Estimating Particle Sizes, Concentrations, And Total Mass Of Ash In Volcanic Clouds Using Weather Radar, David M. Harris, William I. Rose
Estimating Particle Sizes, Concentrations, And Total Mass Of Ash In Volcanic Clouds Using Weather Radar, David M. Harris, William I. Rose
Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications
Observations of the March 19, 1982 ash eruption of Mount St. Helens, made by the National Weather Service (NWS, Portland, Oregon) on 5-cm radar, were used to estimate the volume of the ash cloud (2000 ±500 km3), the concentration of ash (0.2–0.6 g m−3). and the total mass of ash erupted (3–10×1011 g). The position of the cloud was also tracked by radar. Particle sizes in the ash cloud were estimated from settling velocities suggested by decreases in maximum ash cloud height with time as it moved away from the volcano. The March 19, 1982 …

Pseudo-Brewster And Second-Brewster Angles Of An Absorbing Substrate Coated By A Transparent Thin Film, R. M.A. Azzam, T F. Thonn
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The pseudo-Brewster angle of minimum reflectance for the p polarization, the corresponding angle for thes polarization, and the second-Brewster angle of minimum ratio of the p and s reflectances are all determined as functions of the thickness of a transparent film coating an absorbing substrate by numerical solution of the exact equations that govern such angles of the form Re(Z′/Z) = 0, where Z = Rp, Rs, or ρ represent the complex amplitude-reflection coefficients for the p and s polarizations and their ratio (ρ =Rp/Rs), …

Abstract Database System (ADS) is a data model developed for an enduring medical information system where frequent changes in the conceptual schema are anticipated and multi-level abstraction is required. The mechanism of abstraction in ADS is based on the abstraction operator of the lamba calculus. The formal semantics of a subset of the ADS model is presented using the denotational specification method.
Stochastic Estimation Applied To The Land Speed Of Sound Record Attempt By A Rocket Car, David A. Reinholz
Stochastic Estimation Applied To The Land Speed Of Sound Record Attempt By A Rocket Car, David A. Reinholz
Theses and Dissertations
Optimal linear smoothing theory is applied to the data from the Speed of Sound record attempt of a three-wheeled rocket car on 17 December 1979. A forward-backward estimation method is used which employs a seven state forward-running extended Kalman filter and a Meditch-form backward recursive 'fixed-interval' smoothing algorithm. Data for this analysis is supplied by a longitudinal accelerometer mounted on the vehicle and tracking radar measurements of range, azimuth, and elevation. States of interest include two components of vehicle position and velocity, accelerometer time-correlated error, and radar range and azimuth bias errors. Two iterations of the forward-backward smoothing algorithm provide …

Robotic Realities: Near Term Prospects And Problems, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller
Robotic Realities: Near Term Prospects And Problems, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Industrial robots are automation, but with a difference. Other machine tools are extensions of human capabilities, while robots are seen mainly as substitutes for human workers. Robots will find most of their industrial applications during the next decade or two in the metal-working sectors, where they will begin to displace semiskilled machine operatives in medium to large batch production operations. They cannot substitute for skilled machinists or other workers doing nonroutine jobs, or specialized, dedicated hard automation used in mass production. The current generation of robots, lacking sensory data processing and interpretation capabilities, can potentially replace up to 1.3 million …
Explicit Equations For The Second Brewster Angle Of An Interface Between A Transparent And An Absorbing Medium, R. M.A. Azzam
Explicit Equations For The Second Brewster Angle Of An Interface Between A Transparent And An Absorbing Medium, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The second Brewster angle ΦB2, at which the ratio Rp/Rs of intensity reflectances Rp and Rs for the parallel (p) and the perpendicular (s) polarizations of a dielectric-conductor interface reaches a minimum, is determined by Im[(u - ∊)(u - ∊)2/(u - 2∊)2] = 0, where ∊ is the complex ratio of dielectric constants of the media of refraction and incidence, ∊ = ∊/(∊ + 1), and u= sin2ΦB2. An equivalent quartic equation in u …

Self‐Refraction Of Nonlinear Capillary‐Gravity Waves, Partha P. Banerjee, Adrianus Korpel, Karl E. Lonngren
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Self‐refraction effects have been observed during the propagation of deep‐water capillary‐gravity waves. The observations are shown to be in qualitative agreement with the theory of self‐focusing and defocusing in a cubically nonlinear medium in the presence of diffraction.

