Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Of Nanostructured Cerium Oxide, Neil J. Lawrence
Synthesis And Catalytic Activity Of Nanostructured Cerium Oxide, Neil J. Lawrence
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Cerium oxide (ceria, CeO2-x where x is 0 to 0.5) has been one of the most widely used heterogeneous catalysts particularly in three way catalytic converters. Most of the catalytic traits can be attributed to two properties of ceria: first, the high mobility and storage capacity of oxygen within the lattice; second, the ease with which cerium changes between Ce3+ and Ce4+ states. These properties, combined with the abundance of cerium on earth, make ceria a low-cost highly effective alternative to noble metal catalysts. Recent research has been focused on the nanoscale properties of ceria.
The effect …

Thermodynamic and adsorption properties of protein monolayer electrochemistry (PME) are examined for Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin (AZ) immobilized at an electrode modified with a networked film of monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) to assess if nanoparticle films of this nature offer a more homogeneous adsorption interface compared to traditional self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified electrodes. Specifically, electrochemistry is used to assess properties of surface coverage, formal potential, peak broadening, and electron transfer (ET) kinetics as a function of film thickness. The modification of a surface with dithiol-linked films of MPCs (Au225C675) provides a more uniform binding interface for AZ that results in voltammetry with …

Enhanced Electrochemistry Of Nanoparticle-Embedded Polyelectrolyte Films: Interfacial Electronic Coupling And Distance Dependence, Callie E. Dowdy, Michael C. Leopold
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Factors affecting the electronic communication believed to be responsible for the enhanced solution electrochemistry observed at electrodes modified with hybrid polyelectrolyte–nanoparticle (PE–NP) film assemblies were systematically investigated. Specifically, the faradaic current and voltammetric peak splitting recorded for cyclic voltammetry of ferricyanide redox species (Fe(CN)63−/4−) at films constructed with various architectures of citrate-stabilized gold NPs embedded in polyelectrolyte films composed of poly-l-lysine and poly-S-styrene were used to establish the relative importance of both distance and electronic coupling. Layer-by-layer construction of PE–NP films allowed for the position and density of NPs to be varied within the film to assess electronic coupling between …

New Electrochemical And Optical Detection Methods For Biological And Environmental Applications, Royce Nicholas Dansby-Sparks
New Electrochemical And Optical Detection Methods For Biological And Environmental Applications, Royce Nicholas Dansby-Sparks
Doctoral Dissertations
Detection of chromium and vanadium is of interest for biomedical and environmental applications. The two metals have narrow limits between being essential and toxic for humans. Ultra-sensitive techniques have been studied to measure Cr and V at low concentrations found in human blood and environmental samples. Bismuth film and mercury-alloy electrodes have been developed as alternatives to traditional Hg-based electrodes for Cr and V detection. While catalytic adsorptive stripping voltammetry (CAdSV) has been used to detect Cr and V, little is known about the process. The mechanisms of CAdSV have been probed to provide a better understanding of its exceptional …
Synthesis And Reactions Of A Tungsten Dioxo Complex, Deborah Bryant
Synthesis And Reactions Of A Tungsten Dioxo Complex, Deborah Bryant
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Metal dioxo complexes are largely known for their ability to epoxidize olefins. The importance of these reactions is reflected in the patents for the ARCO and Halcon processes from the late 1960's. It is very difficult to find literature that shows other indications for metal dioxo complexes.
Catalytic olefin dimerization has become significant in the realm of green chemistry for "atom economical" reactions. Many transition metals have been examined as catalysts for olefin dimerization, but the largest volume of work has been performed using group 8 transition metals, particularly nickel, palladium and platinum. This is especially true for the specific …

Electronic Structure Of Lithium Tetraborate, David J. Wooten
Theses and Dissertations
Due to interest as neutron detection material, an investigation of Li2B4O7(110) and Li2B4O7(100) was undertaken, utilizing photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopic techniques. The measured band gap depended on crystallographic direction with the band gaps ranging from 8.9±0.5 eV to 10.1±0.5 eV. The measurement yielded a density of states that qualitatively agreed with the theoretical results from model bulk band structure calculations for Li2B4O7; albeit with a larger band gap than predicted, but consistent with the known deficiencies of LDA and DFT calculations. …

