Concerns have been raised over the potential impacts of the Animas/LaPlata project and the regulation of Navajo Dam. Flow depletions in the San Juan River may adversely affect the remnant population of the native fish, particularly the endangered Colorado squawfish and the razorback sucker. A multiyear research program is currently being conducted on the San Juan River as a result of a Jeopardy Opinion delivered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Animas/LaPlata and the subsequent Reasonable and Prudent Alternative that was accepted. A mulidisciplinary research team composed of representatives from the affected agencies is currently investigating the relationship …

Y. Peter Sheng, the Principal Investigator of the proposed study, has developed and applied three-dimensional hydrodynamic models since 1972. These models were developed for a variety of water bodies (including estuaries, lakes, and coastal waters) for a variety of government agencies (e.g., USEPA, USGS, SBNEP, USAE, SFWMD, and SJRWMD) and petroleum companies (Standard Oil and Mobil) to solve a variety of problems. Basically, the nature of the problem and the water body determines the purpose of the modeling study and hence the features and capabilities of the model.

This report addresses one task of the nutrient monitoring project, the development of "interim" (i.e., preliminary) annual budgets for the macronutrients nitrogen and phosphorus in Tampa Bay's major sub-basins. For the purposes of the report, those sub-basins are defined as Hillsborough Bay (HB) , Old Tampa Bay (OTB) , Middle Tampa Bay (MTB) , and Lower Tampa Bay (LTB). The information supplied in this report presents monitoring results of water quality, phytoplankton biomass, phytoplankton abundance and taxonomic composition, and bacteriological parameters measured by the City of Tampa Bay Study Group at three stations in the TBC and two stations in the Hillsborough river, upstream of the City of Tampa dam (Figure 1). The time period discussed in this report is from the start of the program in the 1984 through 1991. Results of the measured parameters are presented as annual means, climatological means and summary statistics for the study period.

The proposed study will examine effects of nutrient limitation on phytoplankton growth rates in Tampa Bay. The response of growth rate to changes in nutrient additions will be indicated through changes in algal biomass (chlorophyll-a) and fixation of CO2 (C‑14­ uptake). The selected method is similar to methods currently used by the states of Maryland and Virginia for determination of nutrient limitation in Chesapeake Bay waters (Fisher et al. 1992a and b). Ambient HO measurements by low-pressure laser-excited fluorescence with chemical modulation, and supporting ozone and water-vapor data, are presented for periods in May and August 1987. The observed peak daytime ambient HO concentrations in Oregon are in the range (2.5 to 8) times106 molecules cm⁻³ and show small negative offsets due to photochemical interference. Direct measurements of the interference at fixed [O₃] give the dependence on ambient [H₂O] and on the modulating reagent [isobutane]. At ambient [O₃]=30 p.p.b. and 10 torr H₂O, with excitation and detection at a total pressure of 4 torr, the net interference is equal to [HO]=-1.3times10⁶ molecule …

HO₂ concentrations have been determined at two Oregon sites for continuous periods of 36 to 48 hours, using fluorescence assay with gas expansion. At the sea level coastal site (45degN 124degW), NNW winds prevailed during daytime, and a point measurement of very low total nonmethane hydrocarbon concentration indicated the presence of remote tropospheric air of oceanic origin. At the urban site, HO₂ was determined during moderately low ozone pollution levels. At both sites, maximum daily [HO₂] was in the range of 1-2times10⁸ cm⁻³ under clear-sky conditions, with an estimated overall uncertainty of 40%.

A computational procedure (RIPS, Relative Index for Pesticides and Soils) was developed as a conservative estimator of pesticide leaching and groundwater contamination based on soil and pesticide properties, and water table depth. RIPS values offer guidance in pesticide selection and identify situations where a detailed site-specific evaluation should be conducted.

The City of Tampa, Bay Study Group (BSG), has monitored the effects of sewage pollution abatement in Hillsborough Bay since 1976. Within the last decade, water quality improvements and evidence of minor seagrass revegetation in Hillsborough Bay prompted the BSG to initiate a seagrass study to compliment other programs assessing the environmental status of Hillsborough Bay.

The objective of the Remnant Vegetation Protection Scheme is to encourage land owners to fence and protect areas of remnant vegetation for the purposes of flora and fauna conservation, land conservation and aesthetics. The means by which land owners are encouraged to protect remnant vegetation is the provision of a grant equal to half the cost of labour and materials to erect a stock-proof fence around the vegetation concerned. The RVPS is jointly administered by the Departments of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) and Agriculture (DAWA), with the latter as the lead agency. This paper examines the subject of the international regulation of the maritime transport of hazardous cargo. For the scope of this paper, hazardous cargo includes all that material which is carried by vessels for market and as waste with the exception of oil. The study examines the trend of the regulatory process by reviewing the development of concern, international agreements, codes and the International Maritime Organization. The Rhode Island Marine Debris Pilot Project was initiated in Newport, R.I. during the summer of 1991. The objective of the project was to decrease recreational boaters' contribution to marine debris. Two methods were used to achieve this goal. First, trash and recycling disposal facilities were increased around the harbor. Secondly, educational literature on the environmental consequences of marine debris, and the law that applies to overboard disposal, were distributed throughout the local marine community. The impact of privately owned sewage treatment plants, a viable alternative to on-site septic systems, is examined in regards to future land-use patterns. It was hypothesized that the use of these facilities would lead to a greater loss of open space, in the coastal City of Gloucester, Massachusetts, than if only conventional on-site septic systems were to be permitted. Constraints to development such as zoning, wetlands, soil characteristics, parcel size, and economic viability were applied to undeveloped property in Gloucester. Global temperatures are expected to increase as a result of the so-called "greenhouse" effect, causing concern among scientists who fear that the sea level may rise as much as three meters by 2100. Using mid-range seal-level-rise scenarios of 1.5 and 2 meters potential socioeconomic impacts on coastal Bangladesh are discussed. The objectives of this study were to examine depuration aspects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a hard-shell clam Mercenaria mercenaria, and to characterize PAHs by the depuration kinetics. In this investigation, clams were exposed to artificial sea water containing a mixture of eight PAHs (i.e., naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, flouranthene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[a]pyrene) for 48 hours. The clams were then transferred into clean (PAH-free) artificial seawater for release, and sampled at predetermined intervals. The target PAHs were extracted from the clam tissue and quantified by a gas chromatograph equipped with a capillary glass column and FID.

The western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus griseus Ord) occur only in the Pacific states and in a small corner of extreme western Nevada. Field studies of aspects of the ecology of the most widely distributed subspecies of western gray squirrel (S. griseus) were conducted at three sites in the ponderosa pine-Oregon white oak zone on the eastern slopes of Mt. Hood, Wasco County, Oregon, between 1981 and 1989. From 1981 through 1987, a Hunter Cooperation Program provided remains of squirrels shot during the annual late summer-early autumn hunting season. Hillsborough Bay, the eastern uppermost section of the Tampa Bay system, is surrounded by a large metropolitan complex, supports extensive industrial activity, and serves as a major shipping port of fertilizer products. The Bay was determined to be highly eutrophic during the late 1960s. The City of Tampa's primary sewage treatment plant and runoff from fertilizer industry activities were considered as the major sources of excessive nutrient loading.
