New results for the exclusive and quasifree cross sections off neutrons bound in deuterium 𝛾vn(p) → pπ− (p) are presented over a wide final state hadron angle range with a kinematic coverage of the invariant mass (W) up to 1.825 GeV and the four-momentum transfer squared (Q2) from 0.4 to 1.0 GeV2. The exclusive structure functions were extracted and their Legendre moments were obtained. Final-state-interaction contributions have been kinematically separated from the extracted quasifree cross sections off bound neutrons solely based on the analysis of the experimental data. These new results will serve as …

We present new precision measurements of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section for momentum transfer (Q2) up to 15.75  (GeV/c)2. Combined with existing data, these provide an improved extraction of the proton magnetic form factor at high Q2 and double the range over which a longitudinal or transverse separation of the cross section can be performed. The difference between our results and polarization data agrees with that observed at lower Q2 and attributed to hard two-photon exchange (TPE) effects, extending to 8 (GeV/c)2 the range of Q2 for which a discrepancy …

Background: Energetic quarks in nuclear deep-inelastic scattering propagate through the nuclear medium. Processes that are believed to occur inside nuclei include quark energy loss through medium-stimulated gluon bremsstrahlung and intranuclear interactions of forming hadrons. More data are required to gain a more complete understanding of these effects.

Purpose: To test the theoretical models of parton transport and hadron formation, we compared their predictions for the nuclear and kinematic dependence of pion production in nuclei.

Methods: We have measured charged-pion production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off D, C, Fe, and Pb using the CLAS detector and the CEBAF 5.014-GeV electron beam. …

Collinear Factorization At Subasymptotic Kinematics And Validation In A Diquark Spectator Model, Juan V. Guerrero, Alberto Accardi Jan 2022

Collinear Factorization At Subasymptotic Kinematics And Validation In A Diquark Spectator Model, Juan V. Guerrero, Alberto Accardi

Physics Faculty Publications

We revisit the derivation of collinear factorization for Deep Inelastic Scattering at subasymptotic values of the four-momentum transfer squared, where the masses of the particles participating in the interaction cannot be neglected. By using an inclusive jet function to describe the scattered quark final state, we can restrict the needed parton kinematic approximations just to the four-momentum conservation of the hard scattering process, and explicitly expand the rest of the diagram in powers of the unobserved parton transverse momenta rather than neglecting those. This procedure provides one with more flexibility in fixing the virtuality of the scattered and recoiling partons …

On-Shell Representations Of Two-Body Transition Amplitudes: Single External Current, Raúl A. Briceño, Andrew W. Jackura, Felipe G. Ortega-Gama, Keegan H. Sherman Jan 2021

On-Shell Representations Of Two-Body Transition Amplitudes: Single External Current, Raúl A. Briceño, Andrew W. Jackura, Felipe G. Ortega-Gama, Keegan H. Sherman

Physics Faculty Publications

This work explores scattering amplitudes that couple two-particle systems via a single external current insertion, 2 + J → 2. Such amplitudes can provide structural information about the excited QCD spectrum. We derive an exact analytic representation for these reactions. From these amplitudes, we show how to rigorously define resonance and bound-state form factors. Furthermore, we explore the consequences of the narrow-width limit of the amplitudes as well as the role of the Ward-Takahashi identity for conserved vector currents. These results hold for any number of two-body channels with no intrinsic spin, and a current with arbitrary Lorentz structure and …

Solving Relativistic Three-Body Integral Equations In The Presence Of Bound States, Andrew W. Jackura, Raúl A. Briceño, Sebastian M. Dawid, Md. Habib E. Islam, Connor Mccarty Jan 2021

Solving Relativistic Three-Body Integral Equations In The Presence Of Bound States, Andrew W. Jackura, Raúl A. Briceño, Sebastian M. Dawid, Md. Habib E. Islam, Connor Mccarty

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a simple scheme for solving relativistic integral equations for the partial-wave projected three-body amplitudes. Our techniques are used to solve a problem of three scalar particles with a formation of a S-wave two-body bound state. We rewrite the problem in a form suitable for numerical solution and then explore three solving strategies. In particular, we discuss different ways of incorporating the bound-state pole contribution in the integral equations. All of them lead to agreement with previous results obtained using finite-volume spectra of the same theory, providing further evidence of the validity of the existing finite- and infinite-volume formalism …

Simultaneous Monte Carlo Analysis Of Parton Densities And Fragmentation Functions, Eric Moffat, W. Melnitchouk, Ted C. Rogers, N. Sato, Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration Jan 2021

Simultaneous Monte Carlo Analysis Of Parton Densities And Fragmentation Functions, Eric Moffat, W. Melnitchouk, Ted C. Rogers, N. Sato, Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

We perform a comprehensive new Monte Carlo analysis of high-energy lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron scattering data to simultaneously determine parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton and parton to hadron fragmentation functions (FFs). The analysis includes all available semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and single-inclusive e+e annihilation data for pions, kaons and unidentified charged hadrons, which allows the flavor dependence of the fragmentation functions to be constrained. Employing a new multistep fitting strategy and more flexible parametrizations for both PDFs and FFs, we assess the impact of different datasets on sea quark densities and confirm the previously observed suppression …

Large Transverse Momentum In Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering Beyond Lowest Order, B. Wang, J. O. Gonzalez-Hernandez, T. C. Rogers, N. Sato Jan 2019

Large Transverse Momentum In Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering Beyond Lowest Order, B. Wang, J. O. Gonzalez-Hernandez, T. C. Rogers, N. Sato

Physics Faculty Publications

Motivated by recently observed tension between O(α2s) calculations of very large transverse momentum dependence in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan scattering, we repeat the details of the calculation through an O(α2s) transversely differential cross section. The results confirm earlier calculations, and provide further support to the observation that tension exists with current parton distribution and fragmentation functions.

We measured the g1 spin structure function of the deuteron at low Q2, where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory (χPT). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of W ≈ 1.9  GeV. The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment Γd1 and the spin polarizability γd0 are precisely determined down to a minimum Q2 of 0.02  GeV2 for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We compare them to several χPT calculations and models. These results are the first in a …
