Non-technical summary. The United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) articulate societal aspirations for people and our planet. Many scientists have criticised the SDGs and some have suggested that a better understanding of the complex interactions between society and the environment should underpin the next global development agenda. We further this discussion through the theory of social–ecological resilience, which emphasises the ability of systems to absorb, adapt, and transform in the face of change. We determine the strengths of the current SDGs, which should form a basis for the next agenda, and identify key gaps that should be filled.

This study examines the e-waste stream in urban Arusha, answer the questions of where electronics go, how people usually dispose of them, if people are aware of the impacts of e-waste, and what next steps are necessary. The study took place in November 2019 in urban Arusha, Tanzania. Through snowball and convenience sampling in 4 quotas (community members, electricians, business members, and a policy maker), the study finds that there is no place for the proper disposal of e-waste in Arusha. Many electronics are disposed of improperly by being put into the landfill or burned. Most participants were unaware of …

Demand for water from rivers and aquifers for consumptive use has grown greatly due to population and economic growth and changing lifestyle and dietary habits. Consequently, aquatic ecosystems, especially in semi-arid and arid regions across the world, suffer adverse environmental impacts of over-extraction. Historically, Alberta’s water allocation system has been based on the first-in-time-first-in-right (FITFIR) system, granting the preference to the licensees based on the seniority of their licenses. In recent years, scientists, policy makers, and water users have raised questions whether FITFIR will continue to be the most appropriate allocation system to manage increasing scarce water resources in Alberta. …

The practice of releasing hatchery-reared fish into existing populations to augment fishing (stock enhancement) or restore depleted spawning biomass (restocking) has occurred around the world for decades with varying degrees of success. The underpinning concept is to produce and release fish into wild populations to increase their abundance, catch rates and/or fishery yields

If restocking and stock enhancement activities are to be successful, they should have clear objectives and be well planned and targeted at situations where there is a reasonable expectation of having a beneficial effect.

Habitat enhancement structures range widely in design. They generally aim to enhance fish habitat by providing a structure for fish and other aquatic life to colonise and potentially lead to an increase in their biological production.

As part of its commitment, the Department has developed this new Abalone Aquaculture Policy (“Policy”) to outline new arrangements for the management of the abalone aquaculture industry in the State.

The first policy on abalone aquaculture was released 10 years ago and in November 2009, the Department convened a stakeholder meeting with the abalone industry (the wild capture and aquaculture sectors) to discuss policy changes that would support the abalone aquaculture industry in Western Australia. This paper explains how zero bird-strike rate can be achieved by any aerodrome by constant efforts and perseverance of a dedicated team as evidenced from the author’s experience on about 30 aerodromes in India. This paper stresses the importance of conducting survey of problem aerodromes every five years by an expert (Satheesan 1996c), necessity for employing an Ornithologist at every aerodrome, need for regular national-level training for bird-controllers (Satheesan, in press - b) and urgency for setting up Bird-strike Prevention Committees at national (interministerial) and airport levels.
