Local Environmental Controls On Sulfur Isotope Ratios In Marine Sedimentary Iron Sulfide Minerals, Roger Nicholas Bryant May 2019

Local Environmental Controls On Sulfur Isotope Ratios In Marine Sedimentary Iron Sulfide Minerals, Roger Nicholas Bryant

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The controls on the bulk sulfur isotopic composition of marine sedimentary iron sulfides (often referred to simply as pyrite; δ34Spyr) are poorly understood. Nevertheless, many have employed δ34Spyr in efforts to reconstruct the past operation of the biogeochemical sulfur cycle, from the planetary scale down to individual microbial metabolisms. This practice has been thrown into doubt by a growing body of evidence that suggests δ34Spyr is strongly controlled by local environmental conditions. This dissertation describes efforts to determine the mechanisms responsible for the link between local environmental conditions and δ34Spyr. In order to do this, we developed novel laboratory procedures …

Precipitation And Transformation Of Iron-Sulfide Nanoparticles In Low-Temperature Aqueous Environment: Effects Of Reactant Iron And Sulfide Sources, Ezequiel A. Moreno Flores Jan 2019

Precipitation And Transformation Of Iron-Sulfide Nanoparticles In Low-Temperature Aqueous Environment: Effects Of Reactant Iron And Sulfide Sources, Ezequiel A. Moreno Flores

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Iron sulfide nanoparticles assume an important role within a wide range of geological settings as indicators of redox environmental conditions and elemental cycling mechanisms. Initial precipitates of iron sulfide are exclusively nanoscale sized in low temperature aqueous conditions and have been reported to go through diverse morphological and phase transformations, possibly leading to the ultimate deposits of pyrite in geologic records of various times. A systematic understanding of how the early-stage nanoparticles of iron sulfide may develop into more crystalline iron sulfide forms is still lacking however. The major goal for this study was to illuminate the effects of the …

Primary Pristine And Altered Iron Sulfides In Cm And Cr Carbonaceous Chondrites: Insights Into Nebular And Parent Body Processes, Sheryl A. Singerling Feb 2018

Primary Pristine And Altered Iron Sulfides In Cm And Cr Carbonaceous Chondrites: Insights Into Nebular And Parent Body Processes, Sheryl A. Singerling

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This work presents our detailed investigation of textures and major, minor, and trace element compositions of iron sulfides in CM and CR carbonaceous chondrites using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) from focused ion beam-prepared (FIB) sections, and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) microanalysis. This study represents the first attempt to link micro- to nano-scale textural and chemical characteristics of CM and CR chondrite primary iron sulfides and their alteration products.

The objectives of our studies included determining: 1) if primary sulfides are present in the least-altered CM and CR chondrites, and if so, 2) …
