The Construction Of Khovanov Homology, Shiaohan Liu Dec 2023

The Construction Of Khovanov Homology, Shiaohan Liu

Master's Theses

Knot theory is a rich topic in topology that studies the how circles can be embedded in Euclidean 3-space. One of the main questions in knot theory is how to distinguish between different types of knots efficiently. One way to approach this problem is to study knot invariants, which are properties of knots that do not change under a standard set of deformations. We give a brief overview of basic knot theory, and examine a specific knot invariant known as Khovanov homology. Khovanov homology is a homological invariant that refines the Jones polynomial, another knot invariant that assigns a Laurent …

Complex Dimensions Of 100 Different Sierpinski Carpet Modifications, Gregory Parker Leathrum Dec 2023

Complex Dimensions Of 100 Different Sierpinski Carpet Modifications, Gregory Parker Leathrum

Master's Theses

We used Dr. M. L. Lapidus's Fractal Zeta Functions to analyze the complex fractal dimensions of 100 different modifications of the Sierpinski Carpet fractal construction. We will showcase the theorems that made calculations easier, as well as Desmos tools that helped in classifying the different fractals and computing their complex dimensions. We will also showcase all 100 of the Sierpinski Carpet modifications and their complex dimensions.

An Exposition Of The Curvature Of Warped Product Manifolds, Angelina Bisson Dec 2023

An Exposition Of The Curvature Of Warped Product Manifolds, Angelina Bisson

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The field of differential geometry is brimming with compelling objects, among which are warped products. These objects hold a prominent place in differential geometry and have been widely studied, as is evident in the literature. Warped products are topologically the same as the Cartesian product of two manifolds, but with distances in one of the factors in skewed. Our goal is to introduce warped product manifolds and to compute their curvature at any point. We follow recent literature and present a previously known result that classifies all flat warped products to find that there are flat examples of warped products …

Aspects Of Stochastic Geometric Mechanics In Molecular Biophysics, David Frost Dec 2023

Aspects Of Stochastic Geometric Mechanics In Molecular Biophysics, David Frost

All Dissertations

In confocal single-molecule FRET experiments, the joint distribution of FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution can reveal underlying molecular conformational dynamics via deviation from their theoretical Forster relationship. This shift is referred to as a dynamic shift. In this study, we investigate the influence of the free energy landscape in protein conformational dynamics on the dynamic shift by simulation of the associated continuum reaction coordinate Langevin dynamics, yielding a deeper understanding of the dynamic and structural information in the joint FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution. We develop novel Langevin models for the dye linker dynamics, including rotational dynamics, based …

Intersection Cohomology Of Rank One Local Systems For Arrangement Schubert Varieties, Shuo Lin Nov 2023

Intersection Cohomology Of Rank One Local Systems For Arrangement Schubert Varieties, Shuo Lin

Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we study the intersection cohomology of arrangement Schubert varieties with coefficients in a rank one local system on a hyperplane arrangement complement. We prove that the intersection cohomology can be computed recursively in terms of certain polynomials, if a local system has only $\pm 1$ monodromies. In the case where the hyperplane arrangement is generic central or equivalently the associated matroid is uniform and the local system has only $\pm 1$ monodromies, we prove that the intersection cohomology is a combinatorial invariant. In particular when the hyperplane arrangement is associated to the uniform matroid of rank $n-1$ …

When To Hold And When To Fold: Studies On The Topology Of Origami And Linkages, Mary Elizabeth Lee Nov 2023

When To Hold And When To Fold: Studies On The Topology Of Origami And Linkages, Mary Elizabeth Lee

Doctoral Dissertations

Linkages and mechanisms are pervasive in physics and engineering as models for a
variety of structures and systems, from jamming to biomechanics. With the increase
in physical realizations of discrete shape-changing materials, such as metamaterials,
programmable materials, and self-actuating structures, an increased understanding
of mechanisms and how they can be designed is crucial. At a basic level, linkages
or mechanisms can be understood to be rigid bars connected at pivots around which
they can rotate freely. We will have a particular focus on origami-like materials, an
extension to linkages with the added constraint of faces. Self-actuated versions typ-
ically start …

Positive Factorizations Via Planar Mapping Classes And Braids, Richard E. Buckman Nov 2023

