Modified Broyden’S Method For Accelerating Convergence In Self-Consistent Calculations, Duane D. Johnson Dec 1988

Modified Broyden’S Method For Accelerating Convergence In Self-Consistent Calculations, Duane D. Johnson

Duane D. Johnson

A modification to Broyden’s method for obtaining stable and computationally efficient convergence in self-consistent calculations is developed and discussed. The method incorporates the advantages of two schemes proposed by Srivastava and by Vanderbilt and Louie without any increase in complexity. Its improvement over their methods is discussed. The present method is compared with two other widely used convergence methods, simple mixing and Anderson’s method, for the case of the disordered binary alloy Ni0.35Fe0.65 on the verge of a magnetic instability and is shown to be much improved in stability and rate of convergence.

Transformation Based Endorsement Systems, Thomas Sudkamp Nov 1988

Transformation Based Endorsement Systems, Thomas Sudkamp

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Evidential reasoning techniques classically represent support for a hypothesis by a numeric value or an evidential interval. The combination of support is performed by an arithmetic rule which often requires restrictions to be placed on the set of possibilities. These assumptions usually require the hypotheses to be exhausitive and mutually exclusive. Endorsement based classification systems represent support for the alternatives symbolically rather than numerically. A framework for constructing endorsement systems is presented in which transformations are defined to generate and update the knowledge base. The interaction of the knowledge base and transformations produces a non-monotonic reasoning system. Two endorsement based …

Mulch: A Multi-Layer Channel Router Using One, Two, And Three Layer Partitions, Ronald I. Greenberg, Alex T. Ishii, Alberto L. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli Nov 1988

Mulch: A Multi-Layer Channel Router Using One, Two, And Three Layer Partitions, Ronald I. Greenberg, Alex T. Ishii, Alberto L. Sangiovanni-Vincentelli

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Chameleon, a channel router for three layers of interconnect, has been implemented to accept specification of an arbitrary number of layers. Chameleon is based on a strategy of decomposing the multilayer problem into two- and three-layer problems in which one of the layers is reserved primarily for vertical wire runs and the other layer(s) for horizontal runs. In some situations, however, it is advantageous to consider also layers that allow the routing of entire nets, using both horizontal and vertical wires. MulCh is a multilayer channel router that extends the algorithms of Chameleon in this direction. MulCh can route channels …

Goes Imagery Fills Gaps In Montserrat Volcanic Cloud Observations, Mark A. Davies, William I. Rose Oct 1988

Goes Imagery Fills Gaps In Montserrat Volcanic Cloud Observations, Mark A. Davies, William I. Rose

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

GOES satellite imagery offers great potential to lessen the risk of volcanic ash clouds to aviation, and the situation at Montserrat in the Caribbean is providing the proof. Many transatlantic, commercial, and private aircraft use airspace around Montserrat, where the Soufriere Hills Volcano has been erupting since 1995.

Worldwide over the last 15 years, more than 80 airplanes have reported encountering volcanic ash along flight paths. Encounters cannot be avoided because onboard radar cannot detect fine-grained ash particles—those with a radius of 15 microns or less. In recent years volcanic cloud encounters are estimated to have caused hundreds of millions …

Slip, Twinning, And Fracture At A Grain Boundary In The L12 Ordered Structure—Aς = 9 Tilt Boundary, Alexander H. King, M. H. Yoo Oct 1988

Slip, Twinning, And Fracture At A Grain Boundary In The L12 Ordered Structure—Aς = 9 Tilt Boundary, Alexander H. King, M. H. Yoo

Alexander H. King

The role of interaction between slip dislocations and a Σ = 9 tilt boundary in localized microplastic deformation, cleavage, or intergranular fracture in the Li2 ordered structure has been analyzed by using the anisotropic elasticity theory of dislocations and fracture. Screw superpartials cross slip easily at the boundary onto the (1$\overline 1$1) and the (001) planes at low and high temperatures, respectively. Transmission of primary slip dislocations onto the conjugate slip system occurs with a certain degree of difficulty, which is eased by localized disordering. When the transmission is impeded, cleavage fracture on the ($\overline 1$11) plane is predicted to …

Comments On Proposed Transport Protocols, Anil Bhatia, James Sterbenz, Gurudatta M. Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Over the last few years, a number of research groups have made considerable progress on the design of high speed networks- on the order of a few hundred Mbps to the few Gbps. The emphasis of this work has been on the design of packet switches and on the design of network access protocols. However, this work has not yet addressed the internetworking and transport level issues in the high speed internet. As part of our effort on the design of VHSI model, we considered the appropriateness of recently proposed transport protocols, NETBLT and VMTP, as candidates for the transport …