Simple And Direct Determination Of Complex Refractive Index And Thickness Of Unsupported Or Embedded Thin Films By Combined Reflection And Transmission Ellipsometry At 45° Angle Of Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Measurements of the polarization states (represented by complex numbers Xr and Xt, respectively) of light reflected and transmitted by an unsupported or embedded thin film, for totally polarized light (with nonzero p and s components) incident at 45°, permit simple, direct, and explicit determination of the film's complex refractive index N1 independently of film thickness or input polarization. If α = Xr/Xt, we find that α = rs + rs-1, where rs is Fresnel’s complex reflection coefficient of the ambient-film interface for the s polarization at …
Maximum Minimum Reflectance Of Parallel-Polarized Light At Interfaces Between Transparent And Absorbing Media, R. M.A. Azzam
Maximum Minimum Reflectance Of Parallel-Polarized Light At Interfaces Between Transparent And Absorbing Media, R. M.A. Azzam
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The pseudo-Brewster angle ØpB, of minimum reflectance Rpm for the parallel (p) polarization, of an interface between a transparent and an absorbing medium is determined by Im{(∊ - u)[1 - (1 + ∊-1)u]2} = 0, where ∊ is the complex ratio of dielectric constants of the media and u = sin2øpB. It is shown that, for a given value of the normal-incidence amplitude reflectance |r|, there is an associated normal-incidence phase shift, δ = δmm, that leads to maximum minimum parallel reflectance, …

Hydraulic Model Study Of Hyrum Dam Auxiliary Labyrinth Spillway, Kathleen L. Houston, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation, Division Of Research, Hydraulics Branch
Hydraulic Model Study Of Hyrum Dam Auxiliary Labyrinth Spillway, Kathleen L. Houston, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation, Division Of Research, Hydraulics Branch
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The updated IDF (inflow design flood) for Hyrum Reservoir could not be passed with the existing hydraulic structures. The labyrinth was the most economical alternative for an auxiliary spillway. The labyrinth spillway, a series of trapezoidal shapes in plan form, would provide the necessary spillway length and capacity within a comparatively small width. The spillway configuration was based on design curves developed in the Bureau of Reclamation Hydraulic Laboratory.
The 1:30 scale model included the upstream approach channel, the labyrinth spillway, and a transition section leading to a long sloping chute. The model confirmed the maximum discharge of the spillway …

Hydraulic Analysis Of Surcharged Storm Sewer Systems, Don J. Wood, Gregory C. Heitzman
Hydraulic Analysis Of Surcharged Storm Sewer Systems, Don J. Wood, Gregory C. Heitzman
KWRRI Research Reports
Surcharge in a storm sewer system is the condition in which an entire sewer section is submerged and the pipe is flowing full under pressure. Flow in a surcharged storm sewer is essentially slowly varying unsteady pipe flow and methods for analyzing this type of flow are investigated. In this report the governing equations for unsteady fluid flow in pressurized storm sewers are presented. From these governing equations three numerical models are developed using various assumptions and simplifications. These flow models are applied to several example storm sewer systems under surcharge conditions. Plots of hydraulic grade and flow throughout the …

Single-Reflection Film—Substrate Half-Wave Retarders With Nearly Stationary Reflection Properties Over A Wide Range Of Incidence Angles, R. M.A. Azzam, M. Emdadur Rahman Khan
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The complex reflection coefficient for the p polarization of a transparent film on an absorbing or transparent substrate can be made equal to the negative of that for the s polarization, and hence the film—substrate system acts as a half-wave retarder (HWR), by proper selection of film refractive index N1, film thickness d, and angle of incidence Φ. This condition, which generally holds only at normal incidence, becomes possible at oblique incidence also if N1 is within a certain range, 1 < N1 < N̂1 . For a given substrate and given N1, …

Complex Reflection Coefficients For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations Of A Film-Substrate System, R. M.A. Azzam, M. Emdadur Rahman Khan
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
The complex reflection coefficients Rv(ø,ζ) of a film-substrate system for the parallel (v = p) and perpendicular (v = s) polarizations are examined in detail as functions of the angle of incidence ø(0 ≤ ø ≤ 90°) and the reduced normalized film thickness ζ(0 ≤ ζ < 1). For definiteness, the reflection of light of wavelength λ = 0.6328 µm by the air–SiO2–Si system is assumed. Families of circles that represent the constant-angle-of-incidence contours, their envelopes, and the associated constant-thickness contours ofRp and Rs are all presented in the complex plane. Furthermore, the amplitude-reflectance and phase-shift functions, |Rv|(ø,ζ) and argRv(ø,ζ) …
