Antioxidant supplementation decreases postexercise oxidative stress but could also decrease muscle pro- tein synthesis. This study compared the effects of three diets: low antioxidant (control, CON), high an- tioxidant (AO), and branched-chain amino acid high antioxidant (BCAO) supplementation on postexercise protein synthesis and oxidative stress. We hypothesized that supplementing antioxidants with branched- chain amino acids(BCAA) would reduce oxidative stress without hindering muscle protein synthesis. Eigh- teen mixed-breed polo horses (11 mares and 7 geldings, with age range between 5 and 18 years, were on CON diet for 30 days (from day -45 until day 0) and then were assigned to …

Effects Of Temperature And Antioxidants On The Oxidation Of Biodiesel Derived From Waste Vegetable Oil, Randy L. Maglinao, Torrey J. Wagner, Keegan Duff Jun 2020

Effects Of Temperature And Antioxidants On The Oxidation Of Biodiesel Derived From Waste Vegetable Oil, Randy L. Maglinao, Torrey J. Wagner, Keegan Duff

Faculty Publications

Biodiesel offers several environmental benefits and improvements to some fuel performance properties, but its poor oxidative stability has been a major concern. Currently, the accepted practice to improve biodiesel oxidative stability is the addition of antioxidants; numerous antioxidants have been studied but their effectiveness in inhibiting biodiesel oxidation is difficult to predict due to variation with resonance stability, solubility, reactivity, and volatility. To improve prediction efforts, this study explored the Rapid Small-Scale Oxidation Test (RSSOT) as a means to investigate how biodiesel oxidation is affected by antioxidant concentration and temperature, and compared its results with the oxidative stability index test. …

Phytochemical Screening, Elemental Composition And In Vitro Antioxidant Assessment Of Selected Uae Medicinal Plants, Amina Mukhtar Dirir May 2018

Phytochemical Screening, Elemental Composition And In Vitro Antioxidant Assessment Of Selected Uae Medicinal Plants, Amina Mukhtar Dirir

Biology Theses

Medicinal herbs have been used since prehistoric times to alleviate pain and to treat many different diseases. In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in natural product research, particularly on herbal plants and their bioactive constituents. The resurgence of interest in medicinal plants is primarily attributed to the inefficacy of synthetic medicines in combating many diseases as well as to their toxic and side effects. The flora of the UAE is rich with various medicinal plants that were utilized by the indigenous people for different therapeutic purposes. Unfortunately, there are still gaps of knowledge, research and development on …

The Potential Antioxidant And Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Date Seed Powder In Rats, Fatima Theyab Saif Amer Ai Meqbaali Nov 2016

The Potential Antioxidant And Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Date Seed Powder In Rats, Fatima Theyab Saif Amer Ai Meqbaali

Theses

Chronic diseases are among the main leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Oxidative stress (defined as an imbalance in the reactive oxygen species production/degradation ratio) in interaction with inflammation, has been highlighted as one major underlying mechanism in the development of these diseases. Due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, polyphenols could prevent the development of chronic diseases. Interestingly, date seeds are particularly rich in such compounds. Nonetheless, an in vivo study aiming at studying and understanding antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of date seeds in serum and various organs is missing. Therefore, the present …

Air Blasting As The Optimal Approach For The Extraction Of Antioxidants In Coral Tissue, Elisabeth Deschaseaux, Myrna Deseo, Kellie Shepherd, Graham Jones, Peter Harrison Oct 2013

Air Blasting As The Optimal Approach For The Extraction Of Antioxidants In Coral Tissue, Elisabeth Deschaseaux, Myrna Deseo, Kellie Shepherd, Graham Jones, Peter Harrison

Dr Myrna A Deseo

In order to accurately measure the antioxidant capacity in corals, it is essential to optimally extract antioxidants from coral tissue. Here, we compared the two most commonly used methods for coral tissue extraction, air blasting (similar to Water-Pik method) and grinding, with or without sonication, to optimally extract antioxidants in corals. By air blasting, the coral tissue was stripped off the skeleton with a stream of compressed air into a polyethylene bag containing a known volume of buffer, whereas by grinding, both the coral tissue and skeleton were crushed using a mortar and pestle into a powder and homogenised in …
