This report was prepared by the Federal Water- Quality Administration, Pacific Southwest Region, now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region IX, at the request of the State of Nevada, Department of Health, Welfare, and rehabilitation. In a letter, dated December 5, 1969, this agency asked for technical assistance, as authorized by the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, in developing discharge standards appropriate for Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, and the Lower Colorado River. This report includes work that is an extension of Project No. B-005-KY as reported in Research Report No. 43 of the University of Kentucky Water Resources Institute. That project was initiated in April 1968 as Project No. A-019-KY with principal emphasis on physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the main stem of the Salt River upstream from the proposed damsite for Taylorsville Lake, an impoundment of about 3, 600 acres at seasonal pool. The report includes descriptions of an additional 13 stations along the stream, bringing to 38 the number of permanent collecting sites.

This report covers work that is an extension of Project No. A-019-KY. A series of 25 sampling stations was established in the mainstream and tributaries of the Salt River that extend from the source of the stream in Boyle County to a few miles below the site of Taylorsville Darn in Spencer County. Sampling for water chemistry and biota was carried out semimonthly. A Revision Of The Feather Mite Genus Brephosceles (Proctophyllodidae: Alloptinae), Paul C. Peterson

A systematic revision is presented for the genus Brephosceles. Data on external morphology, zoogeography, and host-parasite relationships are included. Thirteen named and thirty new species are recognized and described. Spawning And Early Life History Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) In Wahweap Bay, Lake Powell, Kent D. Miller

Spawning time and habitat of largemouth bass, survival of embryos, and growth and food habits of fingerlings were studied in 1968 and 1969 at Wahweap Bay, Lake Powell. Spawning began in mid- to late-April, when mean daily water temperature at nesting depths was 14.4-15.0 Centigrade (58-59 Fahreheit), and continued until mid-June. Most spawning took place on the northeast shore of the bay. Sandstone rubble was the most commonly used bottom type for nesting, either at the base of ledges or around large sandstone boulders. Mean nest depth increased from 1.63 meter to 4.54 meters (5.36 feet to 14.90 feet) in …

The generic rev1s1on of the Pterodectinae, new subfamily of the Proctophyllodidae, is based on 88 named and over 160 new species. Included are morphology, host-parasite relationships, diagnoses of four named and eight new genera, and illustrations of each type species. The named genera are:

Anisodiscus Gaud and Mouchet, 1957; Montesauria Oudemans, 1905; Proterothrix Gaud, 1968; Pterodectes Robin, 1877. Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system.

This study developed from observations made during an earlier study on Lake Mead which was reported in CHE-70, Water Quality Study of Lake Mead. Results from that study indicated that poor-quality water was flowing into the Las Vegas Bay reach of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead. Also reports of deteriorating water quality, resulting in taste and odors in domestic water supplies taken from Boulder Basin as well as a reduction in the attractiveness of Las Vegas Bay for recreational uses caused by aquatic plants and algae blooms, indicated a need for a concentrated study concerning the effects of flows from Las …

Hydroids And Hydromedusae Of Southern Chesapeake Bay, Dale Calder

A survey was made in southern Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from April 1965 through March 1968 to determine the species of hydrozoans present, their seasonality and reproductive periodicities. This report discusses 43 hydroid and 27 medusa species known from the study area, of which 23 hydroids and 11 medusae have not previously been found in Chesapeake Bay. Clytia paulensis and the hydroid of Moerisia lyonsi have not been reported before in North American waters, and the hydroid of Amphinema dinema is recorded for the first time from the western Atlantic. The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems came the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Gammaridea (Crustacea : Amphipoda) Of The Lower Chesapeake Estuaries, James Feely, Marvin L. Wass

Gammarid amphipods of three tidal rivers entering Chesapeake Bay were studied for ten months, particularly in the York River where 40 species were record during the period. Several species moved up or down the rivers with changing salinity. The more abundant species had longer breeding seasons. The number of described species from lower Chesapeake Bay is now 42 and the presence of 10 undescribed species and of several which bracket the region indicates that much remains to be learned about amphipods in the Bay. Between June, 1970 and July, 1971 a two square mile area in East Central Illinois served as a study area for the effects of the oil industry on farm land. Observations were made on several farms concerning the activity of oil companies and interviews with farmers were held. Two areas of farmland were given special attention. One was a clover field where salt water had flooded a portion of the field. The other area was a corn field where oil had flooded approximately eight acres of land.
