Controls On Plastic Debris Capture In Urban Stormwater Drains Of London, Canada: A Study Within The Great Lakes Watershed, Nina Kozikowski

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Land-based sources are the greatest contributors of plastic pollution in aquatic environments. Prior to this investigation, there were no available studies concerning the number and types of plastic debris items between 1 mm and 5 mm captured in urban stormwater drains. The present study examined macroplastic (>5 mm) and large microplastic (1-5 mm) debris that accumulated in LittaTrapTM devices at six drain sites over four seasonal periods in London, Ontario, Canada. Macroplastics (MaPs) and microplastics (MPs) were found in all 36 samples, and the totals ranged from 5-158 MaPs and 18-359 MPs per trap. Out of the 118 …

Assessing The Spatio-Temporal Behaviours Of Incomplete Surface Temperatures Using Thermal Remote Sensing And Gis, Derrick Kessie

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study aimed to better understand the spatiotemporal behaviors of "incomplete" surface temperatures, a subset of all the active surfaces in urban areas, that are relevant for outdoor thermal comfort assessments. This study answered the following questions: 1. What is the temperature of "incomplete surfaces" that are most relevant in urban thermal comfort assessments, and what is its spatiotemporal behavior in different urban neighborhoods? 2. How are the relevant incomplete temperatures related to nadir view remotely sensed surface temperatures (Tplan)? By combining distributions of wall temperatures from TUF-3D, an urban energy balance model, and horizontal surface temperatures from airborne remotely …

Subsurface Correlation Of Lower Silurian Medina Group, Southwestern Ontario, Rhys H. Paterson Oct 2022

Subsurface Correlation Of Lower Silurian Medina Group, Southwestern Ontario, Rhys H. Paterson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Medina Group succession in southwestern Ontario includes, in ascending order: the Whirlpool, Manitoulin, Cabot Head, Power Glen, Devils Hole-Balls Falls, Grimsby, and Thorold formations. Subsurface mapping in central and eastern Lake Erie has resulted in the recognition of three stratigraphic packages within the Medina Group based upon the integration of sedimentologic, stratigraphic and geophysical borehole logs. The interplay between changing paleoenvironments, sediment provenance, and regional tectonics and associated sea level fluctuations has resulted in the accumulation of a complex mosaic of mixed siliciclastics and carbonates. Manitoulin Formation carbonates and Whirlpool Formation siliciclastics display consistent thicknesses across the study area. …

An Assessment Of The Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Microplastics In Surface And Subsurface Sediment Of Lake Huron, North America, Sara L. Belontz Apr 2021

An Assessment Of The Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Microplastics In Surface And Subsurface Sediment Of Lake Huron, North America, Sara L. Belontz

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The awareness of and the data on the prevalence of microplastic (plastic particles <5mm) pollution in freshwater environments is rapidly increasing, as low-degrading polymers are being detected in various environmental matrices of the Laurentian Great Lakes. However, the accumulation, distribution and deposition of microplastics in offshore depositional environments of the Great Lakes, and particularly Lake Huron, is relatively unknown. In this study, benthic sediment from various Lake Huron waterbodies (main basin, Georgian Bay, the North Channel, and Saginaw Bay) was quantified for microplastic particles (fibres, fragments, films, and beads). The North Channel contained the greatest microplastic abundances, averaging 47,398 particles per kg-1 dry weight sediment (p kg-1 dw), followed by Georgian Bay (21,390 p kg-1 dw), the main basin (15,910 p kg-1 dw) and Saginaw Bay (1,592 p kg-1 dw). The results suggest that microplastic abundances in offshore settings are positively correlated with increasing water depth (p=0.004) and are controlled by lake bottom geomorphology. Hydrodynamic processes are a prevailing force driving microplastic dispersion and deposition into the offshore, in contrast to source-based drivers closer to the shoreline. Sediment cores were examined from …

Plastic Debris In The Laurentian Great Lakes System, North America: Analysis Of Types, Abundances, And Sources, Ian A. Arturo Feb 2021