Positive Factorizations Via Planar Mapping Classes And Braids, Richard E. Buckman

Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we seek to better understand the planar mapping class group in
order to find factorizations of boundary multitwists, primarily to generate and study
symplectic Lefschetz pencils by lifting these factorizations. Traditionally this method
is applied to a disk or sphere with marked points, utilizing factorizations in the stan-
dard and spherical braid groups, whereas in our work we allow for multiple boundary components. Dehn twists along these boundaries give rise to exceptional sections of Lefschetz fibrations over the 2–sphere, equivalently, to Lefschetz pencils with base points. These methods are able to derive an array of known examples …

Exploring Topological Phonons In Different Length Scales: Microtubules And Acoustic Metamaterials, Ssu-Ying Chen Aug 2023

Exploring Topological Phonons In Different Length Scales: Microtubules And Acoustic Metamaterials, Ssu-Ying Chen

Dissertations

The topological concepts of electronic states have been extended to phononic systems, leading to the prediction of topological phonons in a variety of materials. These phonons play a crucial role in determining material properties such as thermal conductivity, thermoelectricity, superconductivity, and specific heat. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the role of topological phonons at different length scales.

Firstly, the acoustic resonator properties of tubulin proteins, which form microtubules, will be explored The microtubule has been proposed as an analog of a topological phononic insulator due to its unique properties. One key characteristic of topological materials is the …

Geometry In Spectral Triples: Immersions And Fermionic Fuzzy Geometries, Luuk S. Verhoeven Aug 2023

Geometry In Spectral Triples: Immersions And Fermionic Fuzzy Geometries, Luuk S. Verhoeven

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We investigate the metric nature of spectral triples in two ways.

Given an oriented Riemannian embedding i:X->Y of codimension 1 we construct a family of unbounded KK-cycles i!(epsilon), each of which represents the shriek class of i in KK-theory. These unbounded KK-cycles are further equipped with connections, allowing for the explicit computation of the products of i! with the spectral triple of Y at the unbounded level. In the limit epsilon to 0 the product of these unbounded KK-cycles with the canonical spectral triple for Y admits an asymptotic expansion. The divergent part of this expansion is known and …

Generating Polynomials Of Exponential Random Graphs, Mohabat Tarkeshian Aug 2023

Generating Polynomials Of Exponential Random Graphs, Mohabat Tarkeshian

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The theory of random graphs describes the interplay between probability and graph theory: it is the study of the stochastic process by which graphs form and evolve. In 1959, Erdős and Rényi defined the foundational model of random graphs on n vertices, denoted G(n, p) ([ER84]). Subsequently, Frank and Strauss (1986) added a Markov twist to this story by describing a topological structure on random graphs that encodes dependencies between local pairs of vertices ([FS86]). The general model that describes this framework is called the exponential random graph model (ERGM).

In the past, determining when a probability distribution has strong …

The G_2-Hitchin Component Of Triangle Groups: Dimension And Integer Points, Hannah E. Downs Aug 2023

The G_2-Hitchin Component Of Triangle Groups: Dimension And Integer Points, Hannah E. Downs

Doctoral Dissertations

The image of $\PSL(2,\reals)$ under the irreducible representation into $\PSL(7,\reals)$ is contained in the split real form $G_{2}^{4,3}$ of the exceptional Lie group $G_{2}$. This irreducible representation therefore gives a representation $\rho$ of a hyperbolic triangle group $\Gamma(p,q,r)$ into $G_{2}^{4,3}$, and the \textit{Hitchin component} of the representation variety $\Hom(\Gamma(p,q,r),G_{2}^{4,3})$ is the component of $\Hom(\Gamma(p,q,r),G_{2}^{4,3})$ containing $\rho$.

