The Mobrup LCDC has persevered for three years with its efforts to produce a catchment plan. They readily acknowledge that their work is just beginning as they now wrestle with this working plan to form something which will have application on each individual's enterprise to ensure a sustainable future for this catchment.This report is a collation of their ideas, an inventory of works done in the catchment and the best advice which research and local knowledge can provide.

The North Stirling Land Conservation District is located between Katanning and Albany on the northern edge of the Stirling Ranges in south-western Western Australia.It includes parts of the Shires of Cranbrook and Tambellup, covering approximately 100,000ha of the catchment of the North Stirling basin. The basin is a flat area formed on Eocene sediments with poorly defined drainage lines and many salt lakes. It is surrounded by low granite and sandstone hills. The climate is Mediterranean, with cool wet winters and hot dry summers. Average annual rainfall ranges from 375-500 mm per annum. There is very little surface or underground …

The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to remote sensing, and knowledge and practice in image processing techniques for the extraction of information from remotely sensed data. Aerial photography is the original form of earth remote sensing, and is still a widely used and important data source for many purposes. This course is directed principally at the analysis of digital image data recorded by satellite or airborne platforms. Remote sensing is considered to be the methodology of collecting and interpreting target information over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Knowledge of the pasture resource and its capabilities is essential to sustainable use of the rangelands. Rangeland managers must be able to recognise firstly the different pasture types, and secondly, the differences between present condition classes for each type. Both factors affect the stock carrying capacity, and appropriate pastoral management of a pasture. The 590 Ha Winchester sub-catchment has no apparent external drainage. Groundwater levels are rising causing site specific problems. Wind erosion has severely affected some areas.The objective of this report is to provide a sub-catchment management plan that is based on sustainable agricultural systems and a hydrological equilibrium. The recommendations aim to meet this objective in the long term. Recommendations to achieve short term results are considered separately. These measures have relatively high installation and maintenance costs. They should be considered as interim management methods until the recommendations for long-term control become effective (perhaps 3 - 5 years after implementation).
