A Quality Future for Recreational Fishing in the Gascoyne (Fisheries Management Paper 124). The working group would like to thank everyone who forwarded submissions on the discussion paper and attended public meetings to provide input. The wide variety of comments and views expressed reflect the diverse nature of the recreational fishing sector. The seed industry has routinely incorporated new technology into its research and development programs. Plant generic engineering is the most recent technology to be utilized for seed product development efforts. New sources of herbicide, insect, and disease resistance are being incorporated into crop plants using cellular and molecular biology techniques.

New regulatory guidelines have been developed which require regulatory approval before genetically engineered plants can be reseed in the field and ultimately marketed.