Plastic Debris In The Laurentian Great Lakes System, North America: Analysis Of Types, Abundances, And Sources, Ian A. Arturo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Understanding plastic pollution in the Laurentian Great Lakes system requires investigation of all plastic debris sizes and categories. Visible polymeric debris (VPD) mainly characterize shorelines, and microplastics (MPs;mm) are found in benthic and beach sediment. Field sampling of VPD from all five Great Lakes, visual and chemical identification of VPD types, and implementation of a matrix scoring technique (MST) indicate that plastic industries, urban areas, and shoreline recreation are major sources of VPD. Sampling for MPs in the St. Clair system, followed by preliminary density separation, and microscopy, suggest that wastewater treatment plants are a major source. This work is …

Statistical Methods With A Focus On Joint Outcome Modeling And On Methods For Fire Science, Da Zhong Xi Nov 2020

Statistical Methods With A Focus On Joint Outcome Modeling And On Methods For Fire Science, Da Zhong Xi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Understanding the dynamics of wildfires contributes significantly to the development of fire science. Challenges in the analysis of historical fire data include defining fire dynamics within existing statistical frameworks, modeling the duration and size of fires as joint outcomes, identifying the how fires are grouped into clusters of subpopulations, and assessing the effect of environmental variables in different modeling frameworks. We develop novel statistical methods to consider outcomes related to fire science jointly. These methods address these challenges by linking univariate models for separate outcomes through shared random effects, an approach referred to as joint modeling. Comparisons with existing …

A Periglacial Landsystem Analysis In The Canadian High Arctic: A Tool For Planetary Geomorphology, Chimira Nicole Andres Oct 2020

A Periglacial Landsystem Analysis In The Canadian High Arctic: A Tool For Planetary Geomorphology, Chimira Nicole Andres

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Permafrost underlies 50% of Canada’s terrain and underlies 24% of the Earth’s total land area. It is a major driving force in the generation and evolution of patterned ground landforms such as polygons, stone circles, mud boils, and stripes, etc. that are seen on both the surface of the Earth and Mars, specifically in periglacial domains. The distribution of subsurface ice in these landforms (i.e. polygonal terrain) on Earth is a key constraint on past climate and process-form relationships in high arctic and periglacial regions. These landforms also have the potential of storing ice in the subsurface meaning that the …

Condition And Function Of Red River Valley Streams Receiving Nutrients From Human Activities In Manitoba, Canada, Kristin J. Painter Oct 2020

Condition And Function Of Red River Valley Streams Receiving Nutrients From Human Activities In Manitoba, Canada, Kristin J. Painter

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Small tributary streams are conduits between the landscape and larger waterbodies and provide important ecosystem services including assimilation of nutrients from human activities which may be protective of downstream waterbodies. In the Red River Valley (RRV), Manitoba, numerous nutrient sources including agricultural runoff, livestock manure, and municipal wastewater effluent, have been attributed to the eutrophication of Lake Winnipeg and thus require targeted management to prevent loss of nutrients from land to lake. However, linkages between land-based nutrient-producing human activities in the RRV and the ecological status of the tributaries remain poorly understood. Furthermore, the proportional contribution of each source of …

Understanding The Support For Municipal Green Bin Programs, Oluwatomilola Ladele Aug 2020

Understanding The Support For Municipal Green Bin Programs, Oluwatomilola Ladele

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As food waste increases globally, many cities have implemented curbside collection of food waste (aka green bin programs) to divert food waste from landfills. However, not all municipalities in Ontario have green bin programs. A factor responsible for the adoption of green bin programs is the community support for the program. The study results are based on 407 completed surveys from randomly selected households in London, Ontario (a municipality without a green bin program) and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario (a municipality with a green bin program). Surveys were used to collect data to understand: i) the predictors of household green bin support …

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Nutrients In The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin: Implications For Primary Production In Stream Ecosystems, Nolan Pearce Aug 2020

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Nutrients In The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin: Implications For Primary Production In Stream Ecosystems, Nolan Pearce

