(First paragraph) Today represents a particularly exciting time, as our planet’s energy system is undergoing major changes due to dramatically decreasing renewable energy prices and increasing societal concerns over greenhouse gas emissions, criteria pollutants (arsenic, mercury, NOx, particulate matter), and climate change. These factors are pushing society toward deep decarbonization of our energy system, perhaps the most challenging issue facing the planet today. Unfortunately, wind and solar energy, while both promising generation sources, come with intermittency challenges and have limitations in their abilities to impact industrial and transportation sector demands where fossil fuel energy carriers based on chemical bonds have …

High Tech High Touch: Lessons Learned From Project Haiti 2011, Yan Tang, Marc Compere, Yung Lun Wong, Jared Anthony Coleman, Matthew Charles Selkirk

Marc Compere

In this paper, we will share our experiences and lessons learned from a design project for providing clean water to a Haitian orphanage (Project Haiti 2011). Supported by funds from a renewable energy company and the university president’s office, five engineering students and two faculty members from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University successfully designed and installed a solar powered water purification system for an orphanage located in Chambellan, Haiti. This paper discusses the unique educational experiences gained from unusual design constraints, such as ambiguity of existing facilities due to limited communication, logistics of international construction at a remote village location, and cross-cultural …

Effects Of Emf Emissions From Undersea Electric Cables On Coral Reef Fishes, Robert F. Jermain Jul 2016

Effects Of Emf Emissions From Undersea Electric Cables On Coral Reef Fishes, Robert F. Jermain

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this project was to determine if the electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions from undersea power cables impacted the local and transient marine life, with an emphasis on reef fishes. The work was done at South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Broward County, Florida. This facility functions as the hub for a range of active undersea detection and data transmission cables. It has multiple active submarine power cables that extend several miles offshore and which can deliver power and enable data transmission to and from a range of acoustic and EMF sensors. The …

In every power system there are consumer areas away from traditional power networks. Existing grid expansion can always be treated as one of the ways of powering them over long transmission and distribution lines. This is often characterized by significant transmission losses, as well as significant investments, depending on the distance and the infrastructure development. On the other hand, there are cases when these consumers are not connected to the power system and use alternative methods of supply. For that matter, possible solutions may use locally available energy sources. In this paper, comparative analyses between independent power supply through particular …

Solar Irradiation Estimator Based On A Self-Calibrated Reference Solar Cell, Touria Hassboun, Lhoussain El Bahir, Youness Aite Driss, Mustapha El Adnani Jan 2016

Solar Irradiation Estimator Based On A Self-Calibrated Reference Solar Cell, Touria Hassboun, Lhoussain El Bahir, Youness Aite Driss, Mustapha El Adnani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper we propose a concept for estimating solar irradiation based on measurements of the current, voltage, and temperature of a photovoltaic (PV) cell. The estimation of the irradiation is obtained by processing these measurements using a PV cell mathematical model combined with a PI controller. Since the PV cell current is very sensitive to the irradiance level, the principle of the method is to force the model to reproduce the same current as that measured on the cell by applying an appropriate irradiance as input, for measured temperature and voltage. The appropriate irradiance, which is the output of …

Energy-Efficient And Environmentally Friendly Power Dispatch By Trigeneration With Renewable Energy And Energy Storage, Faisal Pazheri, Mohd Fauzi Othman, Nazar H. Malik, Abdulrehman Ali Al-Arainy Jan 2016

Energy-Efficient And Environmentally Friendly Power Dispatch By Trigeneration With Renewable Energy And Energy Storage, Faisal Pazheri, Mohd Fauzi Othman, Nazar H. Malik, Abdulrehman Ali Al-Arainy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The importance of energy-efficient power generation that effectively utilizes the available fossil fuels is increasing due to the gradual decline in fossil fuel reserves. Furthermore, concern about global warming has led to rapid growth in renewable energy and energy storage technologies. This trend is encouraging power utilities to effectively exploit the use of renewable energy resources (RESs) and energy storage facilities (ESFs) for power supply systems. In this regards, trigeneration in the presence of RESs and ESFs can play an important role for efficient and clean power dispatch. This paper discusses the optimum power dispatch using a hybrid power plant …

A New Algorithm Of Parameter Estimation Of A Photovoltaic Solar Panel, Mustapha Belarbi, Kamel Haddouche, El-Habib Belarbi, Amine Boudghene-Stambouli Jan 2016

A New Algorithm Of Parameter Estimation Of A Photovoltaic Solar Panel, Mustapha Belarbi, Kamel Haddouche, El-Habib Belarbi, Amine Boudghene-Stambouli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present a new approach for estimating the one-diode model parameters of a photovoltaic solar panel according to the irradiance and temperature. These parameters are given, at a known irradiance and temperature, from the knowledge of three operating points: short circuit, open circuit, and maximum power. In the first step, the adopted approach concerns the resolution of the system of equations constituting the three operating points to write all the model parameters according to series resistance. Secondly, we make an iterative resolution at the optimal operating point by using the Newton--Raphson method to calculate the series resistance …

Renewable Energy Transition: Dynamic Systems Analysis, Policy Scenarios, And Trade-Offs For The State Of Vermont, Christopher Ernest Clement Jan 2016

Renewable Energy Transition: Dynamic Systems Analysis, Policy Scenarios, And Trade-Offs For The State Of Vermont, Christopher Ernest Clement

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

There is broad consensus that a transition to renewable energy and a low-carbon economy is crucial for future development and prosperity, yet there are differing perspectives on how such a transition should be achieved. The overarching goal of this dissertation, which is comprised of three interrelated studies, is to analyze and compare energy futures scenarios to achieve a renewable energy transition and low-carbon economy in the State of Vermont. In the first study, an analysis is presented of the role of energy pricing regimes and economic policy in the context of pursuing a renewable energy transition in the State of …

Experimental Performance Comparison Of A 2-Axis Sun Tracking System With Fixed System Under The Climatic Conditions Of Düzce, Turkey, Ali̇ Öztürk, Selman Alkan, Uğur Hasirci, Sali̇h Tosun

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, an experimental performance comparison of a 2-axis tracking system with a fixed panel in a solar renewable energy system is conducted. The paper mainly focuses on a cost-benefit analysis of fixed and tracking modules. For this aim, an experimental setup was built and periodical measurements were then obtained from the setup. To provide a better comparison, the panels were exposed to the same conditions during the measurements. By considering the real-time experimental results, the paper provides a quantitative analysis of the feasibility of tracking panels for domestic applications as well as an analysis of payback period if …
