Factors Limiting Benthic Algal Abundance In Virginia Streams Of The Coastal Plain, Michael Brandt
Factors Limiting Benthic Algal Abundance In Virginia Streams Of The Coastal Plain, Michael Brandt
Theses and Dissertations
Algae are important components of stream food webs and often used in biomonitoring assessments. Little is known regarding the factors that limit their abundance in streams of the VA Coastal Plain. The surficial geology of the Coastal Plain is predominately sandy deposits which comprise the dominant substrate in streams of this region. In a comparative study of five streams located near the VCU Rice Center, we quantified substrate composition, light availability, and nutrient concentrations to assess their relative importance in determining benthic algal abundance. The proportion of stream area comprised of hard substrates was a significant predictor of variation in …
Mechanisms Controlling Metal And Phosphorus Dynamics In An Experimentally Acidified Watershed In Maine, Ivan J. Fernandez
Mechanisms Controlling Metal And Phosphorus Dynamics In An Experimentally Acidified Watershed In Maine, Ivan J. Fernandez
University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports
The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM) is a long-term (14+ years), whole-watershed experiment designed to study ecosystem responses to acid deposition. One watershed has been treated bimonthly by helicopter with nitrogen and sulfur since 1989. Results have documented progressive acidification of soils and streams, substantial losses of soil nutrients (e.g., calcium), increased nitrogen cycling, and changes in tree foliar chemistry. Little research has been done on phosphorus, a critical nutrient in ecosystems. This project will evaluate the effects of long-term watershed acidification on metal mobilization (focusing on aluminum and iron) and linked effects on phosphorus at BBWM by studying …
Nutrient Uptake And Mineralization During Leaf Decay In Streams – A Model Simulation, J. R. Webster, J. D. Newbold, Steven A. Thomas, P. J. Mulholland
Nutrient Uptake And Mineralization During Leaf Decay In Streams – A Model Simulation, J. R. Webster, J. D. Newbold, Steven A. Thomas, P. J. Mulholland

We developed a stoichiometrically explicit computer model to examine how heterotrophic uptake of nutrients and microbial mineralization occurring during the decay of leaves in streams may be important in modifying nutrient concentrations. The simulations showed that microbial uptake can substantially decrease stream nutrient concentrations during the initial phases of decomposition, while mineralization may produce increases in concentrations during later stages of decomposition. The simulations also showed that initial nutrient content of the leaves can affect the stream nutrient concentration dynamics and determine whether nitrogen or phosphorus is the limiting nutrient. Finally, the simulations suggest a net retention (uptake > mineralization) of …