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Growing human populations and associated land use activities has increased the amount of nutrients delivered to surface waters. Eutrophication from the over-enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus has degraded ecosystem conditions in streams, lakes, and coastal areas worldwide. Thus, the management of anthropogenic nutrient loading is a global concern. This thesis employed a combination of field and experimental research to provide watershed managers with information on the spatial and temporal patterns in stream nutrient enrichment, and the associated ecological effects of anthropogenic nutrient loading in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin. Four studies were completed to address this research goal. First, I …

Airborne Observations Of Thermal Anisotropy From Urban Residential Neighbourhoods In Salt Lake City, Utah, Samantha J. Claessens Jun 2020

Airborne Observations Of Thermal Anisotropy From Urban Residential Neighbourhoods In Salt Lake City, Utah, Samantha J. Claessens

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Urban surface temperatures are important variables in urban climatological processes. This thesis examines the directional variability of remotely sensed urban surface temperatures (thermal anisotropy or Λ) for three vegetated residential neighbourhoods in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Airborne thermal remote sensing using a thermal imager sampled the directional brightness temperature (DBT) at three times within a day for each site. Results indicate that temporal variability over a 20 – 30-minute flight was not negligible. Average DBT were then extracted from atmospherically corrected images and plotted on polar plots. For low density residential neighbourhoods Λ is increased with increasing tree-canopy coverage …

The ANEMI model is an integrated assessment model of global change that emphasizes the role of water resources. The model is based on the principles of system dynamics simulation in order to analyze changes in the Earth system using feedback processes. Securing water resources for the future is a key issue of global change, and ties into global systems of population growth, climate change carbon cycle, hydrologic cycle, economy, energy production, land use and pollution generation.

This thesis focusses on the development of global water supplies necessary to keep pace with a growing population and global economy using an integrated …

Quantification Of Septic System Contribution To Nutrient Loads In Surface Waters, Archana Tamang Mar 2020

Quantification Of Septic System Contribution To Nutrient Loads In Surface Waters, Archana Tamang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Freshwater systems worldwide are threatened by excessive nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) loading. This study evaluated the contribution of septic systems to stream nutrient loads in nine subwatersheds. Stream sampling was conducted during low and high discharge conditions, with samples analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrate (NO3-N), and acesulfame (ACE; wastewater tracer). Higher septic effluent reached the subwatershed outlets during high discharge conditions. Subwatersheds with newer households had a lower percentage of septic effluent reaching the stream compared with subwatersheds with older households. Seasonal and event-based ACE concentration-discharge relationships revealed that the hydrological pathways delivering …

The Stability Of Temperate Lakes Under The Changing Climate, Aleksey Paltsev Sep 2019

The Stability Of Temperate Lakes Under The Changing Climate, Aleksey Paltsev

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

There is a collective prediction among ecologists that climate change will enhance phytoplankton biomass in temperate lakes. Yet there is noteworthy variation in the structure and regulating functions of lakes to make this statement challengeable and, perhaps, inaccurate. To generate a common understanding on the trophic transition of lakes, I examined the interactive effects of climate change and landscape properties on phytoplankton biomass in 12,644 lakes located in relatively intact forested landscapes. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration was used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. Chl-a concentration was obtained via analyzing Landsat satellite imagery data over a 28-year period (1984-2011) and using …

Climate Change And Dissolved Organic Matter In Subarctic Lakes: Relevance To Methylmercury Bioavailability, Kyra Lyn Simone Sep 2019

Climate Change And Dissolved Organic Matter In Subarctic Lakes: Relevance To Methylmercury Bioavailability, Kyra Lyn Simone

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

One of the first steps of methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation, uptake by phytoplankton, is regulated by dissolved organic matter (DOM). Methylmercury binds strongly with DOM, especially high-molecular weight (HMW) compounds containing reduced sulphur; this binding decreases MeHg bioavailability. Climate-induced changes were measured at the landscape level using ArcGIS; land-cover changes between 2005-2010 were assessed around lakes in Mackenzie Valley, NWT. The observed changes, a 10% increase in forest-classified area and up to 15% decrease in wetland area, will likely increase delivery of HMW DOM and MeHg to lakes. Partitioning experiments were conducted to examine effects of DOM ligand quality on MeHg …

