Characterization And Quantification Of Ground Heat Flux For Late Season Shallow Snow, Aurele Lamontagne Jul 2009

Characterization And Quantification Of Ground Heat Flux For Late Season Shallow Snow, Aurele Lamontagne

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Increasing populations, rapid land use changes, and climate change in mountainous areas have stressed water resources and reduced available water from snowpacks. In anticipation of warmer temperatures, receding snowlines, and increasing water demands, water managers will need detailed snowmelt energy and water balance information from the margin as transitional snow replaces deeper snowpacks. Patchy shallow snow, found at transitional snow elevations, has a distinct energy balance that includes local advection and short wave radiation penetration of snow less than 10 cm deep. Solar penetration to the soil surface provides a heat source that can be absorbed by the soil and …

Uncertainty, Sensitivity And Geostatistical Studies Of Flow And Contaminant Transport In Heterogeneous Unsaturated Zone, Feng Pan May 2009

Uncertainty, Sensitivity And Geostatistical Studies Of Flow And Contaminant Transport In Heterogeneous Unsaturated Zone, Feng Pan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The objectives of this study are: (1) to develop a methodology of estimating probability density functions (PDFs) of unsaturated hydraulic parameters when field samples are sparse, (2) to evaluate the predictive uncertainties in flow and contaminant transport due to parameter uncertainties in the layer- and local-scale heterogeneities of hydraulic parameters in unsaturated zone (UZ), (3) to investigate the contributions of the parameter uncertainties to the flow and transport uncertainties, and (4) to estimate the spatial correlation structures of hydraulic parameters by incorporating prior information and site measurements.

At layer scale, the uncertainty assessment of flow and contaminant transport in UZ …

Low-Level Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In The Waters Of Michigan, Lisa M. Anderson Apr 2009

Low-Level Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In The Waters Of Michigan, Lisa M. Anderson

Dissertations

The results of this research are the product of a two year study funded by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality with monies from the Clean Michigan Initiative. Low-level (part per billion range) pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the waters of Michigan were investigated. Five rivers in the State were sampled; including the Clinton, Grand, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, and Saginaw. Groundwater samples were obtained from two shallow municipal water wells also; one on the Grand River and one on the Kalamazoo River. The wells were sampled to determine if PPCPs in the river water were being drawn in by …

The Effect Of Vegetated Roofs On Acid Precipitation Runoff, Jennifer Gillen Jan 2009

The Effect Of Vegetated Roofs On Acid Precipitation Runoff, Jennifer Gillen

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Vegetated, or “green” roofs are used in urban architecture and sustainable building to capture stormwater and enhance urban wildlife. Most research to date has focused on their water retention capabilities, but green roofs also have the potential to treat anthropogenic acid precipitation in urban environments. More specifically, green roofs could reduce sulfate, nitrate and hydrogen ion concentrations in runoff. One previous study has demonstrated that nitrate was reduced in water draining from a green roof (Berndtsson, et al. 2006), but this unpublished thesis appears to be the first comprehensive study of the effects of vegetated roof materials on major ions …

Two-Dimensional Gravity Modeling Of The Rattlesnake Springs Watershed, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, Nikolay D. Boykov Jan 2009

Two-Dimensional Gravity Modeling Of The Rattlesnake Springs Watershed, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, Nikolay D. Boykov

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A series of non-invasive geophysical investigations at the Rattlesnake Springs part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, were performed in an effort to better delineate the watershed of the springs. The goal of this project is to determine possible locations of fractures and faults that may control the distribution of groundwater that feeds Rattlesnake Springs. Once the water flow paths are identified, the park will be able to better protect Rattlesnake Springs from environmental hazards, such as oil and gas drilling, as well as from upstream water development. As part of this effort I conducted a precision gravity survey …

Nutrient Analysis Of The Estuarine And River Waters Of The Santa Margarita River Estuary, Barbara Elisabeth Long Jan 2009

Nutrient Analysis Of The Estuarine And River Waters Of The Santa Margarita River Estuary, Barbara Elisabeth Long

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project was to analyze nutrient concentrations in the estuarine and river waters of the Santa Margarita River Estuary located on United States Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton in northern San Diego County, north of Oceanside, California.

Observations Of The Transient Characteristics Of The Hydrological Balance, Matthew Czikowsky Jan 2009

Observations Of The Transient Characteristics Of The Hydrological Balance, Matthew Czikowsky

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The impact of transient input events on the hydrological balance components are studied over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. First, interception evaporation and energy-balance changes during and following precipitation events are examined at the site spatial and event temporal scale. Second, the hydrological response to spatial and seasonal changes in precipitation and evapotranspiration due to land cover changes are examined on the small-to-large watershed scale, covering the event to seasonal time scales.

In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate In Soil And Groundwater, David Christopher Bertolacci Jan 2009

In Situ Bioremediation Of Perchlorate In Soil And Groundwater, David Christopher Bertolacci

Theses Digitization Project

This project conducted a technology assessment for in-situ bioremediation of perchlorate in soil and groundwater and assessed the suitability of electon donor amendments.

Cyanide Analysis In Wastewater, Heather Marie Lutes Jan 2009

Cyanide Analysis In Wastewater, Heather Marie Lutes

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project was to look at and determine the methods that would best prevent the occurrence of false readings durring testing and analysis of cyanide in wastewater. This project was designed to help those wastewater treatment plants in the Santa Ana Watershed who are in the process of developing a uniform method that minimizes or eliminates interferences currently found. Eastern Municipal District, Inland Empire Utilities agency, Orange County Water District, San Bernardino Valley Municipal, Water District, and Western Municipal Water District all are members of the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority (SAWPA).
