Pressure Induced Magneto-Structural Phase Transitions In Layered Rmn2x2 Compounds (Invited), Shane Kennedy, Jianli Wang, Stewart Campbell, Michael Hofmann, S X. Dou

We have studied a range of pseudo-ternaries derived from the parent compound PrMn2 Ge 2, substituting for each constituent element with a smaller one to contract the lattice. This enables us to observe the magneto-elastic transitions that occur as the Mn-Mn nearest neighbour distance is reduced and to assess the role of Pr on the magnetism. Here, we report on the PrMn2 Ge 2−xSix, Pr1−xYxMn2 Ge 2, and PrMn2−xFex Ge 2 systems. The pressure produced by chemical substitution in these pseudo-ternaries is inherently non-uniform, with local pressure variations dependent on the local atomic distribution. We find that concentrated chemical substitution …

High conductivity poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was synthesised using vacuum vapour phase polymerization (VVPP). The process produces PEDOT composites which incorporate glycol within the polymer. To assess biocompatibility, a suite of analytical techniques were utilised in an effort to characterise the level of glycol present and its impact on cell attachment and proliferation. A small decrease in fibroblast cell attachment and proliferation was observed with increasing glycol content within the PEDOT composite. Keratinocyte cell attachment and proliferation by comparison showed an increase. As such, the results herein indicate that cell attachment and proliferation depends on the individual cell lines used and …

A giant magnetocaloric effect has been observed around the Curie temperature, TC ∼ 42 K, in NdMn1.7Cr0.3Si2 with no discernible thermal and magnetic hysteresis losses. Below 400 K, three magnetic phase transitions take place around 380 K, 320 K and 42 K. Detailed high resolution synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction (10-400 K) confirmed the magnetic transitions and phases as follows: TN intra ∼ 380 K denotes the transition from paramagnetism to intralayer antiferromagnetism (AFl), TN inter ∼ 320 K represents the transition from the AFl structure to the canted antiferromagnetic spin structure (AFmc), while TC ∼ 42 K denotes the …

Aging Effect Evolution During Ferroelectric-Ferroelectric Phase Transition: A Mechanism Study, Zuyong Feng, Zhenxiang Cheng, Dongqi Shi, S X. Dou

Aging can significantly modify the dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric performance of ferroelectrics. However, little attention has been paid to the aging effect during ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions that is essentially correlated with real applications. In this letter, the authors report the aging effect evolution between two ferroelectric phases in an acceptor-doped piezoceramics. The results show that aging-induced double hysteresis loops were exhibited in different ferroelectric phases, but disappeared during ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transitions, suggesting the mechanism that the intrinsic restoring force for the reversible switching of domains caused by the alignment of defect dipoles was weakened due to ferroelectric dipole reorientation.

The magnetic superconductor Ru0.9Sr2YCu2.1O7.9 (Ru-1212Y) has been investigated using neutron diffraction under variable temperature and magnetic field. With the complementary information from magnetization measurements, we propose a magnetic phase diagram T-H for the Ru-1212 system. Uniaxial antiferromagnetic (AFM) order of 1.2μ B/Ru atoms with moments parallel to the c-axis is found below the magnetic transition temperature at ~140 K in the absence of magnetic field. In addition, ferromagnetism (FM) in the ab-plane develops below ~120 K, but is suppressed at lower temperature by superconducting correlations. Externally applied magnetic fields cause Ru-moments to realign from the c-axis to the ab-plane, i.e. …

We have carried out a detailed investigation of the magnetic phase transition in MnFeP0.5As0.4Si0.1. Temperature hysteresis has been observed in the variable temperature magnetization curves (Bappl = 0.01 T) with TC W ~ 302 K on warming and TC C ~ 292 K on cooling. The first order nature of this transition in MnFeP0.5As0.4Si0.1 is confirmed by the negative slope obtained from isotherms of M2 versus B/M around the critical temperature. Linear thermal expansion measurements reveal a large volume change, ΔV/V∼8.7×10-3, at the magnetic phase transition and that this magnetovolume effect is suppressed to ΔV/V ∼ 5.5×10-3 in an applied …

Our neutron diffraction investigation of PrMn2Ge2−xSix reveals a clear separation into two magnetic phases, canted ferromagnetic (Fmc) and antiferromagnetic (AFmc), between x = 1.0 and 1.2 and a commensurate phase gap in the lattice, due to magnetostrictive distortion. This remarkable magnetoelastic phenomenon is driven by a nonuniform atomic distribution on the X site which in turn produces subtle variations in the local lattice and abrupt changes in the Mn-Mn magnetic exchange interaction. Our results show that coexistence of Fmc and AFmc phases depends on lattice parameter, chemical pressure from the rare-earth and metalloid sites, and local lattice strain distributions. We …

Band Structures, Magnetic Properties, And Enhanced Magnetoresistance In The High Pressure Phase Of Gd And Y Doped Two-Dimensional Perovskite Sr2coo4 Compounds, Xiaolin Wang, E Takayama-Muromachi, S X. Dou, Zhenxiang Cheng

The authors present their studies on the band structures and on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the high pressure phase of Sr2-xRExCoO4 [rare earth (RE)=Gd and Y, x=0.1-0.5] compounds which were synthesized by a high pressure and high temperature technique. The authors found that as x increases, the magnetoresistance {(PH-P0)/p0} increases up to -17% at 5 K and 7 T, which is 2.5 times higher than that for undoped Sr2CoO4, although the ferromagnetic transition drops from 255 to 200 K for the Gd doping with x=0.3. The saturation moments at low temperature are significantly enhanced for the Gd doped …

Synthesis and characterization of bulk NaxCoO2 samples substituted by K and Rb is reported. Phase formation studies revealed a narrow stable region for Na-alkali metal-Co system. Whisker and platelike single crystalline structures have been found to form on the surface of the pellets in case of K doping. All samples were metallic and no characteristic anomaly in R-T curves was observed for Rb doped sample. Magnetoresistance measured has a pronounced positive response only for K-doped and pure NaxCoO2 phases, reaching 11% and 7% at 5 K temperature, respectively.

Vapor Phase Polymerization Of Edot From Submicrometer Scale Oxidant Patterned By Dip-Pen Nanolithography, Cathal D. O'Connell, Michael J. Higgins, Hiroshi Nakashima, Simon E. Moulton, Gordon G. Wallace

Some of the most exciting recent advances in conducting polymer synthesis have centered around the method of vapor phase polymerization (VPP) of thin films. However, it is not known whether the VPP process can proceed using significantly reduced volumes of oxidant and therefore be implemented as part of nanolithography approach. Here, we present a strategy for submicrometer scale patterning of the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) via in situ VPP. Attolitre (10-18 L) volumes of oxidant "ink" are controllably deposited using dip-pen nanolithography (DPN). DPN patterning of the oxidant ink is facilitated by the incorporation of an amphiphilic block copolymer thickener, …