Division-Of-Wave-Front Thin-Film Beam Splitter For Generating Binary Patterns Of Orthogonal Elliptical Polarization States, R. M.A. Azzam Sep 1988

Division-Of-Wave-Front Thin-Film Beam Splitter For Generating Binary Patterns Of Orthogonal Elliptical Polarization States, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A division-of-wave-front thin-film beam splitter is described that reflects monochromatic light at oblique incidence with orthogonal elliptical polarization states. It consists of a metallic substrate partially covered with a transparent thin film that inverts the ratio ρ of the complex p and s reflection coefficients at the principal angle of the metal. Any pattern of coated and uncoated areas of the substrate is imprinted upon the reflected wave front as a corresponding two-dimensional spatial binary polarization pattern. A specific design is given that uses a Au substrate at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The effects of small errors in the …

Relational Completeness Of Show And Tell Visual Programming Language, Takayuki Dan Kimura

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this paper we present the database applications of the Show and Tell Language (STL) and demonstrate the relational completeness of the language. STL is a visual programming language designed for novice computer users who are not familiar with keyboarding. A program can be constructed by using only a pointing device, except for textual data entry. A program can be constructed by using only a pointing device, except for textual data entry. Various programming concepts such as subroutine, iteration, recursion, concurrency, exception, and so forth are represented by two-dimensional graphic patterns and icons. The language is used to test the …

Extrema Of The Magnitude And The Phase Of A Complex Function Of A Real Variable: Application To Attenuated Internal Reflection, R. M.A. Azzam Aug 1988

Extrema Of The Magnitude And The Phase Of A Complex Function Of A Real Variable: Application To Attenuated Internal Reflection, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Given a complex function F(ω) = |F(ω)|exp[jΔ(ω)] of a real argument ω, the extrema of its magnitude |F(ω)| and its phase Δ(ω), as functions of ω, are determined simultaneously by finding the roots of one common equation, Im[G(ω)] = 0, where G= (F′/F)2 and F′ = ∂F/∂ω. The extrema of |F| and Δ are associated with Re G < 0 and Re G > 0, respectively. This easy-to-prove theorem has a wide range of applications in physical optics. We consider attenuated internal reflection (AIR) as …

A Graph Browser With Zoom And Roam For Allegro Common Lisp, Steve B. Cousins, J. Andrew Fingerhut Aug 1988

A Graph Browser With Zoom And Roam For Allegro Common Lisp, Steve B. Cousins, J. Andrew Fingerhut

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This report describes an object-oriented tool that has been developed for viewing graphs on a Macintosh II computer using Allegro Common Lisp. The tool is useful for visualizing data which can be represented in tree or graph form. The graphs can be viewed for far away to get a global view, and from close up so that the labels on the vertices can be discerned. Scrolling can be performed at a nearly infinite number of resolutions, and a search feature makes it easy to find any node rapidly. Although the 'information space' on which the graph is logically plotted is …

A Parallel Distributed Approach To Parsing Natural Language Deterministically, Stan C. Kwasny Aug 1988

A Parallel Distributed Approach To Parsing Natural Language Deterministically, Stan C. Kwasny

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The Determinism Hypothesis (Marcus, 1980) has given rise to much debate. The hypothesis makes explicit the idea that Natural Language interpretation need not depend in any fundamental way on the use of pseudo-parallelism or backtracking. We are exploring the consequences of this hypothesis in attempting to develop approaches to parsing which integrates current work in parallel distributed adaptive networks. We follow the basic approach of "Wait-and-See" parsing (WASP) which has shown the Natural Language interpretation of all but some varieties of "garden-path" sentences can be deterministically performed using a stack, a buffer for sentence constituents, and partitioned packets of rules. …

The Effects Of Low Doses (1 To 500 Kilograys) Of 100-Kev Electrons On Four Polymers, Cynthia Anne Bradbury Aug 1988

The Effects Of Low Doses (1 To 500 Kilograys) Of 100-Kev Electrons On Four Polymers, Cynthia Anne Bradbury

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Commercial films of polyetherimide (PEI), polyetheretherimide (PEEI), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polycarbonate (PC) were exposed in vacuum to l 00-keV electron radiation to total absorbed doses of l, l 0, l 00, 300, and 500 kilograys. The concentration of radiation-generated radicals, as measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), increased by over an order of magnitude in all four polymers. Correspondingly, the intensity of the infrared absorption peaks increased uniformly for all doses. Solubility tests resulted in decreased solubility in all polymers. IR, EPR, and solubility suggest dehydrogenation of the aliphatic C-H and phenyl C-H sites. The data indicated that cross …
