Wildlife Of The Gold Coast Wetlands, Shelley Burgin, Daryl Mcphee Aug 2015

Wildlife Of The Gold Coast Wetlands, Shelley Burgin, Daryl Mcphee

Daryl McPhee

Extract: Water in the landscape of the Gold Coast is dominated by marine and marine-influenced systems. The most obvious are the in-shore waters abutting the Gold Coast's world-famous beaches and estuaries. Little more than a glance at a map of the city also reveals the extensive canal estates built to take advantage of the marine waters, and indeed expand them. The waters of the rivers mix with the ocean's waters in the estuaries. These ecosystems are valuable nursery areas for marine wildlife, particularly, but not restricted to, fishes of commercial and recreational value.

Marine Environments Of The Gold Coast: Out With The Old, In With The New, Daryl Mcphee

Daryl McPhee

Extract: The marine environments of the Gold Coast comprise one of the most highly modified and heavily utilised waterways in Australia. Chapters 2 and 3 discussed changes in the historic land use patterns. Just what has this meant to the marine environments of the Gold Coast? In this chapter the contemporary marine h abitats of the Gold Coast are described, along with the fauna that those habitats support. We talk about how the current status of the habitats compares with various historical points in time, and the role of novel habitats. Given the impor tance of recreational fishing to both …

None of this is the true food of the Gold Coast.

Feral Deer In The Suburbs: An Emerging Issue For Australia?, Shelley Burgin, Mariama Mattila, Daryl Mcphee, Tor Hundloe

Daryl McPhee

Deer are not endemic to Australia, but were introduced for game and aesthetics between the early 18th and 20th centuries. Until recent decades, most deer descended from these introductions. Before the 1970s when deer numbers and distribution expanded dramatically, farming was a modest enterprise. With the collapse of farming in the 1990s, large numbers of deer were deliberately released and translocated. Feral numbers and herds have subsequently expanded, and are increasingly encroaching on urban areas. As a new issue in Australia, views toward feral deer are polarized and span “welcome guest” to “major pest.” The emerging urban deer issues need …

The Management Of Recreational Fisheries, Daryl Mcphee Jul 2012

The Management Of Recreational Fisheries, Daryl Mcphee

Daryl McPhee

Coastal fisheries are complex ecological and social systems. In many countries, including Australia, they have evolved over time with a shift in focus from the commercial to the recreational sector. Recreational fishing can be defined as any fishing for which the primary motivation is leisure rather than profit, and for which harvested animals do not constitute an individual’s primary resource for nutritional needs. It is an ubiquitous activity in marine and freshwater regions of Australia, with most recreational fishing activity occurring in estuarine, coastal and shallow reef areas. The dominant form of recreational fishing is line fishing (angling), although it …
