Microwave Synthesis And Photophysical Characterization Of Heteroleptic Iridium Complexes For Applications In Oleds And Lecs, Allyson Dixon

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

A series of heteroleptic, iridium-based ionic transition metal complexes (ir-iTMCS), with the purpose to serve as potential components of OLED and LEC devices, were synthesized through a green, combinatorial-based approach. This work utilized a microwave reactor in order to bring our research into closer alignment with the tenets of green chemistry. The aim of this research was to assess the effects of structural differences, specifically steric crowding, on the photophysical characteristics of the complexes. The radiative quantum efficiencies (Φf) and excited state lifetimes (τ ) of the series of Ir-iTMCs were investigated. The rates of radiative (kr …

Fluorinated Phthalonitriles And Phthalocyanines: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Properties, Marius Pelmus Dec 2020

Fluorinated Phthalonitriles And Phthalocyanines: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Properties, Marius Pelmus

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Since their discovery at the beginning of the 20th century, phthalocyanines (Pc) have come a long way; today they are replacing the porphyrins (natural products) in most of their applications. The functionalization of the organic macrocycle, the use of different metals, and the change of the axial ligands resulted in Pc applications in a wide range of fields, ranging from photochemistry, paints, catalysis, to fuel cells and cosmetic products.

In Dr. Gorun’s group was developed a series of electron-deficient Pcs that benefit from a Teflon-like chemical shield, meant also to break the π-π interactions, namely the F64PcM …

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Composites: Superhydrophobic Polymer Coatings With Photoreactive Perfluorinated Phthalocyanines, Abdul Azeez Aug 2019

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Composites: Superhydrophobic Polymer Coatings With Photoreactive Perfluorinated Phthalocyanines, Abdul Azeez

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

ABSTRACT

We report partly fluorinated and silicon-based polymers that incorporate inorganic/organic materials capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) using only visible light and air. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which incorporated a known perfluorinated phthalocyanine photosensitizer, F64PcZn, supported on silicon and titanium oxides was further modified via chemical surface roughening to exhibit enhanced hydrophobicity when used as a coating. Water contact angles as high as ~159° have been observed, vs. ~ 92° for the unmodified polymer. The polymer matrix, however, does not resist the ROS it produces as evidenced by spectroscopic and SEM data. A polysiloxane matrix was similarly …

Stabilized, Hybrid Solid-State Photocatalysts For Water Purification: Preparation, Properties And Performance Under Visible Light Irradiation, Karpagavalli Ramji Dec 2018

Stabilized, Hybrid Solid-State Photocatalysts For Water Purification: Preparation, Properties And Performance Under Visible Light Irradiation, Karpagavalli Ramji

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Stabilized heterogeneous photocatalysts that use only solar light and air have been prepared and successfully employed to decontaminate water from organic pollutants. Organic dye pollutants present, for example in textile effluents, are one of the major sources of water pollution owing to their limited biodegradability, toxicity and potential carcinogenic risks. Before certifying water for public consumption, reuse in industries or for discharge in surface water the organic pollutants must be degraded, an effort that is energy intensive and currently requires complex methodologies. We report solid-state photocatalysts that use only visible light and air to treat wastewater. Perfluoroalkyl perfluoro-substituted zinc phthalocyanine …

Tumor-Targeting Fluorinated Phthalocyanines For Theranostic Applications, Erik Nathaniel Carrión May 2018

Tumor-Targeting Fluorinated Phthalocyanines For Theranostic Applications, Erik Nathaniel Carrión

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Hydrocarbon-based therapeutics and imaging agents are prone to chemical oxidation and degradation resulting in loss of activity and limited functional utility. Thus, more material is required to achieve long-lasting therapeutic effects. Phthalocyanines (Pcs) and their metal complexes (PcMs) can be utilized as prodrugs requiring only renewable energy resources namely, air and light, for cancer therapy and diagnostic (theranostic) applications related to photodynamic therapy (PDT). Replacement of labile C-H bonds in the Pc scaffold with a combination of fluoro and perfluoroisopropyl groups has resulted in a stable yet reactive oxidation catalyst of biological significance and importance. For example, F64PcZn, …

Separation Of Nitrito- And Nitropentamminecobalt (Iii) Chloride By High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Tisha Hutchinson Dec 2016

Separation Of Nitrito- And Nitropentamminecobalt (Iii) Chloride By High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Tisha Hutchinson

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography, chosen because of its ability to collect many data points over a long period of time with minimal involvement, was used to separate pentaamminenitritocobalt(III) chloride and pentaamminenitrocobalt(III) chloride. Pentaamminenitritocobalt(III) chloride was prepared, made into a concentrated solution, divided into aliquots and allowed to isomerize to pentaamminenitrocobalt(III) chloride over a period of twelve to eighteen hours. An injection was made approximately every forty-five minutes. The samples were analyzed at three wavelengths, 254 nm, 460 nm and 490 nm. The absorbance was collected and was used to determine the kinetics of the reaction.

The isomerization from …

Epoxy Siloxane Self-Cleaning Coating Using F64pczn/Tio2 Photocatalyst Composite, James F. Sullivan May 2016

Epoxy Siloxane Self-Cleaning Coating Using F64pczn/Tio2 Photocatalyst Composite, James F. Sullivan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

A new photocatalytic composite powder incorporated into a siloxane epoxy polymer has been shown to yield a highly efficient self-cleaning coating. The composite, which makes greater use of light in the visible/near-infrared (NIR) region, was prepared by coating a nano-particle photocatalytic TiO2 with 3% w/w of F64PcZn photosensitizer resulting in a dark green powder. The F64PcZn/P25 TiO2 composite exhibited a greater photo-induced degradation of methyl red, a model surface contaminant, compared to traditional nano-particle photocatalytic TiO2. Singlet oxygen (1Δg 1O2), generated form the F64PcZn, …

Fluorinated Metallo Phthalocyanines For Chemical And Biological Catalysis, Hemantbhai H. Patel Aug 2015

Fluorinated Metallo Phthalocyanines For Chemical And Biological Catalysis, Hemantbhai H. Patel

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The rational design of robust oxidation catalysts based on organic molecules is hindered by the presence of labile C-H bonds. We have shown recently that replacing all C-H bonds by a combination of fluoro- and perfluoro-groups in a bioinspired Cytochrome P450 model based on a phthalocyanine, Pc, scaffold results in a stable yet reactive oxidation catalyst. The Pc cobalt complex catalyzes, for example, the aerobic oxidation of thiols to disulfides, a reaction of both biological significance and industrial importance.

The presence of robust C-F bonds, however, renders the catalyst unsuitable for attachment to solid-state supports, except via van der Waals …