Future Changes Of Hydroclimatic Extremes In Western North America Using A Large Ensemble: The Role Of Internal Variability, Mohammad Hasan Mahmoudi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Increases in the intensity and frequency of extreme events in Western North America (WNA) can cause significant socioeconomic problems and threaten existing infrastructure. In this study we analyze the impacts of climate change on hydroclimatic extremes and assess the role of internal variability over WNA, which collectively drain an area of about 1 million km2. We used gridded observations and downscaled precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature from seven General Circulation Models (GCMs) that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and a large ensemble of CanESM2 model simulations (CanESM2-LE; 50 members) for this analysis. Spatial …

Evaluating Restoration Success By Tracking The Structural And Functional Recovery Of Restored, Drained, And Intact Wetlands, Renee C. Howard Apr 2019

Evaluating Restoration Success By Tracking The Structural And Functional Recovery Of Restored, Drained, And Intact Wetlands, Renee C. Howard

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Wetland restoration efforts have increased on the Canadian prairies to compensate for widespread loss of wetland area, form, and function. Restoration activity presumes a direct replacement for natural wetlands, where restored wetlands provide equivalent ecological functions and services. However, restoration projects often show limited recovery success in biological structure and biogeochemical function. Using plant functional traits is an emerging approach to assessing ecological process and may provide a better indicator of wetland functional recovery than vegetation structural indicators alone. Here, I tracked vegetation structural metrics (i.e., species richness, composition, and cover) and plant functional traits over a chronosequence of restored …

Optimal Algorithms For Deriving Estimates Of Phytoplankton Biomass In Lakes From Landsat Satellite Imagery, Michael A. Dallosch Apr 2019

Optimal Algorithms For Deriving Estimates Of Phytoplankton Biomass In Lakes From Landsat Satellite Imagery, Michael A. Dallosch

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The frequency, intensity, and geographical distribution of harmful phytoplankton blooms are on the rise globally. There is a scientific need for estimates of historical and current phytoplankton data. This research develops mathematical algorithms for accurate assessment of surface chlorophyll-a (chl-a), a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, within freshwater lakes. Landsat satellite images (4-5 TM, 7 ETM and 8 OLI) were used to create predictive models (from 1984 to 2017) for seven ecoregions (ranging from the tropics to arctic). Correlation tests for 82 algorithms were conducted to establish the best fit models (linear, exponential, logarithmic, power) for chl-a …

Development Of Exploratory Data Analysis Methods For Chemical, Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Surface Water Quality Data: The Ontario Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Network, Shuyang Wang Dec 2018

Development Of Exploratory Data Analysis Methods For Chemical, Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Surface Water Quality Data: The Ontario Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Network, Shuyang Wang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Surface water quality (SWQ) databases have been widely compiled to provide information characterizing environmental conditions. But SWQ databases appear to be under-utilized, given the large investment in their creation. One reason is that database spatial, temporal, and compositional dimension vary through time, reflecting changing priorities through time and contrasts between different agencies, making coherent analysis challenging. This thesis explores the Ontario Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Network (PWQMN) to derive higher order hydrochemical properties, to render SWQ data in “network space” permitting catchment-wide visualization, and in undertaking temporal trend analysis.

Rivers play a critical role in the terrestrial carbon cycle, but …

Causes And Consequences Of Soil Carbon Mobilization And Lake Brownification In Northern Forested Landscapes, Óscar Esbrí Senar Nov 2018

Causes And Consequences Of Soil Carbon Mobilization And Lake Brownification In Northern Forested Landscapes, Óscar Esbrí Senar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Global changes are fundamentally changing terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Some of the highest rates of global change are in the north, where they are leading to the faster destabilization of forest soil carbon and its mobilization as dissolved organic matter and causing the brownification of lakes. This thesis investigated the causes of soil carbon destabilization and consequences of the mobilized soil carbon to lake food webs. The first finding was that global change increased carbon export from catchments. Increased temperatures and changes in hydrologic connectivity interacted with catchment topography to modulate the timing, magnitude, and fate of soil carbon export. …

