Carbohydrate based small molecular gelators are important classes of compounds which can form useful soft materials with many practical applications. Although many different types of effective gelators have been reported, the rational design of a molecular hydrogelator is still challenging. In this research, we combined the structural features of two classes of monosaccharide based molecular gelators and obtained a new class of glycolipids that can function as molecular gelators. These new compounds were synthesized by introducing a triazole functional group to a protected 2-glucosamine through Cu(i) catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC). A series of eighteen new glycolipids containing 4,6-O …

Activated Cyclopropanes: A Remarkable Breadth Of Recent Chemistry, James R. Green, Victor Snieckus

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

The reactions of cyclopropanes activated by electron-withdrawing groups and electron-donating groups – donor–acceptor (DA) cyclopropanes – and with alkenyl or alkylidene substituents has been an area of recent intense research activity. This Cluster contains contributions from many of the leading research groups in this area, and provides a concise introduction to the rich ring-opening, ring-expansion, dimerization, and cycloaddition chemistry of these compounds.

Photocycloaddition Of Allenes, Crystal Ward Nov 2008

Photocycloaddition Of Allenes, Crystal Ward

Theses and Dissertations

For the past ten years the Fleming research group has been involved in the research of allene compounds. We have explored the synthesis of allenes as well as several reactions involving allenes, such as oxidation and nitrene addition. Recently, we have explored the synthesis and photochemistry of allenic alcohols tethered to silicon. There are literature examples using allenes in synthesis, but very few examples exist using allenes in photochemical cycloaddition reactions. We have found that a diisopropylallenyloxy(cinnamyloxy)silane derivative undergoes [2+2] photochemical cycloaddition to produce a cyclobutylsilane product when irradiated for 60-75 minutes.
