The Yupik people of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska have a traditional subsistence lifestyle with the majority of their diet consisting of local birds, fish, seal, walrus, and whale. Diets based on fish and marine mammals, such as the Yupik diet, are potential pathways for exposure to mercury and other toxic metals. At St. Lawrence Island, metal contaminants may come from local sources such as weathered rock or two abandoned U.S. military bases or remote sources through atmospheric deposition or seasonal migration of animals to the island.

Observations Of The Transient Characteristics Of The Hydrological Balance, Matthew Czikowsky

The impact of transient input events on the hydrological balance components are studied over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. First, interception evaporation and energy-balance changes during and following precipitation events are examined at the site spatial and event temporal scale. Second, the hydrological response to spatial and seasonal changes in precipitation and evapotranspiration due to land cover changes are examined on the small-to-large watershed scale, covering the event to seasonal time scales.

Hypertension is recognized as one of the serious chronic diseases of humankind and as a major risk factor for death from heart attack and stroke. The cause of essential hypertension is poorly understood. We have investigated the relationship of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticide exposure with hypertension and blood pressure in organochlorines exposed residents of Anniston, Alabama.

Photochemical smog is a phenomenon associated with pollution in urban atmospheres arising from the photochemical oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of nitrogen oxides. The oxidation process can lead to ozone and secondary air pollutants including particle formation which reduce visibility. The term "photochemical smog" is used to describe this pollutant mixture. The further degradation of secondary air pollutants could also have an impact on the atmospheric oxidation capacity. However, the atmospheric degradation mechanisms of the secondary pollutants are still not fully understood. Airborne particles which are ubiquitous in the atmosphere have profound influences on air quality, public health and global climate. On a small urban scale, vehicle-emitted nanoparticles, being one of the major sources of airborne particles, have been shown to have adverse impacts on public health. On a much larger global scale, uncertainties on nanoparticle formation in atmosphere pose an important challenge to our understanding of the indirect radiative forcing of aerosols on global climate change.