The Effect Of Sub-Facet Scale Geometry On Vertical Facet Temperatures In Urban Street Canyons, Rainer V.J. Hilland Oct 2018

The Effect Of Sub-Facet Scale Geometry On Vertical Facet Temperatures In Urban Street Canyons, Rainer V.J. Hilland

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Surface temperature plays a key role in many micro-scale urban processes. Walls comprise a significant percentage of the urban surface, yet are under-represented by many methods of thermal remote sensing and not considered in detail by micro-scale surface temperature mod- els. This thesis presents a novel method of mobile thermal observation performed in urban street canyons in London, ON that uses a thermal imager as well as a visual spectrum camera to provide dense spatial and temporal resolution of micro-scale wall temperature distributions. Images are manually classified by a series of nominal variables and the resulting data set discusses the …

Metabolomics For Biomonitoring: Evaluation, Recommendations, And Test Of Efficacy, Sarah M. Mckenzie Oct 2018

Metabolomics For Biomonitoring: Evaluation, Recommendations, And Test Of Efficacy, Sarah M. Mckenzie

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Effective biomonitoring of aquatic environments is an integral component of ecosystem protection. The metabolome is an emerging indicator that may have the potential to serve as an ideal bioindicator due to its intrinsic capacity to detect physiological changes in organisms that could foreshadow ecosystem change. My thesis consisted of two complementary objectives. First, the metabolome was evaluated against several established criteria for an ideal bioindicator and found to have significant potential. Recommendations were also made regarding implementation of the metabolome into existing biomonitoring programs. Second, the metabolome of Hexagenia spp. was evaluated as a potential indicator for environmental effects of …

Microclimate Variability Of Select Toronto Neighbourhoods Under Hot Summertime Conditions, Timothy Wiechers Jun 2018

Microclimate Variability Of Select Toronto Neighbourhoods Under Hot Summertime Conditions, Timothy Wiechers

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Micrometeorological variability within cities has important implications for urban air and water quality, building energy consumption, and human health and thermal comfort. However, the monitoring of microscale climate is not routinely conducted. In most instances, primary meteorological observations are made under reproducible standard conditions (typically at an airport); but these open field observations tend to be unrepresentative of the intra-urban meteorological conditions.

This thesis used an alternative approach of conducting mobile traverse measurements using vehicle-mounted sensors to characterize the microclimates of Toronto, ON under hot, summertime weather conditions. Sampling occurred along two routes and incorporated sampling 8 intra-urban neighbourhoods with …

Biobutanol Production From Cellulosic And Sugar-Based Feedstock From The Corn Plant, Reyna Gomez-Flores

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this thesis, biobutanol production by biological fermentation was investigated from the corn plant, integrating two approaches. The first one was to utilize corn cobs, a cellulosic-based material. The second, using a new sugar-based material, sugarcorn juice. Utilizing suitable Clostridia strains for each substrate, these approaches converged into a biorefinery concept to produce renewable biofuels in Ontario, Canada. The corn cob pretreatment was carried out by a dilute acid method resulting in temperature as the variable with most significant effect towards glucose liberation. The enzymatic hydrolysis was performed utilizing a very low concentration of an enzymatic stock solution with approximately …

Modeling Of Suspended Sediment Concentration Using Conventional And Machine Learning Approaches, In Thames River, Canada, Issam Mohamed Apr 2018

Modeling Of Suspended Sediment Concentration Using Conventional And Machine Learning Approaches, In Thames River, Canada, Issam Mohamed

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Water resource management, planning, hydraulic design, environmental conservation, reservoir management and operation all require reliable information and data about Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC). To predict such data, direct sampling and Sediment Rating Curves (SRC) are commonly utilized. Since direct sampling can be risky during extreme weather events and SRC cannot provide satisfactorily dependable results, engineers are trying to propose new precise fore-casting approaches. Various soft computing techniques have been applied to model different hydrological and environmental problems and have showed promising results in this regard. Although many studies have been performed to simulate the phenomena of SSC at numerous rivers …