This thesis is in two parts: (i) we give a simple, elementary proof of a formula for the dimension of this Hitchin component, this formula having been obtained earlier in [Alessandrini et al.], \citep{Alessandrini2023}, as part of a wider investigation using Higgs bundle techniques, …

Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells Aug 2023

Stability Of Cauchy's Equation On Δ+., Holden Wells

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The most famous functional equation f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y) known as Cauchy's equation due to its appearance in the seminal analysis text Cours d'Analyse (Cauchy 1821), was used to understand fundamental aspects of the real numbers and the importance of regularity assumptions in mathematical analysis. Since then, the equation has been abstracted and examined in many contexts. One such examination, introduced by Stanislaw Ulam and furthered by Donald Hyers, was that of stability. Hyers demonstrated that Cauchy's equation exhibited stability over Banach Spaces in the following sense: functions that approximately satisfy Cauchy's equation are approximated with the same level of error by functions …

Topological Data Analysis Of Convolutional Neural Networks Using Depthwise Separable Convolutions, Eliot Courtois Jul 2023

Topological Data Analysis Of Convolutional Neural Networks Using Depthwise Separable Convolutions, Eliot Courtois

Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present our contribution to a growing body of work combining the fields of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) and machine learning. The object of our analysis is the Convolutional Neural Network, or CNN, a predictive model with a large number of parameters organized using a grid-like geometry. This geometry is engineered to resemble patches of pixels in an image, and thus CNNs are a conventional choice for an image-classifying model.

CNNs belong to a larger class of neural network models, which, starting at a random initialization state, undergo a gradual fitting (or training) process, often a …

Internal Yoneda Ext Groups, Central H-Spaces, And Banded Types, Jarl Gunnar Taxerås Flaten Jun 2023

Internal Yoneda Ext Groups, Central H-Spaces, And Banded Types, Jarl Gunnar Taxerås Flaten

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We develop topics in synthetic homotopy theory using the language of homotopy type theory, and study their semantic counterparts in an ∞-topos. Specifically, we study Grothendieck categories and Yoneda Ext groups in this setting, as well as a novel class of central H-spaces along with their associated bands. The former are fundamental notions from homological algebra that support important computations in traditional homotopy theory. We develop these tools with the goal of supporting similar computations in our setting. In contrast, our results about central H-spaces and bands are new, even when interpreted into the ∞-topos of spaces.

Jones Polynomial Obstructions For Positivity Of Knots, Lizzie Buchanan Jun 2023

Jones Polynomial Obstructions For Positivity Of Knots, Lizzie Buchanan

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The fundamental problem in knot theory is distinguishing one knot from another. We accomplish this by looking at knot invariants. One such invariant is positivity. A knot is positive if it has a diagram in which all crossings are positive. A knot is almost-positive if it does not have a diagram where all crossings are positive, but it does have a diagram in which all but one crossings are positive. Given a knot with an almost-positive diagram, it is in general very hard to determine whether it might also have a positive diagram. This work provides positivity obstructions for three …

Groups Of Non Positive Curvature And The Word Problem, Zoe Nepsa Jun 2023

Groups Of Non Positive Curvature And The Word Problem, Zoe Nepsa

Master's Theses

Given a group $\Gamma$ with presentation $\relgroup{\scr{\scr{A}}}{\scr{R}}$, a natural question, known as the word problem, is how does one decide whether or not two words in the free group, $F(\scr{\scr{A}})$, represent the same element in $\Gamma$. In this thesis, we study certain aspects of geometric group theory, especially ideas published by Gromov in the late 1980's. We show there exists a quasi-isometry between the group equipped with the word metric, and the space it acts on. Then, we develop the notion of a CAT(0) space and study groups which act properly and cocompactly by isometries on these spaces, such groups …

Quantifying Separability In Limit Groups, Keino Brown Jun 2023

Quantifying Separability In Limit Groups, Keino Brown

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We show that for any finitely generated non-abelian subgroup H of a limit group L, there exists a finite-index subgroup K which is fully residually H. This generalizes the result of Wilton that limit groups admit local retractions. We also show that for any finitely generated subgroup of a limit group, there is a finite-dimensional representation of the limit group which separates the subgroup in the induced Zariski topology. As a corollary, we establish a polynomial upper bound on the size of the quotients used to separate a finitely generated subgroup in a limit group. This generalizes results of Louder, …

An Explicit Construction Of Sheaves In Context, Tyler A. Bryson Jun 2023

An Explicit Construction Of Sheaves In Context, Tyler A. Bryson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This document details the body of theory necessary to explicitly construct sheaves of sets on a site together with the development of supporting material necessary to connect sheaf theory with the wider mathematical contexts in which it is applied. Of particular interest is a novel presentation of the plus construction suitable for direct application to a site without first passing to the generated grothendieck topology.

