The Lake Mead Fertilization Project is a research program designed to investigate the potential for using large-scale artificial fertilization to enhance the game fisheries of this reservoir through an increase in the population of threadfin shad, the system's primary forage species. A substantial decline in the population of largemouth bass, together with poor condition of adult striped bass, are the two major issues affecting the Lake Mead game fisheries. Both issues have been hypothesized to be a result of an inadequate amount of forage in the reservoir. Previous studies have in turn suggested that a major factor limiting the shad …

Mining activity occurs very widely over relatively small areas of the rangelands. However, it is an intense landuse which can create significant offsite effects. Mining activity is most common around metamorphic 'greenstone' belts and broad drainages. Pastoralists reported both benefits and adverse affects as a consequence of mining activity. The main grievances related to unnecessary and excessive disturbance of pastoral land and the failure of operators to inform the pastoralist of their intentions.

Third-Generation Fage Instrument For Tropospheric Hydroxyl Radical Measurement, C. Y. Chan, Thomas M. Hard, A. A. Mehrabzadeh, Robert J. O'Brien

The authors have constructed a single-stage, frequency-doubled, copper vapor laser-pumped dye laser to be used in the measurement of atmospheric hydroxyl radical concentrations. This laser can be tuned to either the 1← 0 or 0← 0 vibrational transition in the electronic transition ²Sigmalarr²Pi. A new photon counting instrument is used for HO fluorescence detection. Theoretical and experimental studies of instrument performance show better sensitivities and reduced photolytic interferences than have been possible with previous systems based upon Nd:YAG pumping.

The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County requested on August 29, 1990 that the City of Tampa, Department of Sanitary Sewers, supply information which would provide justification for continued variance from the 1 mg/l effluent limitations of phosphorous for the Hookers Point AWWTP. It was also requested that long-term water quality trends in Hillsborough Bay and Tampa Bay be documented in support of the phosphorous variance.

The 300-acre Monticello Mill Tailings site is comprised of a 7S-acre inactive uranium and vanadium milling operation and affected peripheral properties in Monticello, San Juan County, Utah. Surrounding land use is rural residential and agricultural. The site overlies a shallow alluvial aquifer, and part of the site lies within the floodplain of Montezuma Creek. Approximately IS-acres of wetlands adjacent to Montezuma Creek also have been contaminated by tailings. In 1940, the site was operated as a vanadium ore-buying station. Milling of ore began in 1942, and a vanadium/uranium sludge product was produced onsite from 1943 to 1944. Onsite uranium milling …

The purpose of this research is to identify factors that contribute to wood fuel consumption as a space heating source and estimate a county-wide proportion for wood fuel consuming households. In addition, environmental problems associated with deforestation such as erosion and loss of wildlife habitat are delineated; moreover, air pollution resulting from wood fuel emissions are discussed.

An exhaustive literature review provided the basis for the study. Data on Warren County wood fuel consumption patterns were derived from a mail survey. Proportion estimates were tested by using a classical two-tail test of hypothesis. Subsequently, factors were identified and used in …

Procambarus clarkii are found in extremely low numbers throughout Lake Mead, AZ-NV. The crayfish are an important dietary component for game fish. Enhancement of the crayfish population would broaden the fishery forage base. Crayfish were stocked and monitored in a study cove on Saddle Island to determine if the Procambarus clarkii population could be enhanced. A trapping survey of the area after the following reproductive season yielded low numbers of crayfish. A comparison of pre-stocking and post-stocking catch per trap day (CPTD) values revealed no significant increase in the population. Karst terrains, such as the Lost River Karst Ground-Water Basin, are extremely vulnerable to ground-water contamination. Seven physical factors: depth to water, recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic conductivity, are evaluated using the DRASTIC system to determine the ground-water pollution potential of the study area. A numerical value is calculated for each of the seven factors, and a map layer for each factor is produced. These layers are then “added” together to produce a DRASTIC ground-water pollution potential map. The effectiveness of each factor in evaluating the pollution potential of karst terrain is …

The City of Tampa, Bay Study Group (BSG), has monitored the effects of sewage pollution abatement in Hillsborough Bay since 1976. Within the last decade, water quality improvements and evidence of minor seagrass revegetation in Hillsborough Bay prompted the BSG to initiate a seagrass study to compliment other programs assessing the environmental status of Hillsborough Bay.

The present report examines the past and current relationship between nitrogen loadings and ambient chlorophyll-a eutrophic subdivision of Tampa Bay (Task 1). A management strategy for eutrophication abatement, involving the reduction of present nitrogen loadings to levels which will sustain the desirable chlorophyll-a concentration and support persistent seagrass growth in the near future, is also presented for Hillsborough Bay (Task 3). The urgent need for a comprehensive long-term water quality and loading source monitoring program, specifically for Hillsborough Bay, is also discussed (Task 4).

In May of 1990, Tilcon-Maine, Inc. submitted an application to mine gravel on the east side of Horse Point Road on Horse Point in the Town of Belgrade. The project site covers 46 acres and the proposed excavation covers 16 acres. An estimated 740,000 cubic yards of material will be removed over a period of six or seven years (Pfister, pers. comm.). Effects Of Ambient Lake Mohave Temperatures On Development, Oxygen Consumption, And Hatching Success Of The Razorback Sucker, Michael A. Bozek, Larry J. Paulson, Gene R. Wilde

Spawning of razorback suckers, Xyrauchen texanus, in Lake Mohave occurred from 10-22° C and larvae were collected at water temperatures from 10-15° C in 1982 and 1983. In the laboratory, hatching success was similar from 12-20° C, but reduced hatching success was found at 10° C while none hatched at 8°C. Development rate and oxygen consumption were positively related to incubation temperature. Direct effects of ambient Lake Mohave water temperatures on hatching success of razorback sucker embryos are considered minimal. Historical spawning temperatures for the species are hypothesized based upon successful incubation temperatures and comparison to the white sucker, …

The Elizabeth River is a highly industrialized waterway that divides the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth at its confluence with the lower Chesapeake Bay. It is home to the largest Naval base on the East Coast, numerous ship repair facilities, bulk and containerized cargo facilities, industrial and urban activities and wood creosoting (preserving) operations (all except one have been abandoned). This degree of industrialization has resulted in the pollution of the river, with high concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH, Bieri et al., 1986).