Migratory Movements Of The True Armyworm (Mythimna Unipuncta) (Haworth): An Investigation Using Naturally Occurring Stable Hydrogen Isotopes, Kyle Doward Mar 2018

Migratory Movements Of The True Armyworm (Mythimna Unipuncta) (Haworth): An Investigation Using Naturally Occurring Stable Hydrogen Isotopes, Kyle Doward

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A number of lepidopteran agricultural pests cannot overwinter in Canada and the annual populations each summer are the result of immigration. In most years densities are low but sporadically there are major outbreaks resulting in serious economic losses. Currently, the detection of potential epidemics is based on pheromone trap catch data in the spring, which leaves a very short window for farmers to intervene if there are high numbers of immigrants. It is accepted that immigrant moth species originate from the USA but we are unsure of whether they originate from one geographic source area every year or if it …

Rethinking Holocene Ecological Relationships Among Caribou, Muskoxen, And Human Hunters On Banks Island, Nwt, Canada: A Stable Isotope Approach, Jordon S. Munizzi Dec 2017

Rethinking Holocene Ecological Relationships Among Caribou, Muskoxen, And Human Hunters On Banks Island, Nwt, Canada: A Stable Isotope Approach, Jordon S. Munizzi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This dissertation explores the ecology of caribou (Rangifer tarandus spp.) and muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), and its relevance to human hunters on Banks Island, NWT, Canada, over the last 4000 years, primarily through the isotopic analysis of modern and archaeological faunal remains.

First, we establish baseline carbon and nitrogen isotope relationships between modern vegetation and caribou and muskox bone collagen using Bayesian mixing models. The models indicate that dwarf shrub (Salix arctica) does not contribute significantly to bone collagen isotopic compositions in either species, while sedges and yellow lichen (Cetraria tilesii) do. These findings …

Fabrication And Modification Of Titania Nanotube Arrays For Harvesting Solar Energy And Drug Delivery Applications, Ahmed El Ruby Abdel Rahman Mohamed

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The fast diminishing of fossil fuels in the near future, as well as the global warming caused by increasing greenhouse gases have motivated the urgent quest to develop advanced materials as cost-effective photoanodes for solar light harvesting and many other photocatalytic applications. Recently, titania nanotube arrays (TNTAs) fabricated by anodization process has attracted great interest due to their excellent properties such as: high surface area, vertically oriented, highly organized, one-dimensional, nanotubular structure, photoactivity, chemical stability and biocompatibility. This unique combination of excellent properties makes TNTAs an excellent photoanode for solar light harvesting. However, the relatively wide band gap energy of …

Identification Of Thresholds In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities Associated With Agricultural Land Cover, Jeremy Peter Grimstead Nov 2017

Identification Of Thresholds In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities Associated With Agricultural Land Cover, Jeremy Peter Grimstead

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Agricultural land use affects benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) community structure but riparian forest may mitigate its impact to within a specific threshold. BMI communities were sampled in small streams within the Grand River, Thames River, and Long Point watersheds in southwestern Ontario. The study assessed the location and amount of agricultural land use associated with variation in BMI assemblage structure. Three land use distribution scenarios were evaluated to isolate specific ranges of agricultural land use at either the riparian or catchment scale, with the adjoining scale covering as wide a gradient of agricultural land use as possible. We did identify thresholds …

Spatio-Temporal Variation Of Benthic Metabolism In A Large Regulated River, Craig Irwin Nov 2017

Spatio-Temporal Variation Of Benthic Metabolism In A Large Regulated River, Craig Irwin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Spatio-temporal patterns of benthic metabolism were measured to determine associations with substrate (cobble vs sand), channel location (main vs side channel), flow regulation (medium-head vs low-head) and temporal variability during the summer months. Benthic metabolism was estimated in two reaches of the Saint John River in New Brunswick, Canada using benthic chambers. General linear models indicated gross primary production (GPP) and community respiration (CR) was greater in cobble substrate in June, but only GPP was greater in July. CR differed between channel locations in July with greater rates in the side channel. Assessment of flow regulation showed greater GPP in …
