Analysis Of Indianapolis Waterways For Evidence Of Eutrophication And Contamination Induced By Urban Pollution, Kiley Grace Wardwell
Analysis Of Indianapolis Waterways For Evidence Of Eutrophication And Contamination Induced By Urban Pollution, Kiley Grace Wardwell
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The focus of my research will be largely focused on the water quality of the White River throughout Indianapolis. I will be testing water samples from five different points along the White River to analyze three of its contents, assessing the differing levels of pollution along different points progressing down the river and through the city. The locations I have chosen to test coincide with water gauge sites along the White River and are as follows: Logan Street in Noblesville, 82nd Street, Broad Ripple Dam, Michigan Road and Raymond Street. The surface water at these five locations will be tested …
The Characterization And Reactivity Of Tris(4-Methylpyrazolyl)Methane And Its Tungsten And Molybdenum Metal Complexes, Julia M. Pomeroy
The Characterization And Reactivity Of Tris(4-Methylpyrazolyl)Methane And Its Tungsten And Molybdenum Metal Complexes, Julia M. Pomeroy
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The scorpionate ligand tris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) has contributed to the understanding of coordination and organometallic chemistry and has proven to be useful in the synthesis of metalloprotein models. Studies focusing on the similar ligand, tris(pyrazolyl)methane (Tpm), have recently been made possible with improved synthetic techniques. Characterization of the Tpm ligand and its metal derivatives, [TpmW(CO)3L]+ and [TpmMo(CO)3L]+, unveiled unexpected activity in the 1H NMR chemical shift of the methane hydrogen after the coordination of a seventh ligand. The more electronegative the seventh ligand was, the more downfield the chemical shift appeared. Various analogs of Tpm have since been synthesized that substitute …
Seven Coordinate Molybdenum And Tungsten Complexes Containing Tpm And Tpm Derivatives And The Impact Of Ligand Substitution On Nmr Chemical Shifts, Cole Seager
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
A series of known and new seven coordinate molybdenum and tungsten complexes of tris(pyrazolyl)methane (Tpm) and substituted Tpm, [TpmM(CO)3X]+, have been synthesized. Depending on the identity of X, (bromo, iodo, hydrido) and the substitution of the Tpm ligand, substantial chemical shift differences are observed for the hydrogen on the central carbon of the Tpm ligand. Factors impacting the chemical shift of the hydrogen on the central carbon of the Tpm ligand, such as the electron donating ability of the Tpm ligand and the electronegativity of the additional ligand on the metal, will be discussed.
Case Studies Of Potential Reference Materials In Cultural Heritage Science, Heidi Kastenholz
Case Studies Of Potential Reference Materials In Cultural Heritage Science, Heidi Kastenholz
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The study of cultural heritage objects requires reference materials for comparison in order to determine the identity of chemical compounds in historically/culturally significant artifacts. The reference materials available today can be inaccurately labeled, can contain inauthentic compounds, or can simply be formed differently than what the labeled material should be. Utilizing the laboratory at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, three case studies were conducted over three different potential reference materials in order to properly identify each of the three materials being focused on here. Based on the analysis, the labels for these materials often do not match the …
Substrate Specificity Of The Lipn Hydrolase From Mycobacterium Ulcerans, Stephanie Raynor
Substrate Specificity Of The Lipn Hydrolase From Mycobacterium Ulcerans, Stephanie Raynor
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Mycobacterium ulcerans is the causative agent of Buruli ulcer, a tropical skin disease that affects thousands of individuals annually. Recent studies have revealed that lipolytic enzymes are involved in the pathogenicity processes of mycobacterium and could be potential targets for novel antibiotics. LipN is one proposed serine hydrolase in Mycobacterium ulcerans that contains the conserved α/β hydrolase protein fold and utilizes the conserved catalytic traid of serine, histidine, and aspartate/glutamate. The physiological substrate and biological role of LipN from M. ulcerans have not yet been determined. In this study, LipN was cloned into a pET28a plasmid and overexpressed in an …
Synthesis Of Fluorogenic Substrates For The Enzymatic Characterization Of Rv0045c From M. Tuberculosis, Kelly Jo Mckenna
Synthesis Of Fluorogenic Substrates For The Enzymatic Characterization Of Rv0045c From M. Tuberculosis, Kelly Jo Mckenna
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the pathogenic bacterial agent commonly responsible for tuberculosis, or TB. Although treatment exists for the active form of tuberculosis, no method has been developed for eliminating M tuberculosis in its dormant state. One hypothesized method for the elimination of dormant TB is to develop an inhibitor specific for M tuberculosis esterases and lipases, as these esterases and lipases are essential to the survival of dormant TB infection. In this research, the substrate specificity of the Rv0045c esterase from M tuberculosis was studied due to the essential role of Rv0045c in TB metabolism and its dissimilarity to other …
Characterization Of Esterase Activity From The Bacteria, Francisella Tularensis, The Causative Agent Of Tularemia, Leigh Anna Weston
Characterization Of Esterase Activity From The Bacteria, Francisella Tularensis, The Causative Agent Of Tularemia, Leigh Anna Weston
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Francisella tularensis is the bacteria responsible for causing the disease tularemia and is listed as one of the top three-biowarfare agents. Among the proteins essential to the virulence and infectivity of F.tularensis are multiple esterases, which are enzymes that break down various ester, thioester, and amide bonds. In this project, the catalytic activity, substrate speci fi city, and structure of a putative esterase from F.tularensis was studied. Latent fluorophores based on the molecule, fluorescein, were unmasked by the enzymatic activity of the esterase and the increase in fluorescence was measured over time to determine how well the e tcrase recognized …
Chiral Recognition Study Of A Bimolecular Process In Amino Acid Chiral Ionic Liquids, Laurel Millikan Heckman
Chiral Recognition Study Of A Bimolecular Process In Amino Acid Chiral Ionic Liquids, Laurel Millikan Heckman
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In this study, chiral ionic liquid (CIL) solvents were prepared and tested for their chiral discrimination ability by probing with luminescence quenching. The CIL's were also tested for their impurities, viscosity and density. These experiments will help to determine the ability of CIL's to act as solvents in asymmetric catalysis. The chiral ionic liquids in this study were composed of amino acid methyl ester cations and bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide or bistri flimide anions (i.e. I-alanine methyl ester bistriflimid e, d-alanine methyl ester bistr iflim ide and I-leuci ne methyl ester bistriflimde). Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and its quenching in the chiral …
An Analysis Of The Environmental And Hormonal Effects On The Growth And Development Of The Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Megan Knight
An Analysis Of The Environmental And Hormonal Effects On The Growth And Development Of The Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Megan Knight
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Ceratodon has not been documented in scientific literature as thoroughly as other species of moss such as Funaria or Tortula. Commonly known as fire moss or purple horned moss, Ceratodon is often reddish or yellow-brown and the spore capsules are usually purple (Crum, 1983). A picture of the species growing in its natural habitat is shown in Figure 4. Ceratodon often grows in tufts and is considered a weed, often thriving in polluted or disturbed areas and frequently invading after a fire (Crum 1983). Ceratodon belongs to the class Bryopsida, which also contains the previously mentioned Funaria and Tortula species. …
