The Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and the Land and Environment Court Act 1979, comprise a legislative duo providing statutory control over the use of public and private property in the most populous state of Australia, New South Wales (NSW). Statutory planning in NSW arguably commenced in 1951 with the Cumberland Planning Scheme Ordinance which was in turn based upon pre-war English town and country planning, and is generally regarded as the foundation for much Australian planning. The predicted rise in sea level and associated increasing storm action over the next half century is colliding with settled property law for tidal properties much of which is held on the Australian coast in private ownership. Faster change to the climate is reported with more serious risk than anticipated, with implications for sea level rise now expected at the upper end of projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of around 0.8m by 2100 along the Australian coastline.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to deepen understanding of what is working and what is not working within green workplace environments. The paper examines management and employee perceptions of their experiences of working in green workplace environments and assesses the effectiveness of such places.Design/methodology/approach – Being the second stage of a longitudinal study, this paper relies on a data set derived from its survey of 31 management and 351 employee respondents occupying Green Building Council Australia Green Star-rated offices for more than 12 months.Findings – The green workplace is a great place to be, at least most …