Pairings In A Ring Spectrum-Based Bousfield-Kan Spectral Sequence, Jonathan Toledo Jun 2023

Pairings In A Ring Spectrum-Based Bousfield-Kan Spectral Sequence, Jonathan Toledo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Bousfield and Kan traditionally formulated their homotopy spectral sequence over a simplicial set X resolved with respect to a ring R. By considering an adequate category of ring spectra, one can take a ring spectrum E, create from it a functor of a triple on the category of simplicial sets, and build a cosimplicial simplicial set EX. The homotopy spectral sequence can then be formed over such cosimplicial spaces by a similar construction to the original. Pairings can be established on these spectral sequences, and, for nice enough spaces, these pairings on the E2-terms coincide with certain …

Effective Non-Hermiticity And Topology In Markovian Quadratic Bosonic Dynamics, Vincent Paul Flynn May 2023

Effective Non-Hermiticity And Topology In Markovian Quadratic Bosonic Dynamics, Vincent Paul Flynn

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Recently, there has been an explosion of interest in re-imagining many-body quantum phenomena beyond equilibrium. One such effort has extended the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase classification of non-interacting fermions to driven and dissipative settings, uncovering novel topological phenomena that are not known to exist in equilibrium which may have wide-ranging applications in quantum science. Similar physics in non-interacting bosonic systems has remained elusive. Even at equilibrium, an "effective non-Hermiticity" intrinsic to bosonic Hamiltonians poses theoretical challenges. While this non-Hermiticity has been acknowledged, its implications have not been explored in-depth. Beyond this dynamical peculiarity, major roadblocks have arisen in the search …

Restrictions On Topological Symmetry Groups Of The 3-Rung Möbius Ladder On The Torus, Logan Willhoite May 2023

Restrictions On Topological Symmetry Groups Of The 3-Rung Möbius Ladder On The Torus, Logan Willhoite

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we discuss properties of the 3-rung Möbius ladder embedded on the surface of a torus. We present proofs on restrictions of topological symmetry groups of the Möbius ladder with and without the assumption of preserving orientation. Specifically, we show that Z2 is the only possible non-trivial orientation-preserving topological symmetry groups, and also that Z2 and D2 are the only possible nontrivial topological symmetry groups.

Framing How We Think About Curves, Megan Sattler May 2023

Framing How We Think About Curves, Megan Sattler

Mathematical Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

A frame defines a basis at a point in R^n, and we can frame a curve by placing one at every point along it. This thesis investigates adapted framed curves in R^2 and R^3 in which they are used to provide information about how a curve twists and turns. We derive differential information from the frames that describe how they change and consequently how the curve changes. We also deduce special properties of each framing and discuss how the differential information suffices to describe the shape of curves.

Roots Of Quaternionic Polynomials And Automorphisms Of Roots, Olalekan Ogunmefun May 2023

Roots Of Quaternionic Polynomials And Automorphisms Of Roots, Olalekan Ogunmefun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quaternions are an extension of the complex numbers which were first described by Sir William Rowan Hamilton in 1843. In his description, he gave the equation of the multiplication of the imaginary component similar to that of complex numbers. Many mathematicians have studied the zeros of quaternionic polynomials. Prominent of these, Ivan Niven pioneered a root-finding algorithm in 1941, Gentili and Struppa proved the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA) for quaternions in 2007. This thesis finds the zeros of quaternionic polynomials using the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. There are isolated zeros and spheres of zeros. In this thesis, we …

Knot Equivalence, Jacob Trubey May 2023

Knot Equivalence, Jacob Trubey

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A knot is a closed curve in R3. Alternatively, we say that a knot is an embedding f : S1 → R3 of a circle into R3. Analogously, one can think of a knot as a segment of string in a three-dimensional space that has been knotted together in some way, with the ends of the string then joined together to form a knotted loop. A link is a collection of knots that have been linked together.

