A Survey Of Source And Finished Water Supplies For Giardia Cysts And Cryptosporidium Oocysts, Lisa Martin Sexton
KWRRI Research Reports
The occurrence of Giardia lamblia cysts and Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts was determined from source and treated drinking water supplies at selected water treatment facilities in Eastern Kentucky. Giardia and Cryptosporidium are two human protozoan parasites often found in water supplies due to fecal contamination. Characteristic cysts and oocysts were identified from large volume water samples, typically 100 gallons for raw samples and 1,000 gallons for finished water, using an indirect fluorescent antibody specific for Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Source water from four different water treatment facilities utilizing a reservoir, river, and two creeks were assayed. All sites exhibited Giardia lamblia …

Seedling Emergence And Growth Of Mangrove Avicennia Marina (Forssk.) Vierh. Under Different Environmental Conditions In The United Arab Emirates, Abdulrazzaq Abdulla Abdulla Anwahi
Theses
Seedling emergence, survival and growth of gray mangrove Avicennia marina (Forssk.) vierh. were studied in relation to different environmental factors through a series of experiments conducted at indoor low temperature, outdoor shaded and field areas at the Marine Resources Research Center, Umm Al Qaiwain. No emergence occurred when seeds were sowed in salinities equal to or higher than 60 ppt. Seedling survival rate decreased with increasing salinity at both indoor and outdoor experimental sites . Faster seedling growth rates were observed under outdoor shaded conditions than under indoor low temperatures. Results of field studies on a sloping beach indicated that …
The Pollution Effects Of Pleasure/Work Boat Sewage Discharges On Fecal Contamination Levels Of Waters In And Around Marinas And Other Places Where Boats Are Moored On The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, George H. Bangs
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
Contamination of seafood harvested from and recreational areas of the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries and the Atlantic coast inshore waters may cause health problems for people consuming the seafood or coming in contact with the waters by swimming, water skiing, or other water sports. These health problems include, but not limited to, dysentery, typhoid and hepatitis (Natchez, 1990). This is a preliminary study into the level of fecal pollution generated by sewage discharges from boats in marinas and other places where boats are moored on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Sites selected for the study included; (I) marinas and other …

A Comparison Of Plotless Density Estimators Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Richard M. Engeman, Robert T. Sugihara, Larry F. Pank, William E. Dusenberry
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We conducted an extensive simulation study to compare the performance of a large group of plotless density estimators (PDEs) to obtain clarification of their relative performance in a diversity of sampling situations. The PDEs studied included well-known ones from the literature plus some extensions and modifications introduced here. The simulations cover 96 combinations of 6 spatial patterns, 4 sample sizes, and 4 population densities. We made comparisons within classes of similar estimators, and we indicate the best-performing PDEs out of the complete set studied. Over all spatial patterns, the angle-order estimator with measurements to the third closest individual in each …

Drip Irrigation, An Adaptive Strategy, Heather A. Grant Digeorge
Drip Irrigation, An Adaptive Strategy, Heather A. Grant Digeorge
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Adaptation has always played a role in the survival of man. In today's Southwest we are quickly approaching a water shortage. Agriculture is the second largest user of water. One way to save water is by conservation. Drip irrigation would save vast amounts of water currently lost to inefficiency. Drip irrigation will become an option in the adaptation in agriculture.

Using Biodiversity Data To Assess Species--Habitat Relationships In Glacier National Park, Montana, Diane M. Debinski, Peter F. Brussard
Diane M. Debinski
Biodiversity surveys are becoming increasingly popular. However, standard analysis techniques for these data have not yet been developed. This paper explores the use of multivariate ordination techniques for assessing species—habitat relationships using biodiversity data. The research was conducted in Glacier National Park, Montana, and birds and butterflies were chosen as the taxonomic groups of study. Biodiversity assessment sites were established throughout a range of habitats and monitored from 1987 through 1989. Presence/absence sampling over the total number of sampling sites was used to classify species commonness and rarity. Approximately 86% of the historically recorded butterflies and 70% of the historically …
Interaction Of A Group Of Dislocations Within The Framework Of The Continuum Frenkel-Kontorova Model, Naum I. Gershenzon
Interaction Of A Group Of Dislocations Within The Framework Of The Continuum Frenkel-Kontorova Model, Naum I. Gershenzon
Physics Faculty Publications
The Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model of edge dislocation is analyzed. Solutions of the continuum limit of the FK model [the sine-Gordon (SG) equation] are obtained in a form convenient for investigation of dynamics of a large number of interacting dislocations. We consider, based on these solutions, some nonstationary processes: dislocation generation, diffusion of dislocations, and crack-dislocation interaction. Simple relations connecting the velocity of plastic deformation, density and velocity of dislocations, and the force of interaction between dislocations are obtained. The nucleation of dislocations at a moving crack tip is described.
