New Bis(Imino)Pyridine Complexes Of Iron(Ii) And Iron(Iii), And Their Catalytic Activity In The Mukaiyama Aldol Reaction, Pushkar Shejwalkar, Nigam P. Rath, Eike B. Bauer

Nigam Rath

New iron(II) and iron(III) complexes bearing bis(imino)pyridine ligands were synthesized and successfully applied to the Mukaiyama aldol reaction. The two complexes [FeCl2 L] (L = bis(imino)pyridine ligand, 55% isolated yield) and [LFe(μCl)3FeCl3] (76%) were obtained employing FeCl2 and FeCl3 iron sources, respectively, and characterized by elemental analyses, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy and, one example, by X-ray diffraction. The two new iron complexes were subsequently employed as catalysts in the Mukaiyama aldol reaction after abstraction of two chlorides by AgSbF6 to obtain the aldol products in 43% to virtually quantitative yield (CH2Cl2 solvent, room temperature, 3.5 to 16 h reaction time). …

Production Of Bioelectricity, Bio-Hydrogen, High Value Chemicals And 3 Bioinspired Nanomaterials By Electrochemically Active Biofilms, S. Kalathil, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. H. Cho, J. Lee May 2013

Production Of Bioelectricity, Bio-Hydrogen, High Value Chemicals And 3 Bioinspired Nanomaterials By Electrochemically Active Biofilms, S. Kalathil, Mohammad Mansoob Khan Dr, M. H. Cho, J. Lee

Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan

Microorganisms naturally form biofilms on solid surfaces for their mutual benefits including protection from environmental stresses caused by contaminants, nutritional depletion or imbalances. The biofilms are normally dangerous to human health due to their inherited robustness. On the other hand, a recent study suggested that electrochemically active biofilms (EABs) generated by electrically active microorganisms have properties that can be used to catalyze or control the electrochemical reactions in a range of fields, such as bioenergy production, bioremediation, chemical/biological synthesis, bio-corrosion mitigation and biosensor development. EABs have attracted considerable attraction in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), such as microbial fuel cells and microbial …

Acid-Free Nitration Of Benzene And Toluene In Zeolite Nazsm-5, Scott Kirkby Jan 2013

Acid-Free Nitration Of Benzene And Toluene In Zeolite Nazsm-5, Scott Kirkby

Scott J. Kirkby

The syntheses of nitrobenzene and p-nitrotoluene directly from benzene, toluene, and NO2 within the pore network of the initially acid-free zeolite NaZSM-5 are reported for the first time. The active species , formed by the interaction of NO2 with the Na+ cations present on the internal surface, results in the acid-free electrophilic substitution of the aromatic ring. There are two distinct reservoirs for the reagents: one associated with close proximity to the cation sites and the other associated with the siliceous areas of the pore network. Up to 34% of the hydrocarbon and 70% of the available NO2 are reacted …

Metal ions play an essential role in the functioning of all biological systems. They interact with charged and polar groups of all biopolymers. The study of structural and functional properties of metal binding proteins is an important area of modern physical and chemical biology. Metal cations and metal binding proteins are involved in all crucial cellular activities. Many pathological conditions are correlated with abnormal metal metabolism. Encyclopedia of Metalloproteins is a key resource that provides basic, accessible, and comprehensible information about this expanding field.

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski Jan 2013

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.

Room-Temperature Vibrational Properties Of The Bimn2o5 Mullite, F Silva Júnior, C. Paschoal, R. Almeida, R. Moreira, W. Paraguassu, M. Castro Junior, A. Ayala, Z. Kann, Michael Lufaso Dec 2012

Room-Temperature Vibrational Properties Of The Bimn2o5 Mullite, F Silva Júnior, C. Paschoal, R. Almeida, R. Moreira, W. Paraguassu, M. Castro Junior, A. Ayala, Z. Kann, Michael Lufaso

Michael W. Lufaso

Raman and infrared spectroscopic measurements were performed and combined with lattice dynamics simulations in order to describe the room temperature vibrational properties of the BiMn2O5 mullite ceramic. A total of 13 Raman active modes and 19 infrared active modes were observed. The lattice dynamics simulation was used to assign the observed bands and to discuss the phonon behavior of this compound. The obtained dielectric constant and unloaded quality factor parameters for BMO ceramic obtained from the infrared data suggest the applicability of the BiMn2O5 as a possible candidate to microwave applications.

Efficient Oxidation Of Arylmethylene Compounds Using Nano-Mno2, Baskar Nammalwar, Chelsea Fortenberry, Richard Bunce, Sathish Lageshetty, Kevin Ausman

Kevin D. Ausman

Nano-MnO2 has been developed as an efficient and mild reagent for the high-yield oxidation of arylmethylene compounds to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones as well as benzylic ethers to esters. The reagent is conveniently prepared and shows reactivity superior to synthetic (Attenburrow) MnO2 and commercial MnO2 under both microwave and conventional conditions. Typical reactions are performed using 25 wt % of nano-MnO2 relative to the substrate, and the reagent can be recycled up to six times without significant loss of activity. The observed conversions correlate well with surface-water content in the different MnO2 samples, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis.

Selective Nitration Of Chlorobenzene By No2 In The Alkali Zeolite Nazsm-5, Scott J. Kirkby Dec 2012

Selective Nitration Of Chlorobenzene By No2 In The Alkali Zeolite Nazsm-5, Scott J. Kirkby

Scott J. Kirkby

Chlorobenzene was reacted with NO2, in the initially acid-free zeolite NaZSM-5, to yield para-chloronitrobenzene exclusively. The precursors were loaded sequentially into self-supporting pellets of the zeolite, contained within a stainless steel cell, from the gas phase. The reaction proceeds spontaneously at room temperature. It is, however, very temperature dependent and effectively ceases at zero degrees Celsius. The reaction was monitored in situ using FT-IR. The active nitrating agent is formed from the partial electron donation by the NO2 to the Na+ cations present in the zeolite lattice. Under the reaction conditions, chlorobenzene is not readily mobile through the pore system; …