An important question in the mathematical study of knot theory is that of how we can tell when two knots are, or are …

Automorphisms Of A Generalized Quadrangle Of Order 6, Ryan Pesak May 2023

Automorphisms Of A Generalized Quadrangle Of Order 6, Ryan Pesak

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this thesis, we study the symmetries of the putative generalized quadrangle of order 6. Although it is unknown whether such a quadrangle Q can exist, we show that if it does, that Q cannot be transitive on either points or lines. We first cover the background necessary for studying this problem. Namely, the theory of groups and group actions, the theory of generalized quadrangles, and automorphisms of GQs. We then prove that a generalized quadrangle Q of order 6 cannot have a point- or line-transitive automorphism group, and we also prove that if a group G acts faithfully on …

The Sharp Bounds Of A Quasi-Isometry Of P-Adic Numbers In A Subset Real Plane, Kathleen Zopff Apr 2023

The Sharp Bounds Of A Quasi-Isometry Of P-Adic Numbers In A Subset Real Plane, Kathleen Zopff

Undergraduate Theses

P-adic numbers are numbers valued by their divisibility by high powers of some prime, p. These numbers are an important concept in number theory that are used in major ideas such as the Reimann Hypothesis and Andrew Wiles’ proof of Fermat’s last theorem, and also have applications in cryptography. In this project, we will explore various visualizations of p-adic numbers. In particular, we will look at a mapping of p-adic numbers into the real plane which constructs a fractal similar to a Sierpinski p-gon. We discuss the properties of this map and give formulas for the sharp bounds of its …

A Discrete Morse Approach For Computing Homotopy Types: An Exploration Of The Morse, Generalized Morse, Matching, And Independence Complexes, Connor Donovan Apr 2023

A Discrete Morse Approach For Computing Homotopy Types: An Exploration Of The Morse, Generalized Morse, Matching, And Independence Complexes, Connor Donovan

Mathematics Honors Papers

In this thesis, we study possible homotopy types of four families of simplicial complexes–the Morse complex, the generalized Morse complex, the matching complex, and the independence complex–using discrete Morse theory. Given a simplicial complex, K, we can construct its Morse complex from all possible discrete gradient vector fields on K. A similar construction will allow us to build the generalized Morse complex while considering edges and vertices will allow us to construct the matching complex and independence complex. In Chapter 3, we use the Cluster Lemma and the notion of star clusters to apply matchings to families of Morse, generalized …

Topological Data Analysis Of Weight Spaces In Convolutional Neural Networks, Adam Wagenknecht Apr 2023

Topological Data Analysis Of Weight Spaces In Convolutional Neural Networks, Adam Wagenknecht

Dissertations

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become one of the most commonly used tools for performing image classification. Unfortunately, as with most machine learning algorithms, CNNs suffer from a lack of interpretability. CNNs are trained by using a training data set and a loss function to tune a set of parameters known as the layer weights. This tuning process is based on the classical method of gradient descent, but it relies on a strong stochastic component, which makes the weight behavior during training difficult to understand. However, since CNNs are governed largely by the weights that make up each of the …

A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson Feb 2023

A Stronger Strong Schottky Lemma For Euclidean Buildings, Michael E. Ferguson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We provide a criterion for two hyperbolic isometries of a Euclidean building to generate a free group of rank two. In particular, we extend the application of a Strong Schottky Lemma to buildings given by Alperin, Farb and Noskov. We then use this extension to obtain an infinite family of matrices that generate a free group of rank two. In doing so, we also introduce an algorithm that terminates in finite time if the lemma is applicable for pairs of certain kinds of matrices acting on the Euclidean building for the special linear group over certain discretely valued fields.

Spectral Sequences And Khovanov Homology, Zachary J. Winkeler Jan 2023

Spectral Sequences And Khovanov Homology, Zachary J. Winkeler

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

In this thesis, we will focus on two main topics; the common thread between both will be the existence of spectral sequences relating Khovanov homology to other knot invariants. Our first topic is an invariant MKh(L) for links in thickened disks with multiple punctures. This invariant is different from but inspired by both the Asaeda-Pryzytycki-Sikora (APS) homology and its specialization to links in the solid torus. Our theory will be constructed from a Z^n-filtration on the Khovanov complex, and as a result we will get various spectral sequences relating MKh(L) to Kh(L), AKh(L), and APS(L). Our …