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
CLASSIFICATION, SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PYRIDYL PORPHYRIN FRAMEWORKS
Lucas D. DeVries, M.S. University of Nebraska, 2010 Adviser: Wonyoung Choe
Structural analysis of a solid-state material is vital because the structure often determines the physical (or chemical) properties of the material. An understanding of the relationship between structural components and bulk properties can be used to design materials with specific properties. To achieve such understanding, two things are required: a rigorous structural analysis method and a study of the properties of materials with noteworthy structural features.
In this thesis, the author reviews 44 pyridyl porphyrin frameworks in an effort to determine …

The Reaction Of A Water Soluble Platinum Compound With Methionine And Derivatives, Yueh Ying Liao
The Reaction Of A Water Soluble Platinum Compound With Methionine And Derivatives, Yueh Ying Liao
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Water soluble platinum complexes are a recent area of emphasis of cisplatin chemistry. The water soluble complexes could have a reduced toxicity compared with cisplatin. Oxaliplatin, which has an oxalate leaving group, has previously been shown to have less nephro-toxicity and higher water solubility than cisplatin. [Pt(en)(oxalate)] (en = ethylenediamine) has been prepared from Pt(en)Cl2 and silver oxalate. This complex has been reacted with methionine and N-acetylmethionine at different molar ratios. At high Pt: methionine ratios, chelates with the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of the methionine are dominant; at lower Pt: methionine ratios, a bis-methionine product is formed. The en …

Three Dimensional Positron Annihilation Momentum Measurement Technique (3dpamm) Applied To Measure Oxygen-Atom Defects In 6h Silicon Carbide, Christopher S. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
A three-dimensional Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy System (3DPASS) capable to simultaneously measure three-dimensional electron-positron (e--e+) momentum densities measuring photons derived from e--e+ annihilation events was designed and characterized. 3DPASS simultaneously collects a single data set of correlated energies and positions for two coincident annihilation photons using solid-state double-sided strip detectors (DSSD). Positions of photons were determined using an interpolation method which measures a figure-of-merit proportional to the areas of transient charges induced on both charge collection strips directly adjacent to the charge collection strips interacting with the annihilation photons. The subpixel resolution was measured for both double-sided strip detectors (DSSD) and …

Optical Properties Of Si, Ge, Gaas, Gasb, Inas, And Inp At Elevated Temperatures, Thomas R. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Investigation of the optical and electrical behavior of some semiconductors at very high temperatures has not been an area of much study, at least not experimentally. The importance of such research becomes obvious due to the effects of high temperatures on semiconductor devices such as infrared detectors and light emitters. Besides the destructive effects of thermal stress and melting, changes in the optical properties of the material can greatly affect device performance. In this research, the infrared absorption of Si, Ge, GaAs, GaSb, InAs, and InP was measured from 0.6 to 25 μm at temperatures ranging from 295 up to …

Experimental Validation Techniques For The Heleeos Off-Axis Laser Propagation Model, John D. Haiducek
Theses and Dissertations
The High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS) off-axis scattering algorithm is designed to predict the irradiance that will be detected at a given off-axis location due to atmospheric scattering of a high-energy laser. The HELEEOS system models the propagation of the laser through the atmosphere, accounting for such effects as turbulence, thermal blooming, and atmospheric absorption. The HELEEOS off-axis scattering algorithm uses the scattering phase functions of the Mie scattering models to predict the amount of radiation that will be scattered toward a particular observation location from each point along the beam path, and the total irradiance that will …

Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao
Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation study is focused on (1) the application of an oxidation-induced sol-gel assembly method to formation of CdTe aerogels; (2) extension of existing aerogel compositions and properties by an alternative synthetic approach: cation-exchange reactions; and (3) probing the functionality of CdSe aerogels as optical sensors of Lewis base analytes.
Highly porous CdTe aerogels were successfully synthesized by sol-gel assembly of CdTe nanocrystals with thiolate or nonthiolate (phosphine oxide) ligated surfaces by treatment with tetranitromethane. Both phosphine oxide-capped and the thiolate-capped aerogels exhibit similar structure, morphology and porosimetry properties, suggesting that precursor ligation does not have a no major effect …

In the title compound, C(25)H(18)ClNO, the conformation about the C=C double bond is E. Significant twists are evident in the molecule, with the benzene ring forming a dihedral angle of 53.92 (11)degrees with the quinolinyl residue. Further, the chalcone residue is approximately perpendicular to the quinolinyl residue [C(q)-C(q)-C(c)-O(c) torsion angle = -104.5 (3)degrees, where q = quinolinyl and c = chalcone]. In the crystal, the presence of C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions leads to supramolecular layers lying parallel to ((1) over bar 02).
