Tectonics And Sedimentary Facies Interpretation Of The Mesozoic Giron Group, Colombia, Hernando Martinez-Sacristan, Ricardo Mier-Umana, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Stanley Schleifer, Diana Lucia Leon-Martinez

Publications and Research

Preliminary field investigations involving exposed Giron Group sediments in Colombia provided some interesting geologic information in terms of provenance, depositional environments, and development of the Mesozoic synrift sedimentary basins in Colombia. Overall, the synrift Triassic-Jurassic rift-related volcanic rocks, redbeds, and evaporites are prominent in Colombia, and a thick basin sequence of Cretaceous sandstones and shales dominates the central part of the Cordillera Oriental. These were mostly deposited in dominantly north-trending grabens. Identified sedimentary rock types were arkose, clast-and-matrix-supported conglomerate, red mudstone, variegated sandstone, siltstone and breccia. Extensive kaolinitization was noticeable in several sandstone samples. Among the notable sedimentary structures were …

Investigating The Utility Of Detrital Mineral Microchemistry And Radiogenic Isotope Compositions As Provenance Discriminators, Jack Hietpas Aug 2012

Investigating The Utility Of Detrital Mineral Microchemistry And Radiogenic Isotope Compositions As Provenance Discriminators, Jack Hietpas

Earth & Environmental Sciences - Dissertations

The provenance of clastic sediments remains one of the key tools for understanding the complex dynamic history of the Earth. Detritus shed from ancient orogens may be the only evidence available for determining the timing, evolution, paleogeography, and existence of tectonic events active over the 4.56 Ga of Earth history. The focus of this dissertation research is to assess the strengths and limitations of existing, as well as novel, tools for determining the provenance of siliciclastic sediments.

The utility of detrital monazite crystallization ages was investigated as a provenance indicator in both modern and ancient sedimentary systems. The results from …

An Approach To Provenance, Tectonic And Redox Conditions Of Jurassic-Cretaceous Akkuyu Formation, Central Taurids, Turkey, Ali Sari, Derya Koca Jan 2012

An Approach To Provenance, Tectonic And Redox Conditions Of Jurassic-Cretaceous Akkuyu Formation, Central Taurids, Turkey, Ali Sari, Derya Koca

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Akkuyu formation was deposited on marine carbonate platform in Central Tarurids. The organic material of the unit is composed of Type III kerogen which is woody material transported from the land. Late Jurassic- Early Cretaceous is an important period which great anoxic events in deep sea bottom occurred due to the primary organic productivity in global sea surface. Use of several trace elements values (Ni, V, U, Cr, Co, Th) revealed that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Akkuyu formation shows oxic, disoxic and anoxic paleoredox conditions. In this period the primary productivity was considerably high. Examination of specimen derived …

U-Pb Geochronology Of Detrital Zircon In Quartzites Of The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex, Sawtooth Range, Idaho, Usa, Philip Gerard Bergeron Jan 2012

U-Pb Geochronology Of Detrital Zircon In Quartzites Of The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex, Sawtooth Range, Idaho, Usa, Philip Gerard Bergeron

LSU Master's Theses

In southwest Laurentia, the Paleoproterozoic Selway terrane has been proposed to extend as basement from the Wyoming Province to the Proterozoic rifted margin of Laurentia primarily based on limited exposures. The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex (SMC), Idaho, a series of high-grade metasupracrustal rocks lies within the proposed region of the Selway terrane and may represent remnants of this terrane. Alternatively, it may represent another basement terrane of cratonic North America. To test the hypothesis that the SMC belongs to the Selway terrane, detrital zircon U/Pb ages of five quartzite samples were analyzed by LA-ICP-MS to establish age, possible provenance, and age …
