The ecological conditions leading to delayed dispersal and helping behavior are generally thought to follow one of two contrasting scenarios: that conditions are stable and predictable, resulting in young being ecologically forced to remain as helpers (extrinsic constraints and the habitat saturation hypothesis), or that conditions are highly variable and unpredictable, leading to the need for helpers to raise young, at least when conditions are poor (intrinsic constraints and the hard life hypothesis). A Novel Pulsed Corona Discharge Reactor Based On Surface Streamers For No Conversion From N2-O2 Mixture Gases, M. A. Malik, Karl H. Schoenbach

A novel pulsed corona discharge reactor is described which utilizes surface-plasma along insulating surfaces. The electrodes are comprised of a stainless steel wire anode of 150 µm diameter stretched along the surface of a glass sheet and two parallel aluminum strips as cathodes. An eight-stage Marx bank, which provides 60 ns, 40-45 kV monopolar pulses, was used to produce the surface streamers in nitrogen-oxygen mixtures at atmospheric pressure. With increasing oxygen content, the energy efficiency for NO2 and O3 synthesis was found to increase. The energy efficiency is almost the same for the surface-plasma and volume-plasma. Atmospheric particulate matter samples were collected from mid-Atlantic and northeastern U. S. (Virginia and New York, respectively) sites to assess the fossil versus contemporary sources contributing to aerosol organic carbon (OC) and the implications for its deposition to watersheds. Mean particulate matter total OC (TOC) deposition rates (wet + dry deposition) were calculated to be 1.6 and 2.4 mg C m-2 d-1 for the Virginia and New York sites, respectively. Wet deposition of particulate TOC was determined to be the dominant depositional mode, accounting for >65% (Virginia) and >80% (New York) of total aerosol TOC deposition. Isotopic mass …

The meso- and bathypelagic ocean comprises the largest habitat on earth, yet we know very little about the distribution and activity of protists in this environment. These small eukaryotes are responsible for controlling bacterial abundance in the surface ocean and are major players in the material and energy transfer of pelagic food webs. In this paper, we quantify microbial eukaryotes in the deep North Atlantic, as well as provide a basic characterization of eukaryote community changes through the water column.
