Plantain (Plantago Lanceolata L.) Growth Islimited Under Waterlogging, S. S. Wilson, Daniel J. Donaghy, D. J. Horne, Soledad Navarrete, P. D. Kemp
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.; PL) is becoming an increasingly important component of New Zealand dairy pastures because of its ability to reduce nitrogen losses to the environment. However, widespread suggestions of its poor persistence, have led to industry concern over its suitability for dairy systems. Anecdotal evidence suggests that PL does not cope well in waterlogged soil, yet there is little scientific literature relevant to this issue. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of waterlogging stress on PL growth and survival. In a glasshouse, the performance of PL under waterlogging was evaluated against perennial …

Evaluation Of Paspalum Spp. With Adaptation To Poorly Drained Soils In The Tropical Americas, Michael Peters, B. Hincapié, P. Avila, C. E. Lascano
IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
A collection of Paspalum accessions obtained from Brazil was tested for their adaptation to poorly drained soils. Three accessions were selected based on their DM production and nutritive value. Productivity and quality of these three accessions was stable over the periods of maximum and minimum rainfall, giving potential for continuous forage supply throughout the year in the tropical Americas. Grazing trials for the selected accessions are underway.

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)
Poor drainage is found on about 11.3% of agricultural land in Latin America where physiography promotes flooding, high groundwater tables, or stagnant surface water (waterlogging). Waterlogging drastically reduces oxygen diffusion into the soil causing hypoxia which is the main limitation that reduces root aerobic respiration and the absorption of minerals and water. Under waterlogging conditions plants can adapt with traits and mechanisms that improve root aeration such as production of aerenchyma and development of adventitious roots. During the rainy season Brachiaria pastures are exposed to waterlogging conditions that can severely limit pasture productivity and hence animal production. The main objective …
Quantitative Trait Loci Associated With Waterlogging Tolerance In A Soft Red Winter Wheat Mapping Population, Diana Carolina Ballesteros Benavides
Quantitative Trait Loci Associated With Waterlogging Tolerance In A Soft Red Winter Wheat Mapping Population, Diana Carolina Ballesteros Benavides
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Waterlogging is caused when water stays superficially in the soil for an extended period of time, creating an anaerobic environment which decreases plant growth and grain yield at maturity. Despite the impact of waterlogging on wheat production both globally and in the southeastern U.S., very little is known about the genetic control of waterlogging tolerance in wheat. The objective of this study was to determine the amount of genetic variation for vegetative stage waterlogging tolerance present within a wheat recombinant inbred line (RIL) population and to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with tolerance and productivity. Experiments were carried out …

Waterlogging Increases The Infestation Level Of The Pest Psyllid Creiis Lituratus On Eucalyptus Dunnii, Christine Stone, Kathryn Chestnut, Trent Penman, Doland Nichols
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
The lerp-forming psyllid, Creiis lituratus Froggatt, is the most damaging pest of Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden plantations growing in north-eastern New South Wales. During the past 10 years there have been numerous reports that stands of E. dunnii planted on low-lying areas that were prone to waterlogging were also prone to infestation by C. lituratus. The objective of this shadehouse study was to determine whether C. lituratus prefers young E. dunnii exposed to intermittent waterlogging compared with other treatments (drought, normal watering and a control using normal watering plus an insecticide). Also we assessed whether the nutritional status of E. dunnii …
